The dawn was rising, and with it, the notorious alpha of the graveyard hyenas. Mafa was jolted into the world of the awake as a ray of the early morning sun blazed into her skull-den. Grumbling lightly, the female stood, shaking loose any dust that had embedded in her coat over the night. With a toothy yawn, she stepped out of the gaping mouth of the skull, squinting to keep the sun from her eyes.

With a sigh, the large hyena took a few steps forward, stretching out her hind limbs as she did so. Pausing slightly, a course for the day ran out through her head. She'd probably go patrol the territory for a while, see if anything was out of order from the previous day. Perhaps track down some of the others and obtain their reports. Perhaps a hunt. With her mind made up, Mafa moved away from her den, still a bit groggy, but ready to start her day.

Kivumbi'wingu wasn't sure where he was, nor did he know what exactly he was looking for, but in the early hours of the morning he had pressed on. He had been looking for food for quite a while, and had caught on to a distant scent, it's owner of which he didn't quite know. It was the smell of something strange... of something (or 'somethings') that had been alive once, but were no longer walking the earth. It wasn't exactly the scent of fresh, rotting flesh, but rather a sort of old, pleasant, dead smell that Kivu thought would be good to seek out and, ultimately, roll in.

However, as he neared closer to where the scent was coming from, he realised that the scent belonged not to a rotting animal, but to a place. And what a strange place it was.

There were bones, my there were bones! Sure, Kivu was only nearing the border of this alien territory, but he could see them everywhere, littering the area as far as the eye could see. The rogue hyena squinted... and, far off into the distance, he could make out the shape of something quite big. It looked like a big head bone, a good place for shelter and a den... although Kivu couldn't be sure unless he good a better look.

He paused, curiousity grabbing his senses. Should he look? Dare he look?
He was already on the border of some strange pack he didn't know about. Sure, the scent was inviting, but there were other scents mingled there. Scents belonging to... well, members of his own kind. And they might not welcome an intruder to the lands so warmly.

He backed away, slowly, deciding to best the situation by taking it safe. He'd go off now. Nobody would see him, and he'd be alright. He could go chasing some ladies somewhere else, or something.

Kivu turned to leave.

He'd pulled an all nighter this time, like he did every once in a while, and while some where waking up, the rather large male was returning, a bone in his mouth with some meat still on it, he'd left the rest of his prey for the vultures after satisfied, but that wouldn't keep him fromgetting the little remains off this leg bone. And, hyenas having some of the most powerfull jaws in the savannah, he could break it up like he usually did.

But their nose was strong too.

He'd caught a scent leading towards the graeyard, an unknown one, but definately not lion. He was curious, but as to notseem like some sort of friendly guy, he always tricked himself in his mind that he was just doing his job as a guard. Besdies, he had nothing better to do.

Soon his home was in view, and the tip-top of the skull Mafa lived in was, and when closer, the beginning of the eye cavity was showing too. He wouldn't be able to see if Maf was there or not, her fur blended in neatly, and the skull itself looked pretty small from here.

But the other was in view. The brown of this other male was actually a nice blending, but his white-yellow fur an mane was more visible, more in bloches then in lines like the skulls that littered the place. He was inview of this stranger too, but he wasn't afraid, it was a hyena.

Normally, he would bark out a greeting, but he had this bone in his mouth, see.

Not too far behind her caretaker, Kelello trotted with a spring, despite the large, shiny bone wedged between her jaws. She had taken her pick after Tibuka had left the bony remains of his steal. She had picked out a lanky bone, with rough, rounded edges nearly the size of her long muzzle. The bone shifted uneasily in her mouth as she tried to chew, but found herself unsuccessful; her problem was beyond the size of the hard object, but rather that she couldn't find the hunger-filling satisfaction in it that her hyena superiors could. Disheartened, she spat the bone out and flopped lazily over it in a childish pout.

Against the bright morning sun, she could see the dark edges of a sly creature moving about the grounds. Curiousity took hold of the young wild dog immediately. She climbed off the bare bone and trotted in the direction of the stranger. As she neared him, she could tell from his awkward stance that this was a hyena, however, the scent that he gave off was unfamiliar to her. Her eyes gleamed as they fell on a familiar hyena in the distance; Tibuka. Suddenly growing cautious from the silent tension, she slowed her pace, until she was shielded from the danger behind her reluctant babysitter.

"Who's that?," she questioned, or rather announced, for her voice had not wavered even at danger's paws, and the echo of it danced and clattered on the bones in the distance.

Mafa, much like her subordinate, was too returning from a meal. But she had had to work for hers. No other predators had spared any delectable bits for the scavanger, so she'd put some effort into her ever seldom meal. It had been a hare that Mafa had subdued, and she scarfed it down on the spot. Now, returning home, Mafa felt quite satisfied.

Her head was held high as she trotted over the boarder that seperated the southlands from the lion side of the graveyard. Of course, Mafa didn't see it as intrusion, as they would. She just took note that she was treading on what was already hers. What had been taken from her. Whenever she passed this particular land, a swelling of anger rose in the alpha's chest. Given a lion, she'd take that anger out on the beast quite swiftly. But alas, no such chance encounter today.

But today, something new presented itself near the boarder. A new scent was wafting around, and upon further investigation, Mafa noted a stranger. A male hyena, one Mafa hadn't seen before. He was obviously full grown, so where was he from? And what was he doing on her turf? Trotting quickly to the other, Mafa circled him once, asserting her dominance, showing him that he had no place to run. Head high and tone devoid of any emotion, Mafa zeroed her gaze on him,

"Who may you be... Doing what here?"

Mafa deferred, that it was to join their ranks. If it was or wasn't, he was going to stay unless Mafa determined him otherwise unfit. Up ahead, a bit further in the bone pile, Mafa spotted an emerging figure. Muddy brown, loping gait, it could only have been Tibuka.

"Who may you be... Doing what here?"

Kibumbi'wingu's ears perked up as he heard the voice, and he slowly turned to find Mafa standing in his path. Kivu cursed... she was blocking all means of escape, and had an air of importance surrounding her. Indeed, she was not one to pick a fight with, especially on alien territory like this.

Well, this was just wonderful. He'd managed to have gotten himself found out, and it had only been a matter of minutes.

'Great work, Kivu,' he told himself with a drawn-out sigh, 'You've dug yourself into a hole, no doubt, and it's practically impossible to climb out of it now.'

He looked back up into the alpha's eyes - an aqua colour, it looked like, though he couldn't be sure, as they were shadowed by thick black hair. Indeed, she looked a formidable oponent... Kivu bristled a little, but decided that he didn't need a fight right now, so he stopped as soon as he had begun.

"I'm just a passing hyena," he said, trying his best to keep his voice sounding smooth and calm, "I scented this place from a while away, and was curious, so I came here," he paused, and flattened his ears, "I'm dreadfully sorry for being intrusive. I shall take my leave now."

He decided to play it cool, be polite. There was no knowing how many of this stranger's packmates were here... he couldn't sense the prescence of others, but he was wary that an ambush could happen at any time.
Not so far off, he scented more animals... however, Kivu himself was oblivious that anyone else was watching him. He was far too preoccupied with dealing with the woman here.

The male snorted as the little wild dog hid behind hm, and spit out his bone, deciding it'd be better to not confront a stranger looking like some dog that just walked around chewing bones. "I don't know him. " Yes, him, smelled male enough. He trotted towards the male, slowing shortly wen he realised Mafa had arrived at the scene too.

From here, he couldn't hear anything so well, even with those large ears of a hyena, and all he could differ was 'who'. If she was asking who, maybe she didn't know this one either. Tibuka raised his head andlet out a yip to announce his arrival, then continued on an easy trot towards the two, crunching skinny boned with each pace.

Mafa's defensive stance didn't waiver. The female stood stead-fast, glaring at the stranger with a gaze of ice. It wasn't that she wanted him out, not by any means. She just needed to assess the animal, see if he was ripe for the picking. Mafa wasn't one for fighting with her own species, it was the lions that she had a vendetta against, and it was they that would suffer at her jaws.

"No such thing as just taking your leave, hyena. But no need to fret, curiosity only kills the cat. It makes the hyena stronger."

She lowered her head, making herself appear rather eerie. A new recruit was always up for the snatching, she deducted, and this one wasn't about to get away.

Momentarily, the alpha's gaze shifted, looking behind the new male. There stood Tibuka, and behind him, being as much of a coward as usual, Kelello. She paid them no attention for the time being, there were more pressing matters at hand.

Kivu's brow furrowed as he saw two more strangers approaching... a brown hyena, slightly taller than himself, and a smaller creature trotting behind.
He leaned forward to look closer at her, and raised an eyebrow. That didn't look like a hyena to him at all... rather, it looked like a colourful orange rat that had gotten lost on it's journey to Crazyville. He'd seen an animal like her before... but where? She was... was... aaah, that's right. A wild dog. One of them weird types.

Switching his gaze back to the alpha, he shivered. Mafa's eyes bore into him... and it was making him dreadfully uncomfortable.

"So... if I can't leave..." he paused, his eyes narrowing warily, "What are you going to do with me? All this talk of strength and hyenas and curiousity... it's horribly confusing, if I may say so myself."

He was, in fact, confused. So confused, part of him wanted to dart away from the menacing form of Mafa... but then, another part told him it was useless to leave, and willed him to stay put until the opportunity to escape arised. He took a delicate step forward with one paw, and looked around. There didn't seem to be a big chance of escape... but if he looked harder... just maybe he'd find...

Nothing.

Kivu's shoulders sagged.

"Of course you don't know me," he snapped, frustrated, at Tibuka, "I've never been here before. Now, see here... if you don't let me leave, what am I meant to do? Be your little preybeast or something? You going to shred me up? Kill me?"

Kivu was heating up.

"...or what?" he spat, taking a few deep breaths, and wondering when - or if- he'd feel the knife-sharp raking of claws and fangs down his neck.

"Mind, I wasn't talking to you. "

Cyan eyes rolled in annoyance to this loud-mouthed male, trotting around this new, blotched-with-white male towards Mafa, to spare him the need to turn around al lthe time. "Hello Mafa. " He dipped his nose respectfully to the alpha, then sat a respetfull distance away, aware that Mafa wasn't likely to appreciate him just sitting right next to her.

The male snorted, ears folding back as the hyena threw out insane ideas. Normally, he'd snap right back, and opened his mouth to do so, but he remembered in time of Mafa. When she was around, she was incharge of snapping at others. So instead, he just faked a yawn, shrugging his shoulders as an attempt to relax his prickling mane.

Mafa's whispy tail twitched a bit in frustration. This newcomer was much to inquisitive for her liking. She kept her eyes glued on him as he stammered something out. Taking a step in advance, the alpha huffed,

"I will do what I want."

Mafa took a step in advance towards the male, closing in on him even further. She could see that he was wary of the situation, and a wary animal was one that was apt to flee. Nothing ever fleed from Mafa's graveyard. Mafa circled to the opposite side to Tibuka, cutting Kivu off from any escape route he could conjure up. She nodded a greeting to the muddy male, thankful that he had showed up, as he ws prooving useful.

"Kill you? Where'd you get an idea like that? Unless... You'd like us to do so, because that can surely be arranged."

Mafa tossed her head up, letting out that eerie cackle that the species was so notorious for,

"However, you're much more useful alive."

Kivu tensed, and his ears flattened back. He couldn't help but sense the danger all around him, mostly in the prescence of the woman. He had the feeling that she held more power than she looked - strong, cunning and... and...

Well, he took her words seriously. This girl meant business. Slowly, he backed up, and realised that he'd been trapped, cut off from all sides. Any attempts to escape were sure to be nothing more than futile. His tail drooped, and he growled a deep, loud rumble. A fearful yelp rose in his throat, but being a proud creature, he forced it back down.

He looked to Tibuka and Mafa with defiant eyes, yet at the same time he looked unsure of what to do next.

"Useful... alive?" his muscles tightened, and he felt slightly sick, "What will you do with me?"

He paused.

"What use is a rogue hyena to pack-animals like you?"

As the words rolled off his tongue, he slowly understood. Maybe they weren't going to kill him, nor torture him. Maybe, just maybe, they wanted to -

No, they couldn't want to recruit him. What use would a scrawny hyena like him be to a pack?

The male got back to his paws, taking a half-pace to the side to help keep the male from running off. Whenthe male growled, he wasn't even suprised, and gave a short, warning one himself, as if to say 'don't even think about it'. But this warning ended quickly when the male stopped to speak.

Dense, apperently. Was he so slow at getting this was some recruiting? He was a hyena, but maybe his brain had been switched with that of a lion.He kept quiet, however. It felt almost sill to not just snap out, but as much as the muddy male wanted to, he wouldn't. If Mafa was around, she did the talking.

Kelello glanced at one hyena after the other, suddenly feeling uneasiness prickle her ginger fur. She stood still, watching as an arrangement was formed between Tibuka and Mafa so that the newcomer could not escape.

Slowly, she dragged her large paws to an open space between her two superiors to provide what little help she could offer, being of such a small size that the strange hyena could easily leap over her. Considering this, she turned sideways and let her fur up. The young wild dog lowered her head and narrowed her green eyes into slits, realeasing a series of 'He's as she attempted to mimick Mafa's threatening cackle. Her tail gave a curt wag of pride before she took her up her position again. Maybe now she could proove herself to be a truly useful hyena.. or whatever she was.

The drill was not unfamiliar to her, as she had witnessed Shira's pack entrance and the hostility that she had faced before acceptance. So, at the rogue hyena's questioning, she could not help but to let out a more canine yelp of laughter.

"Everything's useful here," she whispered to Tibuka, near one side of her flank.

"Right?"

Mafa rolled her eyes slowly, very slow on the uptake, this one. But alas, brains weren't exactly what she was looking for; it was braun. And this guy seemed to have plenty of it. He'd fit in just fine. Mafa took a step foreward, closing in on the distance between the two,

"What use? The use is numbers, strength. You see, we've got these pesky neighbors that really need to be ganged up on and tossed the hell out. The more hyenas we have, the easier that's going to be. Capiche?"

Mafa scoffed, her attention slowly moving from the new comer over to Kelello, who had emerged from hiding. The little wild dog was progressing strangely. Never in her life would Mafa had thought that the little creature would grow to /like/ living here, to even take after her captors. But alas, it was all for the better, the more she felt like she belonged, the more obediant she'd be.

Looking back to Kivu, her icy gaze narrowed in on him. Giving the male the hint that he obviously had no other choice; he was stuck here with this motley crew.
