I just really wanted to vent... and just have a shoulder to cry on now, because I am really frusterated...

I'm a serious artist. I'm not just somone who plays with clay because she 'has nothing better to do', nor somone who draws 'because it's a nice distraction'.

I do art because it's my passion. I really don't know quite what drives me, but whatever it is, it's a very strong force. I'm constantly drawing, and trying to push myself further, and get out of my comfort zone. Art is the thing in life which I am most passionate about. It is my love

However, now, with college only a year and a half away, I'm growing apprehensive. I'm worried because I want to go to an art college, and there are to main problems tied to doing that.

The first is that I don't feel I'm good enough. I'm a decent artist... hell, I'm probably among the top five artists in my school, but I still don't think I'm good enough. I'll occassionally take professional art classes outside of school, and as I look at the works of my peers I can see much more skill.... and much more promise.... than what's in my work. I try my hardest, and I do see slow and steady improvement in my work, but I still am not as good as many of my peers.

Another problem is what will become of me after art school. I want to be an artist so badly, but I'm well aware that an $80,000 art degree is more likely to land me a job at Starbucks than it is to get me into a job at a museum, gallery, or teaching facility.

Part of me just wants to give it all up and instead look for somthing more 'useful' to do with my life, but the other part urges me to keep going for my ever-so lofty dream.

Do any of you ever get this whole sense of frustration when it comes to being an artist?

eh, I know how you feel. Maybe make something out of your art.

Like, get a good job, maybe web design or designing whatever. And then you can draw on the side. I know some people have there artwork on the cover of books and they get payed really high. And you get see if you get them in a mag. You get payed for that too.

Well, right now I'm no where near going to college, but I definatly know what you mean. When you're really passionate about something, and little parts of it begin slipping away, it easy to just give up and feel as though it's not worth going after anymore. But then after being frustrated for a while, you realize that that's stupid and then you get really mad at yourself. Just do what you think will help you and your passion for art grow and be reinforced. Good luck!

First of all DO NOT GIVE IT UP! Or I swear I will personally come down there and b***h slap some sense into you.

I feel like that all the time, I always have pencil/ paintbrush, in my hair, behind my ear or in my hand. People tell me I'm good all the time, but I dont see it. My Uncle is becoming an animator, he draws and creates all of his own cartoons, and he is the best atrtist ever. He is my inspiration.

Sometimes I think, if I'm not as good as him what's the point?

The point is that you love what you're doing, and the more you do it the better you'll get.

And you're probably right, an art degree probably wont get you too far. So take something else too, find something that you can do that'll get you a decent job. When you've got a decent income (at least something to live off) then start getting really serious about it all. So then you've got it all to gain. And if your art doesn't get you as far as you'd please, you have your job to fall back on.

But one thing I really cant say enough is just dont give it up, if it's something you love and want to do so much you will so hate yourself if you do...

And I'm sure you'll get where you want to be with your art, one thing I've learnt is that if you try, and keep going at something it'll get you far. : ]

Good luck x

If art is your passion, don't distract yourself. If you are devoted, then your current skill level doesn't matter, trust me. Art is more then techinical. If you feel you are CREATIVE, then push yourself. Skills can be learned with time, that's what college is for, skills, new media, advice, connections. If you pick a good art school, and start working hard on your portfolio, you'll be fine. Maybe go to an open house and see what the professors say about your portfolio (dont worry if they're abit harsh, i thought mine was and he ended up rating my portfolio as "excellent" in my review). I'm a senior in highschool and I'm going to be pursuing a career in Illustration very soon. If you want advice about building your porfolio or anything else, feel free to pm me.

If art is your dream, don't throw it away. But try to find other things you can do to accompany your art like commercial designing or architecture. There are plenty of jobs in the arts field, but you have to be careful, not all of them pay very well and most of them probably aren't what you'll be looking for in your career, so you'll have to look long and hard to find what you want. The same goes for the schools, some schools only offer certain classes and training, and depending on what you're going into and the school you want to go to they might not have it. So be looking hard for what you want and try to expand your field a bit and see what else you're good at. You may find talents you weren't aware you had. That way, if they don't have what you're looking for in a particular section of art, you'll have other options. So experiment a bit a see what you're good at to help with your choices. Good luck. And if you have any questions you can give me a PM. And I'm sure there are others who will be willing to help you to, just ask them for some advice. Good luck in your dream. I have the same dream, so I know what I'm talking about sweetheart!!!

As already stated, don't give up yet! It sounds as if there is some potential in you. I do get frustrated when I realize how bad I am at drawing, and how good all of my friends are, but I continue to do my amateur (SP?) little doodles and drawings in hope that I could eventually draw something worthwhile...

But enough about how bad I am! This is about you! Keep at your dreams!

1 if it's your passion then go for it
2- if you really dont wanna do anything with it then give up
3- make sure you know what you wanna do with your art job wise otherwise you'll end up NO WHERE
4- getting into art college etc is not hard at all you just need to be prepared and and know your stuff(different artists, elements and principals of design, you need to be very opinionated about different peices, know how to analyze and interpret different peices, etc...)
5-if it is really something you want then dont bother questioning it, you know what you want then take it it's there on the table all you need to do it reachover and grab it before someone else does.
6- it doesnt matter what anyone else says in the end it's up to you to get the wheels moving and getting yourself in the right direction that is good for you
