What was the first romance novel you read, and what age were you?
--------------------------------

I was 12 when I read my first romance novel. My twin sister had asked my mum one day if she could read mum's books, as she had so many. My mum said no, that they weren't suitable for us at out age.

How was it my fault that curiosity got the better of me?

(Had I not paid ANY attention in those HRE classes???)

So I picked up the book mum had got from the library: Loving the Highlander, by Janet Chapman. I started reading; yeah, this is a pretty good book. Okay, that was one steamy kiss...hmm....a bit of touchy-feely there....OH MY GOD!! MORGAN AND SADIE ARE DOING IT ON THE GROUND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WILDERNESS!!

Okay, I was surprised, to say the least. But most of all, I was intrigued. So I finished the book, and I loved it. I had to read another.

So off I trotted downstairs, to my mother's bookshelf, filled with hundreds of books. I mean that literally: there are HUNDEREDS (at least 200)

I examined the shelf...hmm.....which was the next one I was to read? I picked up one: Devil's Bride, by Stephanie Laurens. Being the naive child I was, I assumed that this was a real Devil we were talking about here, you know, the one from hell? This copy of the book didn't have a synopsis at the back, only on the first page of the book, but how was I to know that? So I put this one down, thinking it too odd to read.

So I went along the shelf. On a Wicked Dawn, also by Stephanie Laurens, caught my eye with it's green spine. I took it out, read the back. Sounded pretty interesting. Read it, got a bit more surprised over more love scenes, and finished it. Loved it. Had to read more.

Having noticed the mention of 'Devil' in that book, I correctly assumed that maybe Devil's Bride was the first in the series, and that it was just a nickname for a Duke, and not literally the Devil. So I read it, and then the next in the series, and then the next. I read the whole series, and loved it completely.

Up to date, the Cynster novels are still my favourite. I've read them at least four times each, several of them more (like On a Wicked Dawn: I must have read this about seven times already!).

I also have to commemorate all novels by Johanna Lindsay, Jude Deveraux, Nora Roberts, Janet Chapman and Elizabeth Lowell. These are great authors, and I have simply adored every single book I've read of theirs.

Now at the age of 16, I have read pretty much majority of my mother's books. I told her when I was 13 that I was reading her books, and she told me to stop.

Did I listen?

Hell no!

So at the present, she still doesn't know that I am reading her books, but do I care? No; I mean, I hate deceiving her, but I'm going to keep reading those romance novels, because I love them so much.

Read books by these authors if you haven't already; it's definitely worth it.

Mine was a little different. I can't really remember- I either got a hold of a book my grandma left behind(Fern Michael's Captive Desires or something like that) or it was Aphrodites Passion by Julie Kenner.

SOrry if I seem crude, but I learned about sex and how it works from those books- though I was more interested in the whole beat a guy down to his knees with emotions thing. It took me years to get comfortable to take those books with me to school and places like that.

Same here; I learnt about sex (excuse the crudeness) from those books - HRE at school just never appealed to me razz

But yeah, the emotional side of the stories were definitely what captivated me, and kept me going back for more.

But unlike you, I would never have the courage to take romance books to school to read; my friends would ridicule me to no end, simply because they haven't read such books yet, and would think that I prefer to read about love and relationships than experience the real thing.

I don't really care if they tease me; after all, I stand up for what I believe in, and don't care too much what others think, but I'd still rather save the books for the sanctuary of my room.

First romance book I read was when I was in college, so I was maybe 19? I had just recently gotten into recreational reading and was walking through B. Dalton and saw The Secret Life of Bryan by Lori Foster sitting on one of the New Release tables they has set up in front of the store. The cover was all bright and eye catching and the blurb on the back sounded interesting.

Up until that point I had only been reading fiction and had no clue Lori Foster was a romance writer. I was sitting in the student center when I happened upon the sex part. It made me a little paranoid, but I was hooked on Foster's books after that and through her found other romance authors I simply adore now.

I'm a very picky reader, but once I've found an author I like I try to read everything I can find by them. And luckily most have written a lot of books like Christine Feehan, Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn, Karen Marie Moning, Sherrilyn Kenyon (Kinley McGregor) and Lori Foster. I also read a lot of Sabrina Jefferies (just her newer books, though, starting with her trilogy about the b*****d sons of Prinny and her new series about the School for Heiresess. I tried reading one of her first novels and it just didn't grab my interest like her new books do. It wasn't bad, but I didn't enjoy it as much), Erin McCarthy and Sylvia Day.

There's too many to name. XD

Not kidding. THere are far too many good romance authors to state.

True, but there are also not so good ones.

I hate Nora Roberts. I can't say it enough. And there's plenty of 80's writers who don't appeal to me either.

I love the b*****d Son's of Prinny! My favorite was the first, but the second was good. The third wasn't as good as the first two.

Gavyne was very, uh...bitter. And wounded. I happen to love me a tortured hero. Didn't much like Christabel, though. She kind of made the third book not as good for me. I LOVED Marcus (And I loved the whole thing about his sister and Foxmore (their book was good)). And, well, Alec was just awesome.

Finally someone else who doesn't like her. I thought I'd never see the day.

Plenty of people do, she probably appeals to the less romantically inclined as well, but to me, her characters are to strong from beginning to end, to independent and pragmatic. And there's jsut something else...I only read one book that I liked by her.

I think I mentioned this but it was either Captive Desires by Fern Michaels or Aphrodites Passion by Julie Kenner.

Have fun!

Yeah, that's who I didn't like iether. The story was cool, Gavyne was fascinating, but there was something about Christabel.

Alec and Katherine are by far my favorite pairing, but I think the second one had the better storyline( Marcus and Regina(?))
