The hymen is a very thin and delicate tissue at the opening of the v****a. Many girls blame pain during sex on their hymen breaking, but that's not usually the reason. Not many people know a whole lot about the hymen. It often does not hurt or bleed when it breaks, so many girls don't even know when it happened. It usually happens long before a girl ever has sex. Fingers and tampons can tear it. It is so thin and delicate that even running and jumping can tear it. So many girls have torn their hymen by the time they reach puberty, although some girls do have a tougher hymen than others. Many people mistakingly think that all girls tear their hymen during sex, so girls with torn hymens aren't virgins. That just isn't the case.
Here is more information on the hymen:

http://www.coolnurse.com/anatomy.htmSo what is the hymen for if it doesn't prove or disprove virginity?
"During the early stages of fetal development there is no opening into the v****a at all. The thin layer of tissue that conceals the v****a at this time usually divides incompletely prior to birth, forming the hymen. The size and shape of this opening (or openings) varies greatly from person to person.
Sometimes this formation of an opening does not occur, resulting in an imperforated hymen (it lacks the more common opening). Some females have no hymen at birth at all, since the tissue divided completely while they were still in the womb."
