I hadn't even joined band yet, and I was put in Winter Percussion. I'm playing second marimba, and we don't have a marimba yet! crying
But it's on it's way from Texas.

I don't really have any tips. If you're having trouble, ask for help. I figured that out the first week... besides that, just do your best.

Oh.. and our coach told me...
Don't look confused. If you get lost or something, just pretend that you're doing it the right way.

if its ur first time...
figure out the notes FIRST

[the way i learned my music was the way i played it in the shows]

its my 4th year with the mallets.

Ill tell you the hardest thing is to look at your hands, your music, and the director at the same time. Youll get it though.

All I can say to help is learn your music. Memorize it. IT helps. lol and if you lost or dont know a part pretend to play. youll look amazing.

good luck

Start with your dominant hand first(right or left) and KNOW YOUR RYTHMS listen to the rest of the to the flutes your parts should be similar if you know someone that is a flute you may want to compair your parts. don't go on to the next measure if you don't know the one before it. learn it in order and right

My advice:

Don't stress out. Relax!
No matter how had things seem, you'll get it if you practice.
Try to look up and away from the keyboard.
Use wrist movement, not arm movement.
Don't get stuck on one part of the song. If something gets to hard, learn some of it and move on. If not, everyone else will leave you behind, you can always go back an learn it in your spare time.
If you get lost during warm-ups, pick a note (that sounds good with the warm-up!) and play out the rhythem on that note until you can jump back in.
Get into your music! Escpially infront of judges. If its a happy song, look happy. If its a jam-out song, jam-out, if its an intense song, look like you're going to kill someone if you don't get some appluse!
If you're playing four mallets, learn to make tape rings to slip over your fingers during intense practices.
Bring a pair of mallets home and practice on your pillow, even if its just doing steady 16th notes.
Learn streches for your arms and always strech before warming up.
Have fun and keep your spirit up. If everyone does this, it makes everything better.

If you can do all of these, you'll be a great mallet player in no time ^_~
