The girl stood shaking on the roof of the apartment complex. Behind her, an almost broken neon sign blinked the word ‘DI E’. It was supposed to say ‘PARADISE’ but over the years many of the letters had blinked out until only the three remained. The wind whipped her long brown hair around her face and into her eyes but she took no notice. Her normally green eyes were a milky, off white. Her pale hands were clasped together in front of her chest, clutching the necklace that rested there. Her cheery green and pink sundress was now dirty and whipped around her legs wildly, threatening to tangle around them and trip her. She could faintly hear people shouting at her from below. One bare foot took a step forward and into the open air in front of her. It rested there for a moment before the second followed. She continued to tremble as she walked further and further into the air. People below gasped in horror and astonishment while rescue workers who had been called out to the scene began to set up special blow up mats and a net. She continued to stare straight ahead. She could faintly see the lines of a figure moving towards her. She could tell from the way the light went around it’s curves that it was a woman, a young woman to be more precise. She tentatively stretched one hand towards the oncoming figure. With the other, she kept a tight grip on her necklace. Suddenly a piercing screech brought her back to her senses. The wind became a rushing roar around her ears. She looked towards the oncoming ground and she realized she was falling…falling…falling.
Machaela sat straight up in bed. Sweat drenched her pillow and made her hair cling to her face. Breathing heavily she glanced at the clock. “Nine-thirty…already?” She hit the off switch to stop the annoying screech of it’s buzzer. Rubbing her eyes she thought back to the dream. She had been having the same one for over a month. It always ended the same way, with her falling. This time she had gotten far enough to tell whether or not the figure was a man or a woman though. She threw back her flowered comforter and set her feet…on air. She looked down at her foot which hovered an inch or so above the ground before it finally let gravity take over. She frowned and bent down to rub it. The tingling sensation that filled her every time she had the dream seemed to be concentrated in her legs this morning. She grabbed her towel from behind her door and ducked into the shower.
As she undressed she couldn’t help but think that this was no ordinary dream. None of the dream books or websites she visited were any help. She sighed and stepped under the stream of the shower. She let the hot water massage her scalp before putting in shampoo and scrubbing it to a rich lather. She stayed under the steady beat of the water until she was sure that her worries from her dream, and the soap was gone before getting out and drying off. She wrapped the towel around her body and shivered as she opened the door. Her little brother ran to her and grinned. “Guess what! Sarah’s coming over!” He said happily before running off. Machaela grinned and ducked into her room before she had to endure being this cold any longer.
An hour later Machaela was dressed and cooking breakfast when the door bell rang. She put the spatula on the counter before going to answer it. When she opened the door she threw her arms around the person standing there. “Sarah! I’m so happy you’re here!” Her friend grinned and hugged her back. “Me too. I’m so happy to finally get out of the house.” She waved to her mother who honked the horn before pulling out of the driveway.
“You look great.” Machaela said as she and Sarah went into the kitchen. She was labeled as a goth/punk and had been for a few years. Her parents didn‘t used to be very accepting of her style but now they were more lenient. Today she had framed her eyes with heavy black eyeliner and sparkling purple eye shadow. Handcuff earrings dangled from her ears. Her brown hair was cut into a pixie style cut and the tips were even dyed hot pink. Michaela knew for a fact that getting that cut had taken some convincing. Her black and pink G.I.R. shirt was covered in a cupcake print but that didn’t stop her from putting a few safety pins in the shoulders. Her black and white plaid skirt also had a few safety pins in it. (This was more to keep the skirt from falling apart after being washed so many times). Black and white striped socks reached for her knees. She took off her oriental print converses and set them by the door before walking in further. “Thanks. So do you.” She gestured towards Machaela’s own striped dress. “Did you make it?” She helped herself to a Pop Tart from the cabinet and hopped onto the counter, swinging her legs back and forth.
Michaela nodded and added some cheese to the eggs in the pan. “Sure did. Yesterday actually.” Michaela was studying to be a clothing designer. She made most of her clothes. She looked down at her green and pink striped dress and smiled. “I had that dream again last night. What about you?” Sarah had been having a dream almost identical to hers but wasn’t as scared as Michaela was. She would practically run out onto the air. Sarah nodded, her stormy blue eyes shining with excitement. “I saw the person coming towards me.” She said after she had swallowed. “It was a she. I almost had grabbed her but she wouldn’t let go of that stupid necklace…she never has.” She frowned. “I want to know if she is who I think she is.” She finished her pastry and hopped down. “Oh…and one more thing. It wasn’t in the dream though…” She tapped her chin as she wandered outside. “I flew this morning.” And the door shut behind her.

hmm... She doesn't seem all that surprised about her flying though. I guess I'll have to read more to find out why. ^^

Machaela and Sarah jumped on the trampoline in silence. Machaela was quiet because she couldn’t understand what was going on, and Sarah was keeping her mouth closed because Machaela wasn’t saying anything. (and she knew if she started talking she would never stop) Finally, Machaela just sat down. Sarah bounced to a stop next to her. “What’s wrong? C’mon let’s bounce.” Michaela rose to her feet with a plastic smile.
“Did I wig you out when I said that?” Sarah asked, as she unconsciously stroked the silver necklace around her throat. It turned her neck green, but she only took it off to sleep and take a shower. Now, as Machaela glanced at it, the grinning skull was making her uneasy. “Can you take that thing off please? It looks funny.” She asked. She barely noticed the tremble of - fear perhaps- in her own voice. Sarah frowned. “Well aren’t you going to take yours off?” She asked, crossing her arms. Machaela jumped up, eyes wide. The sudden shift made Sarah lose her balance and she fell. “No! I can’t! I-I’ll…” Michaela sighed. “I can’t. I don’t know why but I just feel like I can’t.” Sarah stood back up, fuming.
“Come on! It’s just a cheap necklace! What’s the big deal?” She asked, her voice rising.
“Oh yeah? Well what’s yours then? Tell me what makes yours so special!” Michaela crossed her arms. Sarah’s cheeks flushed pink.
“I don’t know! At least I‘m not acting like some blond in a horror movie!” Machaela suddenly realized Sarah wasn’t on the trampoline anymore…she was hovering about two feet above it. “Sarah…y-you’re flying.” She pointed to her friend’s feet. Sarah’s hands were clenched in fists at her side. “I know.” She said coldly. “I’ve been practicing for a few weeks now. I didn’t tell you because you always seemed so freaked out whenever we would talk about those dreams. I realized that it is not just a dream for me. It’s going to happen.” She began to slowly lower. Machaela backed away. “You wouldn’t have trusted me. You would have thought I was insane. You don’t know what else I can do now. And I won‘t tell you either. I bet you can do them yourself.” Sarah crossed her arms. “Machaela…you need to let go. People say there’s a fine line between reality and fantasy. I say there’s a wall. And the only way to go over the wall…” She was once more sitting on the trampoline. “Is to fly. At least in my opinion. I‘m no scientist.”
Machaela stared at her. “You were flying.” She said again. “In the air…” Sarah rolled her eyes. “I know. It freaked me out at first too. But I won’t let my fear hold me back. It‘s what I am now. I need to accept it.” She stood and hopped off of the trampoline. “Don’t tell your mom…she’ll think we’re crazy.” She walked back inside. All of a sudden, Machaela heard Sarah’s voice in her head. ‘I’m going home. Just tell your mom I didn’t feel too good.’ After the shaking left her hands Machaela stared at the backdoor. What was happening to her friend?
Machaela finally went inside, but only after Sarah had left. She went straight to her room and locked the door. She took a few deep breaths to calm herself and closed her eyes. What if she could fly too? What if Sarah was right and the dreams were real? She could feel the ground slipping away and almost smiled. Was she seriously flying? Peeking one eye open she gulped when she saw the floor wasn’t touching her feet. Fear of falling made her lose her concentration and she did- fall that is. She rubbed the new sore spot on her back and glanced at her feet. The feeling of pins and needles remained. ‘Up…up!’ She thought desperately. Finally, she began to rise above the ground once more. “Oh my gosh! I’m flying!“ The pin and needle sensation that filled her now was almost unbearable. “Come on…come on…” The light on her night stand began to flicker and sparks flew from the socket it was plugged into. Her alarm clock suddenly began it’s annoying buzz and her stereo blasted so loud the windows shook. Machaela’s hair on her arms stood on end as a surge of electrical power coursed through her. Her necklace seemed to vibrate as well. She grasped it and held on tight. She wanted to scream but bit her tongue instead. She tasted iron and knew it was bleeding.
Suddenly, it all stopped and Machaela fell onto the ground. Her light blinked off, her alarm clock and her stereo died. Machaela’s mother was the only sound that could be heard. “Machaela!! What happened? Are you okay? Machaela!” She yelled, banging on the door. Machaela groaned and pushed herself to a sitting position. “I-I’m fine.” She said coughing. She quickly stood and hurried to the door to unlock it. “I’m okay. I just…um…” She looked behind her and into her room. “I accidentally touched the light socket while it was on. I’m okay though.” She gave her mom a small smile. “I’ll clean it up.” Her mother frowned. “You touched the light socket? Are you serious?” She looked past Machaela and into the bedroom. “I’ll call the doctor.” She said and went to look for the phone.
Meanwhile, Sarah sat at home on the roof. Her hair seemed to dance around her although there wasn’t even the slightest breeze. A strange electrical aura surrounded her and she stared blankly towards the direction of Michaela’s home. She could sense that Michaela was trying to use her power and thought about adding to it…until she felt how strong her own power had become. She smiled and blinked. The field of power around her was suddenly gone. She gently walked down the slope of the roof to the ladder that she had earlier leaned against the side. She climbed down and walked inside. Her parents were out and her brother and sister were at friends houses.
Checking the clock, she mentally flipped on the T.V. Sarah grinned as she flew over to the couch. She only used her powers when no one was home. It was good practice too. Sarah settled onto the couch with a small smile. She had always wanted to be special, to be unique and different from everyone else. Now she was. She raised a finger and pointed at the television. A spark leapt from the tip of her finger and the channel changed. Who knew that electrical currents could do so much. Sarah yawned and stretched. Monday meant school. And school meant crowds. She sighed and rolled onto her side, letting the noise of the television become white noise while her thoughts raced across her mind. Crowds were getting harder to handle. Strange thoughts came in unannounced and took the place of her own. Migraines? Ha! Those were for wimps. Hearing over fifty random thoughts, tasting their bittersweet messages on her tongue, it made her sick. Migraines were nothing compared to these…these…mind numbing monstrosities! Sarah heard a click of a key in the front door lock and reached for her headphones. Her families thoughts were definitely not welcome any more.

Yeay, second part! Oooo, now I'm all curious about the necklaces and their powers. I also can't wait to see what happens with the mind reading ability. I do have one suggestion for you, in the beginning you use the word silent(ence) several times in the first paragraph. Try finding different words to represent the silence, it'll spice things up a bit.
