The sun shone down placidly that afternoon, an oddly warm, calm day for one that was within the winter months. The rays drifted down to warm the brightly colored sands, and along one long, rather flat western strip of beach, all seemed quiet, and serene. Not quite empty, though.

A single shadowy form trotted across the swirling red and creme colored sands, kicking up the stuff occasionally. Itzal had come upon the beaches, in his wandering, and was delighted by the new place, with it's colorful sand and the waves that washed up and down the shores. He liked to play a game in which he would run to and fro, playing tag with the water, almost. Anyone who'd watched might have found it quite silly, but the jet black aeri male was all alone, or so he thought.

He slowed a bit to paw gently at a passing crab, snorting at it softly as he bent down to snort at it, before looking up again, and gazing down the expanse of the beach. He was very curious over where it would lead, though he had his trepidations about staying about the shores in wintertime. If there was one thing he disliked, it was cold weather. No matter now, though, as he spread his multi-colored wings to catch more of the sun's rays, enjoying their warmth and continuing along his way.

Someone was flying overhead.

The dark figure far below only caught the mare's attention when it spread its wings - the bright colours snatched at her gaze and forced her to turn. Gliding closer, she let her eyes take him in: an Aeri, tall, strong, brightly marked with all the colours of the spectrum. He seemed to be...playing. Playing with the waves like a colt on his first trip to the shore.

"Well, well," she murmured to herself. "Aren't you a curious fellow?"

To own the truth, she found him mildly attractive. He probably wasn't the brightest star in the sky, but his childlike attitude to life would be a refreshing change from the soldiers she dealt with every day. And she was looking for information, after all - she could justify a short detour.

Swift decision made, Clytaemnestra banked sharply to the right and swooped towards the ground - an easy landing dropped her some ten yards away, but not before she had made sure he would see her smooth flight past him. Turning to look at him, she said simply, "Fine day for games, is it?"

The young male startled a bit, his ears catching the sound of beating wings before he saw the tri-colored mare dart past. He jumped a little before standing still to watch, the water rushing up to collide with his hooves and ankles, forgetting about the unusual creature he had come across.

Her appearance didn't do anything to help him get over being startled. He had never seen another Nequus like this one...he'd thought her another Aeri, at first, but that assumption was quickly put to rest. She looked vicious, in a way, and he eyed the multiple forked parts that made up her tail. He eased up a little when he heard her address him.

His eyes took on a sheepish, playful shine, realizing that she must have caught him fooling around near the water. It was his first time near the ocean, truthfully, and he'd always wanted to see it after hearing stories, both good and bad. He was an odd creature, in that he often liked to be up during both day and night. He enjoyed the feel of the way his dark body absorbed the warmth during the day, but being an Aeri, he would always have a deep appreciation for the darker hours as well.

"Yes, very!" he replied after hesitating shortly, his ears perked as he watched, seeming perhaps a little shy. He decided quickly that manners would probably be of use here...the mare didn't look like something he'd want to cross. "My name is Itzal. What is your name?" he inquired, drawing a bit closer.

What a peculiar stallion this Itzal was, Clytaemnestra thought to herself, amused. But how best to play before him? Intimidation would probably either fall flat or frighten him off, neither of which she desired, and the mysterious approach would probably just leave him, for want of better words, mystified. That left her with few options for getting any information out of him, being not of the sort who could easily lead a stallion on with flirtatious looks and movements. Not that she was an unattractive mare - she often found herself having at least a few refusals to make when the time came for such things - but she was not pretty by anyone's measure. Handsome, perhaps, when she did not lay her ears and glower, but not pretty like mares ought to be. There was a kind of beauty in her powerful frame, she supposed, rather than in her unremarkable face, in her flowing mane and ancient eyes rather than in her commonplace colours.

...She supposed she might try it. In her own way, of course, not with the silliness that seemed to surround others of her sex like a personal bank of fog, made to measure. "Call me...Nestra," she answered, offering him a pleasant look. "I wonder, Itzal, would it be awfully rude of me to ask - I am looking for some information regarding a certain other of my kind, with whose...care I have been charged. She has quite lost me, and has been eluding me for days. Might you, perhaps, have seen or heard anything of a Reya in the area of late? Dark, dark as you all over, but with amber eyes?"

And even if Itzal had no news of Melantho to offer, the lady thought to herself, she might remain a while. It had been a long day, and his company would likely be refreshing even if it was almost certain not to be restful.

She certainly was different, Itzal thought to himself. He did his best not to judge, though, on appearances, disliking when he himself was treated with hostility. Though they were about the same size there was something in the mare that was a little intimidating to the stallion, so he remained polite, and rather formal, not wishing to irk her with any coltish antics.

He bowed his head a little, his multi-colored wings fluttering lightly, giving a leathery rustle. "Good to meet you, Nestra." he commented, and tilted his head a bit at her inquiry. "Not rude at all, no," he said, and looked a bit thoughtful. "To tell the truth, miss, you're the first of your kind I've ever met personally. I'm sorry to say that I haven't met anyone matching your description." he said, his tone a bit doleful. He had heard quite a bit about the rarer breeds of Nequus, the Reya, and Ischa, and had always rather been curious about them. Interesting that he should get to meet one, now.

"If there is anything I can do to help, though, don't hesitate to ask." he offered generously. "It must be hard to have lost someone important...if that is the case?" he mused, having it in his mind that the Reya before him had lost someone close to her.

Clytaemnestra rolled her eyes with a wry expression. "Important to my job, that's for certain," she answered, mildly amused by the situation. She had always known that Melantho would grow to outrun her, but the black mare was proving far more elusive than anyone had expected. "Her father is my herd leader - I am his Commandante, his lieutenant if you like. The girl herself has always been...headstrong, wild, stubborn, contrary. You know the type, I'm sure. She's got it into her head that she should run off and make her own life, and as courageous as that sounds she's far too young to make it alone. Too weak. Too inexperienced. She's friendless out there - I dread to think of what some unscrupulous stallion may force upon her, or the marks some jealous mare may leave upon her." She sighed. "She is lovely to behold, Itzal, no matter what the folk of my lands may say about the dark-coated among us, and for as long as she walks unguarded it will be a curse to her."

Examining Itzal surreptitiously, she wondered if he had ever suffered any comments about the colour of his coat. Probably not. And even if he had, judging by his playful temperament they had not affected him adversely for long. For her part, Clytaemnestra had never bought into superstition: a Nequus gone bad was a Nequus gone bad, never mind what colour it was. The blood that spilled from its flesh at the point of a horn was the same as any other. All enemies were alike to her, and each tended to fall beneath her hooves as easily as the last.

She took a few steps towards the rippling wavelets, stooping to examine a small crab. The slight limp in one of her hind legs was noticeable now that she was making no effort to conceal it. "The only help I suppose you might be, sir," she said quietly, watching the crab burrow into the sand, "would be to keep your eyes open for her, and send word to me if you see her. I've many stallions under my command combing Eden for her; ask around a little and you'd be sure to find one. It would be a great help to me." At this last, she looked up with a kind expression - she had not entirely forgotten how to be gentle, though nowadays she seldom saw reason for it.

Itzal listened to her, blinking a little bit as the female rolled her eyes. "Oh my, I see....how very unfortunate." he said in reply to her story, picking his words rather carefully. The use of military words made him a bit edgy. He knew how strict some herds could be, and he had become a wanderer on part of that, aside from curiosity. He was certainly not one to enjoy fighting. He brushed the thoughts aside, and gained a look of concern at the rest of her explanation, nodding his black head gravely.

He knew what she meant...it was true, on a couple occasions during his travels he'd found that other Nequus did not favor such a dark pelt color. Luckily enough he'd never encountered anything more than the superstitious, and he'd always been quick to leave if they had displayed any great displeasure at his presence.

He blinked a bit as she moved, seeing the limp at once. "Of course, I shall watch out for her...she sounds like she wouldn't be too hard to discern, in the daylight, at least." he mused, his concerned expression deepening. "Are you alright, miss?" he asked after a moment, his ears drooped slightly.

Ah. He'd noticed the limp. The internal wince was impossible to suppress - Clytaemnestra did not, as a rule, enjoy exposing her weaknesses. She hardly thought of Itzal as a particular threat, but old habits (as they say) die hard. "Mm? Oh, yes, yes, I'm - I'm fine. Really. It's an old hurt, one that will probably never heal completely. I was lucky to survive at all, even in this damaged state."

It was the truth. She'd been young at the time, though she had not thought herself very young, and weak in comparison to the way she was now. Her mother's small herd had been all but wiped out by vicious invaders, and the mare herself had been brutally cut down by a mighty stallion. Catching him in the act of rejoicing over his slain enemy, Clytaemnestra had been filled with a terrible rage. She had thrown herself into a duel with him without really thinking about whether or not she would survive - survive she did, though barely, and she survived victorious. Her curved horn and powerful stature had tipped the balance in her favour: what might have been a lethal wound to someone more slight was reduced to merely a serious hurt, and the sharp bone of her horn was well suited to its task of gouging the stallion's throat out. Perhaps that dawn, soaked in the blood of her first victim, a stallion who should by all rights have slaughtered her in an instant, was when she had acquired her taste for battle.

"I got it from the brute who killed my mother," she said quietly, staring out to sea, "while repaying him for that in full."

He tried to conceal his concerned demeanor, not wanting to seem as if he were trying to belittle her or anything of the sort. "I see, how unfortunate. It's good that you did, anyway." he said, tossing his head a bit to clear some of the curly orange bangs away from his eyes, smiling a little.

He'd no idea of the carnage the female had been through, and he was a stranger to any large scale amount of violence himself. He could imagine the female before him as a fighter though, and the mere thought of it always made him nervous. He'd come from a peaceful place himself, and had not yet encountered violence on his many travels, through some slim chance. He blinked in surprise as she explained further, his ears laying back. "How dreadful." he said, looking rather nervous. "Well at least he got what was coming to him."

Silently, Clytaemnestra wondered at the gentle stallion. He was clearly unaccustomed to the thought of combat, poor soul - should she really be tying him up in all this? She hadn't stopped to think about it. He was just so...so vastly different from every idea of a stallion she had thus far held that it had never occurred to her to protect him. The males she was used to back in the herd were usually capable of protecting themselves, to a point, and they certainly never showed any innocent, whimsical tendencies. It was...oddly refreshing, being around Itzal.

"I try to see that everyone gets what's coming to them," she said distantly, still gazing at the horizon. "It isn't easy. In fact, I...probably shouldn't be involving you in this fiasco in the first place. Things could easily become dangerous: she's only an impetuous little filly, really, but when even children have deadly weapons on their foreheads one can't be too careful. I'd hate to see an innocent hurt."

And by that she meant him, of course, not that it would be like her to admit it directly. Those old habits were back with a vengeance. Couldn't show any weakness, any sign of life, or they'd rip it out of you before you could blink.

As much as she enjoyed the heat of combat, the Commandante was beginning to realise that she sometimes - just sometimes - missed being Nestra.

It was true, sadly enough. Though the stallion was quite strong and healthy, he'd never been taught in any sort of combat, and that peace was the way to go. And of course, if you couldn't fight, you had to take flight. It was perhaps considered a cowardly thing by many, but because the young stallion had drifted away from any semblance of a family he had ever known, he had no one to be responsible for, save himself. Itzal really saw no shame in running, himself...it was simply the law of self-preservation going to work. He'd been lucky thus far however, and had run into no true problems, which he was suddenly feeling rather lucky for.

"No no, miss." he bowed his head a little, smiling lightly. "I...I can take care of myself, usually. Who knows if I'd even be able to come across her, anyway. She sound like a slippery one." he said, trying to imagine what he'd do, if he did come across her. The thought wasn't to savory in his mind, seeing as she was indeed a Reya, just like Nestra....
PostPosted: Thu May 17, 2007 4:57 am

"Usually, I feel, is the operative word here," the Commandante said gently. "I mean you no offence, Itzal, but perhaps it would be best if you were to avoid her. If you catch sight of her, concealing yourself or leaving altogether would be best. And if she makes that impossible...only be certain that she does not know you have met me. If she were to know that I had asked your assistance, it could place you in grave danger."

The thought worried her, Clytaemnestra realised abruptly. It worried her more than was reasonable. After all, she'd only just met the fellow...

"...Would you mind if I kept your company a little longer? I doubt I shall get much further in my searching for the time being, and compared to the soldiers I'm used to you're a very pleasant change."

And she wasn't sure where that had come from, either. Ah well. No sense questioning a harmless impulse, particularly not one that offered her a restful evening in good company. The longer she stayed here, the longer she could protect him. It made sense. It was justifiable. She was not the sort to maintain any nagging doubts about such decisions, and now was no exception. Useful allies were a resource worth guarding.

Itzal couldn't help bit grin, and give a soft, sheepish laugh as she commented about his ability to 'protect himself', which faded off as she continued to speak, and he gave a rather grave little nod. "Alright, then...If I see her at all, I'll tell you at least, if we were to meet again. But I won't approach her." he said, nodding, as if to cement that idea within his mind. He found it unusual that such a militant individual would care about his seemingly insignificant safety, and it touched him a little, though he didn't comment on it.

He brightened a bit at the question. "I'd love some company." he replied, smiling lightly at the little compliment. "You're...quite a change from the girls I normally meet, too." he said with a little chuckle, hoping she wouldn't mind the little tease.

"Shall we walk? I was gonna explore a little more down the beach till nightfall. " he said, pawing at the soft, moist sand. He had wanted to see where it lead, afterall, though he doubted he'd be able to cover the vast expanse in one lazy afternoon. Nevertheless, he would enjoy it much more with Nestra's company

Clytaemnestra chuckled, shaking a lock of her mane out of her eyes. She'd never been like other girls. Itzal was the first person in a long time who seemed to appreciate it. "Walking sounds good," she agreed. "I need to stretch out this game leg of mine before it seizes up on me. And quite frankly, if I were like other mares I'd be worried. Femininity isn't all it's cracked up to be."

Few things were, in the end.

She set off along the shore at Itzal's side, the ocean murmuring in the background, content for the present to be peaceful, gentle Nestra.

Melantho could wait.

The world could wait.
