Well, not yet, but sometime towards the end of the school year, I will be auditioning for the fine arts academy for choir in the school I am moving to.

Here's the audition process:

1. Prepare and perform a memorized vocal solo with piano accompaniment. Students need to provide their own accompanist. No cassettes or recorded accompaniment will be allowed. Standard contest literature is desired. Pop or show tunes are not acceptable. Bring three copies of the solo for the selection committee with numbered measures.

2. Sight-sing a short excerpt provided by the selection committee at the audition.

3. Sing one tonal memory pattern provided at the audition.

I don't even know if I can sight sing.. I haven't really tried it before..

and what's a tonal memory pattern?!? 0.o;; I'm so lost!!

I'm totally stressing over it too, 'cause I gotta write an essay and everything and it's like a smaller version of collage or something >.<

but I'm only a sophomore in high school!!

eeeps... >.< help?

that audition process sounds similar to the audition i had to do for the highschool show choir i am in right now (except you dont have to dance and the song selection is different) tonal memory pattern is (i think) when they play a short pattern of notes and then you have to sing they notes while they are playing some harmonies and such. I think it helps them determin if you can sing your part while other parts are being sung.

as for the sight singing. that just takes practice. try finding some vocal pieces you have never heard of, play the first note on the piano, then attempt to sing the notes. then afterwards play the notes on the piano to see how close you are to the actual notes.

just practice and you'll probably do fine. i know it's hard when you have never really sight read before cuz thats what i had to do last year. (i am now a freshman in highschool)

Oh well. I'll probably ask my choir teacher for help after school on tuesday. She's awesome like that.

yeah thats basically what you have to do to be involved in the choral system of my school at all. Some people slip through the cracks on lower level ensembles if they can't but we have to teach ourselfs a part in an SATB piece without any outside help, and then perform that part combined with the one person form the three other vocal parts, and seperatly, as well as sight sing a bit of a piece ( last years audition piece was in latin btw 0.o)

The only reason we have that stuff is because the fine arts kids fundraise like mad honestly. My school district is in the lowest funding bracket in the state of michigan and most of the extra-curric. funding goes to sports crying

I loved the group I was in last year at the middle school here, but I can't wait until semester auditions so I can try to get in one of the upper level emsembles from where I am now. There are so many people in my ensemble now that are there to be there not to work for it, and it's kinda sad I can say my middle school ensemble compleatly dominated my highschool one.

that is kinda sad.. confused I wasn't in chorus in middle school, so I can't say much about that.

in fact, I barely sang any before the mistake in my schedule made me take chorus. now I lurveh it!! :p

I think the administration is psychic 0.o;;

but then again, no I don't, 'cause then they wouldn't cut fine arts.

My old group had alot more way dedicated people. sweatdrop Everyone cried at the end of the year when we had to leave ( including our director who said he was seriously questioning continuing to work there without us). It was like leaving a family for some people. crying

I know what you mean. The other chorus' aren't that tight, but the honors ensemble is so close with each other, it's kinda scary :p

Thats part of why I love choir. It's great when an ensemble gets really tight.

it's really great when you hear the crowd applauding like crazy... and when more people attend the choir performance than the basketball game that night.
