It was a shock how quickly the cubs were growing -- and that was a word Daimyn needed to remove from his vocabulary. They weren't "cubs" anymore; what with Jing's and Ai's manes growing in, and the girls standing almost as tall as their mother, Daimyn had to keep reminding himself that they were almost old enough to be out on their own by now.
He was paced just ahead of his eldest son, eyeing the horizon warily. The zebra herd was just ahead at the waterhole -- a perfect chance for Jing'Fei to sharpen up on his hunting skills.
He'd already picked out two potential prey to go after. An old, obviously weak stallion stood on the outside of the herd, trying to keep close to avoid a predator encounter. On the other side of the herd, a foal was wandering away from its mother, but it was farther away, and going after it was risking alerting the zebras to their presence.
"See one?" he asked, turning to Jing'Fei.

Spring had come early for Africa, it seemed, as there was an abundance of growth spurts to go around. As the youth moved along behind his father he was aware of the jittery feelings taking residence in his belly. This would be his first time actually hunting more than mice and birds and bugs, large prey... Sure, he'd taken some practice runs to see how well he kept up with the prey, but he was pacing himself. He hadn't tried actually taking one down yet...
Today was obviously going to be different.
As his father's sleek figure came to a stop, so Jing'fei's did also, sliding up alongside Daimyn's right and gazing over the herd. He too spotted the calf stumbling away from it's parent. Was there a chance that they could sneak in close enough to get to it before the herd became alarmed?
"A little one... on the outside of the herd, but it's kind of far in." He muttered quietly.

Daimyn nodded, thinking it over. It did seem like the logical choice; the foal wouldn't put up as much of a fight, and it would be easier for the two lions to bring it down.
"I saw it too," he answered, sniffing the air. They were far enough away to go unnoticed for the moment, but they needed to approach from the opposite direction if they wanted the wind on their side.
"Let's skirt around them, go at it from the other side," he suggested, starting off again at a walk away from and around the zebra herd.
