Howdy.

Going into the second semester of my senior year at Ringling now, and its going to get pretty crunchy soon. Its daunting... Im soon going to be booted out into the employable world and have to compete directly with the amazing illustrators out there right now. Just think, show your stuff to TOR Book Publishing, and they have to grade you against people like Jon Foster. RHOMBUS.

Anyway, heres some recent stuff, and Ill try to explain exactly what it was for. Some of it Im not sure if Ive posted before or not.

We had to do something for a charity. So I did a kid chopping up a dragon... which I thought fit Childs Play perfectly. The bottom of the image needs work, as well as the dragon needing more of a texture thats less like just regular skin.

We had to illustrate a blog by a soldier in Iraq. The story was generally about how he was trying to resist becoming the monster that he had seen his fellow soldiers and enemy insurgents become. This I had to do very very very quickly. So I didnt use my OVERRENDAR style and got it done in a couple hours. I think its pretty successful for what it is, but I cant tell where I cut corners, and could have done a lot better even with just 30-40 more minutes. I was pretty damn busy that week.

This is Tesla. We had to do a 'celebrity' portrait. Theres a lot of things that I dont like about this picture; its just kind of boring, and the hands suck. I like the rendering of the face though. Eye could look more like its focusing somewhere.

This was for an open assignment.
Its a Stradivariobot... yeah. Yeah.

I had never seen the "Iraq soldier" illustration before, and I think it's really great. I wish you did more work like that, but you know I often prefer graphic pieces over things that are heavily rendered. XD

Maybe heavily rendered things intimidate me too much~ OO WEE OO.

I've always been jealous of your superb CG skills (in reference to first picture). It's like... so smooth yet crisp at the same time. D:

You definitely have skills. :]

I hope you didn't really expect us to be able to give you good critique, FOOL. gonk

I like the solider one and the child's play one the best. 3nodding Although, it looks less like the kid is attacking with full force the dragon's body, and more like he's hovering in air carrying a sword. I don't know what you can do about that though. I guess you can try repainting the legs farther away, to make it look like he's at the apex of a jump. Whatever. Just my two cents.

Mmm, candy for my eyes. pirate

The second picture looks kind of... off as far as composition goes. I think. The hands in the foreground don't really pop as much as they should - maybe lighten the sky a little where they're above the horizon line to make them stand out more.

Otherwise, delicious. The first picture in particular makes me happy. Yes.

I love the textures on the Tesla piece. I do agree that the Iraq piece could benefit from some more time though.

Thanks peeps.

Tawney, Iconoclast: ... MATHEMATICAL!

lol plz: I like how you then proceeded to give me some critique! Don't ever think that someones too high (not that Im anything compared to some people... Craig Mullins? sad ) up that you cant knock em them around some. What you said makes sense, and Ill work on that if I ever get around to reworking on any of my stuff. Which I never do unfortunately. I say 'Done!' when its obviously not, nod at all the critiques and then get lazy and play FF12.

Zahir: Agreed. That picture needs quite a bit of work. I lightened up the hands some and I think that helped, and if I were to go back into it (see above comment on the unfortunate likelihood of this) I would also make the background a shiteload better than it is. I spent the least amount of time on that part... and did things I KNEW were wrong, but I just wanted to go to sleep at that point. Also... I really stopped working very hard when I got to the line stuff on his boots; they are a crapload messier than everything else.

Dr. Valentine: I like the textures too. I don't like why I used the textures though... to hide the fact that other than his face, their isnt a thing that I actually resolved. Plus the textures are a bit overpowering. I think between the textures and the face being at the same kind of focal point that I personally just get 'eh' about the picture.

The art is really fab, it's pretty much out of my league critique wise, but i wanted to ask you about Ringling? How is the school?

I'm a freshman this year and looking to apply some time as a transfer to some art schools, possibly Ringling's Animation Department.

I hadn't heard of the school before i went to National Portfolio day on the 7th, and breifly talked to a woman who introduced me to the school. Acceptance to the animation program seemed really competitive, but i've always dreamed of studying animation. I dont remember what the tuition was, but it looked low. I would have applied for fall 2007 but i couldn't swallow the 350 application fee before the 15th.
