Lying lazily by a little brooke, a young maluess watched her new 'pet'. As was her habit, she had trapped a little minnow using dams of sticks and dead leaves, and the scaley creature had been so unfortunate as to be caught in the trap. She was too bored to harass it, as was her hobby, and had decided to just watch it swim about, franticly searching for a way out. Some might find this practice cruel, but she never actually injured the creatures she caught; she just bothered them to no end. The thought of Aurora flashed through her mind for a moment. Where was that girl, anyway? She should've been here by now. And what about Oric? Where was he at? Either of the siblings would be good company at the moment, and she really didn't prefer either over the other.

Sticking her paw into the water, she watched the ripples fly out in all directions with not a drop of interest. What was with today, anyway? It was so... boring. A youngster like herself needed some excitement every once and a while. Maybe if her mother had stuck around long enough, she'd have something to do. At the thought of her mother, Starbuck rolled over on her side in annoyance. She didn't want to think of that maluess even for a moment. She didn't want to waste a single moment of her life morning for someone who didn't have the guts to raise her own pup. "I wonder if I have any siblings, Current." She closed her eyes with a sigh, deciding on a nap. Current, as she had come to nickname her god, would watch over her while she snoozed.

The maluess was taking a slow, easy walk around the grounds of the oasis. It was a lazy old day, a day when even the trees themselves seem to sigh and sway uncaringly in the wind. The trees didn't even have the energy nor the motive to stand against even the lightest of breezes, letting their leaves be strewn about by the caress of a breath of wind. The birds were silent, possibly cozy in their nests and ignoring the rest of the world. Even a maluess as she padded and hooved quietly through the grass, or a little malu sleeping beside a brooke, were easily ignored by all.

Midori caught sight of the dozing pup and halted in her tracks. Her scarlet eyes blinked slowly, taking in the sight. It had only been a day since she and Gustave had decided to try for pups, and here was one all alone away from any pack. She looked around for a moment before approaching, when the tiny dam caught her attention. Coming near to it, she took in the structure and the struggling minnow, glanced at the pup, and then dropped in a few stones, sticks and dried leaves to expand the dam. It didn't take long before another minnow was caught and Midori lay down on the bank, not far from the pup, comforted by her own minor success.

With a start, Starbuck woke from an entirely odd dream about the missing Aurora and Oric. She lifted her head with a little sneeze, and blinked slowly to regain conciousness. It took a moment for her mind to register that her prey had a little friend, which was rather perplexing. The dam she had built would've kept any others out, a flaw that she was unsure of how to fix. That's wjem sje scented another malu, and turned her head to only be thrown into the world of the awake far quicker than was natural. Where had that green thing come from? She stood and shook a little, staring hard at the maluess. "Who are you?" Perhaps the statement was a bit rude, but manners had never been her strong point.

ooc same excuse for suckiness post as in the other thread. -__- i'm sorry. hopefully the cold will go away soon.

She didn't mind the rudeness. Midori had put up with quite a few characters in her lifetime, and not always when they were at their best. Once and awhile, one's "best" wasn't much better than how they usually were. Her red eyes had closed wearily in the time it took for the young pup to wake, and when she was addressed, the maluess took her time opening her eyes once again and turning to look at the pup. A single brow arched at the little maluess' tone before she answered, "I'm Midori. And you are?" She didn't take the same tone of voice, but aires of formality were dropped as the pup didn't seem interested in them. The maluess was much more frank and open with the pup while still keeping her thoughts shielded.

"Starbuck." She sniffed, trying to come up with a way to handle this 'situation.' An unknown maluess was in her area, and had obviosley tampered with her dams. Although, to be honest, it was an impressive little edit. Something that she could apparently not do, as it seemed to be able to allow new fish in, as well as keep the old ones from getting out. How it had been built, she couldn't say. Someday, though, she'd get there. Although she was a rude little thing, she was most certainly not a liar, and could give credit where it was due with no problem. "You do that?" Her head tilted towards the dam. "It's a nifty trick."

"Pleasure, Starbuck." She toyed with the idea of standing for a moment, as she was down the bank a bit so she wouldn't seem as if she were upstanding the child nor attempting to intimidate her. Nevertheless, Midori opted for staying as she was. Her eyes moved to the dam as it was referred to before they flashed back towards the dark hued pup. Nodding her head curtly in recognition, she shrugged humbly, "One learns much as an only pup. And it's only a nifty trick if there was something worthwhile to build off of."

Starbuck grinned a little, relating easily to the idea of being an only pup. Of coruse, for all she knew, she ahd siblings. For her purpouses, however, she was alone, and had learned how to entertain herself until Aurora or Oric showed up for some fun. She was growing relaxed in the green maluess's presence, however, and was no longer craving one of the scandal siblings. Lying her body down with a surprising daintiness, she folded her paws and looked on expectantly. "So..." If this Midori character was going to stay here, she could at least help a conversation along, right? "You're an only child?" Best start with common ground, the pup mused, as that was always an easy conversational point. Easy and fast.

Midori watched the pup lower herself down to the earth, a hidden smile lighting her eyes for a moment as she observed the young one's grace. She was adorable, though the maluess knew better than to tell Starbuck such a thing. This was not a pup that would consider it a compliment. When the pup inquired after her childhood, her adulthood even, any trace of a smile faded and her eyes were glassy with indecision for a moment. She looked out towards the bank, unsure how much she could tell the pup. Not because it could be used against her, but simply because she was used to secrets. At last she spoke, nodding, "My father was a rogue, and my mother died before I'd grown. She never had an opportunity to have more pups." She looked back at the pup with a gentle smile, "Growing up alone is something I know very well. And what of yourself, Starbuck? If you don't mind my asking."

"A rogue, huh?" She chewed the thought for a moment, wondering if her mother was living with some rogue right now. She hestitated to tell the story, as very few knew it. It wasn't anything to be proud of, either, and it was far from something to share with those she did not know that well. Midori, however, had an aura about her that was easy to trust, and the current's song was urging her on with a confidence that only her god could give. Looking away, the little pup sighed. "My motheris nothing more than a tramp. I don't know who my father is; he probablly left before I was born. Mommy dearest took off one night without a word at all. For all I know, she's in some rogue's den right now with another litter she can only plan to abandon." Her voice was wrought with a bitter saddness that was far to intense for such a young creature, but she did not shed even a single tear. Her crying had been done that morning when she had found herself abandoned, and she had refused from that point on to miss the maluess for another second of her life.

The green maluess closed her eyes as a gentle breeze wafted past, her ears perking as she caught whispers on it's tendrils. It was her goddess; what was said was a secret that only Starbuck had the right to tell. It wasn't said directly, but over time Midori had learned what the breezes meant. They let her know the dearness of secrets, confirmed her own instincts. Starbucks obviously had moved on for the most part, which was good and part of healing. Speaking of it, however, healed also. Midori was glad she'd been able to share. "Some malu do not truly know the meaning of family, nor what it means to have a pup. For what it's worth, I am sorry that she did such, but you seem to be growing up perfectly well." She smiled softly, observing the pup.

ooc: aahh sorry this took so long. -death- my computer did another memory dump when i was half way through with the reply

The pup gave a small smile to Midori, a rare thing indeed. She liked her quite a bit, and entertained the idea of her being a mother for a moment or so. She wouldn't abandon her brood, Starbuck thought, and she'd care for them with a tender love the pup had never known herself. That would be quite the sight to see, especially if the offspring sported those red eyes. "Thanks. I learned how to do mostly everything pretty fast... I kinda had to. You turned out okay, too." She nodded her head in confirmation that she truely meant it, and then let her attentions turn back to the babbling brooke. The currents had been speaking to her for a few months now, helping her along on the lazy days, and teaching her hw to do what she needed to survive. It must have been the will of the god of currents that she had met the green maluess today, which was pretty amusing, seeing as Starbuck had started life with a large distaste for religon. Back to Midori, however, she was still interested in the idea of motherhood. "Do you have a mate? I was just thinkin' you'd be a pretty good mom and all."

The maluess smile gently, inclining her head towards the pup as her scarlet eyes sparkled with genuine appreciation, "Thanks, Starbuck. Growing up alone is easier with a friend, I still see him frequently. You've friends, I hope?" She watched the pup as she turned back to the brook, her own ears swiveled forward as she listened to it's quiet giggling and chatter. At the question from the pup, Midori nodded and laughed softly, "Thank you very much. I do have a mate, and we're hoping for pups. His name is Gustave, I believe you would like him very much."

"Well, try to find me when you have those pups." She was never one to be fond of little ones, but the idea of seeing how Midori's brood turned out was too exciting to pass up. "I'm sure he's a great guy." At the mentions of friends, however, she suddenly became aware of how far the sun was into the sky. Aurora would be looking for her by now, and Oric would be around somewhere. She should probably tryto go find them, as they might get worried if they thought she was dead or something. "Yeah, I have friends. Two good ones, both of whom I should be looking for." She stood, shaking her little tail in a stretch before taking a slight step away from the green maluess. A wave of manners over took her, and she bowed her head in respect. "It was nice meeting you. Hope to catch you around sometime in the temple, maybe with the little ones."

If Midori had been any other malu, she might've beamed at the little one, but instead she merely smiled gently and glowed a little. It was good to hear kind words from a pup. An adult could compliment her future mothering until their face was blue (or bluer, if that was the case), but a pup's word was law on parenting, generally. Maybe not on discipline, but overall they had a say in things. The green maluess nodded when the pup stood, following her lead and standing as well. She shook her coat slightly before bowing her head to the pup, "It was a pleasure, Starbuck. I will keep an eye out for you. I'd like my pups to have a good influence such as yourself, it would be beneficial for them to meet you. Good luck finding you friends, should you need it."

Oh yeah, Starbuck could deffinatley looking forward to seeing this maluess again. She just oozed all the right stuff. With a light smile, she nodded. "Can't wait to see those pups! You and your mate better get working at it." With that last childish remark, she splashed into the stream to let the fish free before running off down the bank. She was looking forward to telling either of the tan siblings about the green maluess she had come across that day, and was eager to let them know there would be new life in the Temple some day soon. Of course, she was the kind that wouldn't really get overly excited about such things, but these weren't just any pups. They were Midori's pups, and with that thought, she put her mind to the task of trotting without tripping, disappearing into the oasis about her.
