Kimi walked slowly through the forest, heading towards the beach, walking with a limp from her injuries. Kimi was attacked badly recently, piled under pounds of tree branches as a green Kalona mare attacked her. She was very lucky to be alive right now; unfortunately, not everyone was able to be alright. Nasota, the two-legger that was near and dear to Kimi's heart was killed that day, burnt to death.
Kimi wasn't going to cry, no, she couldn't be sad right now. The incident was a week ago and she needed to take her mind off of it. She needed to forget about the past, just as Safi had told her. Concentrate on the future and the present, that is what is important. But no matter how hard Kimi thought of the future, she didn't know what to expect from it. What did Kimi want to do with her life? The only word that ever came up was family.

"Maturity is about acting with reason, not passion; behaving in such a way that you can be counted on by those less fortunate, or those that choose to look to you for defense. Maturity is also...hrm."
Hooves sinking in the soft sands of the beach, Safi was pacing up and down a short strech of coastline, obviously trying very hard to concentrate. The expression on his face was both focused and confused, and given the words he was speaking, it was hardly a chore to figure out why. Anyone that knew him would probably be a bit confused as to what he was saying, though, and with good reason; Safi and maturity definitly didn't usually go together!
Safi himself would have been the first to admit that fact, in fact, usually with a good laugh. So why was he spending a lovely day at the beach rambling about maturity?
Because it was obviously the only way to learn his lines, and it had been hard enough to get Elizabeth to teach him those lines ONCE. And how was he supposed to welcome and instruct his daughter if he didn't have a suitably motivational greeting prepared?
Up until a few days ago, he would have answered that question with a laugh and a shrug, then some appropriate comment about the inspiration of the moment. That had been before he'd been told that Saiena was due to hatch at any time and had had Elizabeth lecture him on the momentousness of the occassion...which had lead to this little exercise. And damned if he wasn't loathing every minute of it!
"Maturity is a state that all should aspire to, striving for with every fiber of our being as we age...and man, what a load of bullshit!"

Kimi heard the sound of a familiar and friendly voice coming from the beach. Kimi walked a bit faster to get a glimpse of who it was. She smiled in delight when she saw the stallion. Her good friend, Safi, was walking on the beach, rambling on and talking to himself about something. Kimi leapt over a bush and trotted over to the stallion happily.
"Safi!" she shouted with a wide grin, increasing her pace of walking with each step she took until she ran up to him. "How have you been? It has been quite some time, last I saw you, we were huddled up inside a cave on a snowy day, completely different from today! It's so good to see you!"

Surprises every which way you turned, these days! As evidenced by his last comment of disgust, Safi had just come to the conclusion that there were better uses for his time than trying to memorize concepts he wasn't sure he believed in anyway. Oh well, at least he'd tried!
And no sooner had he decided that than Kimi had shown up, clear validation of his own thoughts. Score one for the stallion, woot!
Turning in the direction the mare had called out from, Safi greeted her with a wide grin. "Kimi! If it isn't my favorite almost relative twice removed; it's great to see you again." Smiling, he pranced up and gave the mare a nuzzle, his pleasure at seeing her again completely undisguised. "Amazing how much a change in the weather can affect venue, isn't it? I'll take beaches over caves any day, or at least any nice day. And I've been well, how about yourself? Keeping warm? Not that you'd be able to see any frostbite anyway, with that blue..."

"I have been...well, not too great," said Kimi, feeling a bit akward. "Last week was a terrible week for me, to say the least. My mother and I were visiting one of her friends, a two-legger, when a firebreathing Kalona attacked us, killing the girl. She then attacked me, it was so painful..."
Kimi paused, she couldn't remember most of the event. She remembered the suffocation, the difficulty of breathing, the pain of the wood pressing against her lungs, but she couldn't remember what exactly had happened after that. How she managed to survive still seemed to be a mystery to her.
"But enough about me," said Kimi, trying to underplay the event. "How about you? My life has been otherwise quite dull besides the attack." Kimi gave an warm smile to Safi, to let him know that everything is now alright.

...Wow. Safi could only stand and stare as Kimi described the amazing trauma she'd gone through in the past week, unable to do more than that if he'd tried. How could words even begin to help in a situation like that?
Kimi's dismissal of the subject only went so far, though. Safi didn't believe for a moment that she was alright; given the fact that he'd spent the majority of his adult life providing a shoulder for mares to cry on, he considered himself as close to an expert on the subject of female emotions as was possible. And in this case...well, there was unfinished business here.
But for now, he'd move on; it was hardly a good greeting to start to psychoanalyze someone, after all! Even as he nodded in agreement, however, he was moving to give Kimi a reassuring hug with one wing. Words might not always be appropriate, but actions were much louder.
"You've had more excitement than me lately, but I've been busy. My daughter is due to emerge from her basket any time this week, so I've been on tenterhooks. The whole reason I'm out here right now is actually because my babysitter drove me away, if you can believe it." The grin that he gave Kimi was both sheepish and honest; Liz was very set in her ways sometimes! "So I was trying to rehearse the noble and inspiring speech Liz had suggested to me, but I think that noble and inspiring are a bit beyond me."

"DAUGHTER?!" exclaimed Kimi, shocked. "You have a daughter?! Why did you not tell me this before? Back when were in the cave, you never mentioned that you had a daughter! Oh, either way, congratulations Safi! I am so happy for you!"
Kimi gave a wide grin to Safi and nuzzled his cheek slightly. She wondered what the mother must be like, it was so odd the Safi had never mentioned a romantic involvement. In fact, she was actually a bit jealous of the mare, Safi was sweet, funny, handsome and everything a mare could want! It wasn't a suprise to Kimi that he is now taken, but she was more suprised he hadn't mentioned it sooner.

Safi couldn't help the short burst of laughter that Kimi's sudden enthusiasm wrought forth. Then again, it was always amusing to see the reactions of those that knew him to the fact that he had a kid to begin with, so this was hardly different. But he did so love to explain himself, because this story made such good telling.
Still chuckling, he raised a hoof in clarification. "I didn't explain last time because the last time we met, I didn't HAVE a daughter, so it would have been awfully hard to explain, wouldn't you say? I didn't find Sai until later; until I was on my way home, actually; so this whole parenthood thing is new to me."
His eyes were sparkling mischieviously as he spoke, since he'd failed to mention the most pertinant facts; namely, that Saiena was an ADOPTED daughter, not blood. But why ruin the surprise any earlier than necessary? "You seem surprised; does the idea of me being a parent shock you that much?"

"Oh, not that shocked," said Kimi with a delighted smile. "In fact, I am quite, well, relieved to be honest. When you said you had a child, I was worried that you were, well, involved in a relationshp. It got me a bit jealous almost. To be honest, Safi, I guess you can say I have a little crush on you. You know, a child's love? You're handsome, funny, sweet and charming..."
Kimi stopped herself. What was she saying? The truth! Kimi knew much better than to tell the truth, especially about something as secretive as this! Kimi's face turned bright red, she felt her face and cheeks grow hot. Oh, she had never been so embarassed by the truth before in all her life!

Once again, Safi found his reactions beyond his control. As soon as Kimi had started her little confession, he'd been looking at her curiously. But once she'd finished and realized what she had said, he simply burst out laughing.
And why shouldn't he? To his knowledge, it was accepted practice that the stallion state his intentions and make declarations to the mare, not the other way 'round; yet here he was being told that he was a potentially desirable mate by a second mare! Truly an amusing state of affairs, if a bit chagrinning for a stallion such as himself.
But he wasn't going to let a golden opportunity go to waste. Still chuckling, he gave Kimi a squeeze with the wing that still lay draped over her back. "I swear, if I was the type who had an ego you just would have inflated it tenfold, Kimi; it touches my heart to know that I can inspire tender feelings, even if it's just a crush. But I doubt you'd stay interested in me for long, given my more usual characteristics."
Such as the fact that his interest was attracted by muscles and testosterone, distinct stumbling blocks to any meaningful amorous relationship with a mare. But he wasn't going to go into that now! Smiling, he gave her an understanding nod. "But as things stand, I'm unattached. Got the kid in a backwards fashion, but given the choice of adopting her or leaving her alone in the woods...I'm sure you can understand why I did what I did." And indeed, he hadn't once regreted his choice, looking forward to his daughter's harching with great eagerness as he was.
But that reminded him. "So, on the subject of compliments; have you been doing much stick shaking at your droves of admirers, Kimi? Or have you firmly hung up a 'reserved' sign to deter them?" The look he gave her was teasing, remeniscent of their last talk about the pursuit of romance and intended to put her at ease. No more embarrassment if he could help it!

If Kimi wasn't embarassed before, she was surely embarassed now. She opened to Safi, just to get rejected. Oh, not really rejected where it hurt her feelings and he was harsh; certainly not. Instead, it seemed to come of Safi as more of a joke, more playful. Kimi wasn't too surprised nor offended, but just very embarassed. She then went on to answer his question.
"I'm single and looking," said Kimi. "I think. I'm really not sure, there is still that one stallion I've been 'seeing', but I don't know where things are going with him, so I don't really feel to tied down as of yet. In a word, yes, I'm still looking, seeing if there is another stallion to sweep me off my feet, so to speak. It's been a rough week, really got me thinking about my life, you know?"
"After seeing Nashota die so suddenly, so brutally, it really just, made me think. I could have been her. I could have been the one dead, not Nashota. It made me realize how short life can really be, how you can be alive and well one day and dead the next. I have to live each day to the fullest, get everything I want done in life as soon as I can," said Kimi, rambling on without really thinking about it. She felt comfortable with Safi, she felt she could confide in him her deepest thoughts. Clearly, she has done so, she even admitted she had a crush on him!

Safi nodded his head, understanding what Kimi was saying as well as anyone that hadn't experienced the same trauma possibly could. After all, it didn't take trauma to force introspection, a fact that he was all too familiar with after the excitement of the last few months. But Kimi's angle made sense as well, albeit in a much more unfortunate manner.
"Funny how being forced to consider points of view we hadn't considered before can make you turn introspective, isn't it? The important thing is remembering that there's ALWAYS the chance of death and to act with that in mind without compromising our own ideals."
This was delivered with complete and utter sincerity, a rare occurance for Safi even when he was joking. The fact that he was COMPLETELY serious made it all the more surprising, even to Safi himself. Once he realized what he was saying, he actually cracked up. "Ok, being serious is not my game, obviously. But within the scope of what I AM capable of, I'm glad to know that you're ok, Kimi; and it's good that you've realized this. You're still young, after all, and there's plenty of time for you to worry about settling down. That said, casual sex is not always the answer."

"I'm still young?" said Kimi, hardly making it sound like a question. "Safi, I've always been young and will always be young. It's something I just can't avoid. It's my way of life, similar to you, Safi. I simply cannot imagine you as one to be elderly and bitter, no, you will always be young. Young at heart at least! And Safi, do feel you are very capable of being serious, it is one of the triats I admire about you, in fact; your wisdom. It's so honest, so true, so sincere. It really helped me think. Your words still stay to me today. To not let the past consume my life was one of the greatest lessons I've ever learned, and you are the one who taught it to me, Safi."

Damned if he wasn't blushing! She just sounded so sincere, he couldn't help but feel embarrassed. But it was the good sort of embarrassed; even as his cheeks flamed he was laughing.
"Kimi, Kimi, Kimi. You are both a wonder and a trial; I'm actually embarrassed to hear you talk! But it's nice to know I'm at least capable of wisdom; hopefully that'll stand me in good stead when Saiena's around." Aww, happy papa moment. But enough of those!
Squashing down the urge to continue on this subject, he gave Kimi a noogie instead. "So, fellow young-at-heartian, what brings you to the beach today?"

"At least I'm not the only one embarassed," said Kimi with a smile. "And to be honest, I just felt like I needed a walk. I have been home all week since the incident, getting a few visitors. Mainly my mother. Now, enough about me! I want to hear more about your daughter, Saiena, was it? How did you end up becoming a father exactly? Its such wonderful news!"
Kimi wondered what Safi's daughter could grow up to be like. Playful and silly, most likely, but Kimi also wondered if she would become as serious as Safi is at the same time.
