I was thinking of ordering some online, but I don't know where to look or what to get. What kind of cards would you guys reccomend for a newbie?

There is a site I can recommend that reviews all kinds of decks. I'm sure you can find one you like (and I think they sell a few of them too, if not I think they tell you who does). Give me a couple of seconds to get the link for you.

Yes, thats a good website.
Though alot of people will say it depends on the person. That tarot decks will 'choose' you. They seem to find you in the most random times, or they may just 'jump out' at you in a store or wherever you are looking for them.

My first deck I was in a new agey-ish store in Missouri, called Treasures in the Attic. And I was looking at the books and the music (awesome faeryish incl. Loreena McKinnett which I bought there too) and la - dee - dah... just happen to look up and there was the Shapeshifter deck. I was like 'OOOooOoOOhhhh FAERY' it wasn't, but it was just as cool ^_^

As of right now, I have 3 decks and my regular playing cards - which gives very accurate results, for me atleast. All seem to work pretty well, just seems like some are easier to read than others.

Personally, if you put effort and thought into the deck, I think if you made it yourself it would work even better. But you really should put your heart into it. Analyze yourself...what symbolizes what for you? Do research on the cards. Match up your personal symbology with the archetypal cards and that sort of thing.

I own a Rider Waite deck (which I'm going to pass on to my sis soon) and my Archeron deck which I LOVE (note: that may be misspelled).

I bought the Celtic Dragon deck. When I saw it I was just like "OMGWOWIWANTIT!" xd Yeah, one will probably just jump out at you, you may just have to search for it.
I personally think that making your own could work better than buying one. I'm working on making my own, but since I have almost zero art skills, I'm making a stick figure one. It's really just kind of a novelty deck for me xd

Yup, Aeclectic Tarot's where I got my deck 3nodding

Personally, I use the 'Manga Tarot' deck . . I feel it had just chose me, not the other way around! Just browse through the website previously stated, maybe by a category that suits you, and let the deck choose you. sweatdrop

I saw that deck tonight, it was very pretty! heart

Yes, my first deck jumped out at my via that website listed. But tonight, man. We went to a bookstore, and both my sister, mum, and I had decks jump out at each of us. Mind you, neither of us can really use them yet! But we got them and plan on studying together. My sister got the Tarot de Paris, my mum a classic Rider-Waite, and I got the Medieval deck. heart

I use the Feng Shui deck mostly because I've got a hard time relaxing when it comes to the Death and Devil card. The readings are a little more positive and I don't have to worry about panicking; I'm quite jumpy as it is.

Just in case anyone is still curious, there's a whole subforum at aeclectic dedicated to making-your-own tarot cards.

And I made my first deck. It's still my favorite. I deliberatly didn't coat or laminate them, so as each card wears out, I have to replace it. Allows me to keep my imagry up to date with my current inner symbology.

I use one of my six decks depending on the situation.

I use my Hansen Roberts deck mostly at school. This deck is small and easily hidden from teachers who would take it away. I also use this deck if I want the answer sugar coated.

My Manga tarot I mostly use at parties and most likely at an anime convention when I go.

My Caglliostro deck I use for family and very close friends. This deck, for some reason, gives me the cold hard truth.

Raider Waite I only use if no other deck has been helpful. This deck has been used the least.

The other two I use just at random whenever the mood strikes me and I don't have a special scenario or situation which needs a specific deck.

One quick word of advice: whether or not a deck jumps out at you, be sure that the cards are not too big for your hands (even on websites, they should have the cards' dimensions listed). If they are too big, you will have a great deal of difficulty working with them.

The first deck I ever got (can't remember what it was called, as I didn't really like it all that much and moved onto a new deck ASAP) was HUGE. The cards were way too big for my li'l hands (and I DO have li'l hands ... and li'l feet ... and a li'l cranium ...). I found it damn near impossible to shuffle the frelling things; I kept dropping them!

Since then, I've made sure that any deck I get is no longer than the span from the center of my palm (per-maybe-haps a bit lower, but not much) to the tip of my middle finger. MUCH easier to handle that way.

make sure they're not too small either... or you miss all the symbolism. My friend bought me a book on Tarot and a deck, but its a mini deck which is just plain ridiculous in terms of use
Any good books for beginners on Tarot that someone could recommend?
