three common syntaxes of RPing are:
-mark actions
::walks into the room:: hi guys
-mark speech
hugs the captain "We love you Vomit!!!"
-mark both
::sighs quietly:: "we need more active members!"
" and :: are not the only things to use:
'single quote'
[brackets]
{squigglys}
(parentheses)
-hyphens-
*asterisks*
/slashes/
to break out of character, it is important to include the letters OOC
representing Out Of Character
Edit by Roisu: You can always RP like you're writing a story. For example, "Joe walks into the room, carrying a can of soda and a slice of pizza, 'Hey, there, Bob. Nice party.'"

You make up a character and then pretend to be them. Your character interacts with everyone else's characters. It's like how we all used to play pretend as children, kinda.
I hope that made sense.
