Small paws patted the dusty ground of the pridelands as a cream colored cub raced back to the giant structure of his home, known by others as Priderock. It was a steady thing in his life, always there whenever he looked for it. What kind of life did other lions have, that didn't have the security of those rocks when they needed it?
Bright ruby eyes sparkled in his face as Ushu bounded up the side of his home, something clutched firmly in his jaws. A few feathers fluttered off to land in the dirt behind him, forgotten in his mad rush. Where was Mother? Oh, she'd be so proud of him, he just knew it!
Skidding to a halt before the yawning cave mouth, the cub bounced on his paws, searching frantically for that figure that was even more comforting a sight that great Priderock.

Little pawsteps her hearing had picked up before her son had even reached the entrance of the large cave. The pridelander had been up to nothing again, her thoughts wandering around her mind instead of her doing anything as she had used to, playing by herself and being alone. What ifs had run all over the place, leaving her in the state she was now, weary eyes staring at nothing until the sound in the air had jerked her out.
Smiling, Rehani stood, giving her head the smallest shake to clear it of thoughts of those she had failed. The list... was just too long, anyways. Tilting her head to the side, she awaited the appearance of the cub, chuckling happily at the sight of her son. "What have you there, Ushu?" Her voice was soft and kind, green eyes glittering in the darkness of the cave as she headed towards her little one.

Ushu let out a muffled shout as he caught sight of his mother, bounding eagerly to her. He tried to explain what he had, but his voice got caught in his mouthful of feathers, coming out garbled. Finally, all he could do was drop what he held at her paws, spitting out feathers to clear his mouth.
"Momma! I caught a bird!" He crowed, trembling with his joy and the long run with it in his mouth. "I did it all by myself and everything!" His eyes shown with his excitement. It was his first kill, even if it had all been an accident. This was the first time he'd ever caught the birds he chaised, though he certainly tried hard enough.
It was the cub's greatest wish to catch something and prove himself a hunter, and at long last he had done it! The thought filled him with pride, puffing out his chest as he straightened up. Mother was sure to be proud of him now. After all, he tried so hard because he wanted to make her happy, to see her smile at him.

Rehani bit back giggles at poor Ushu, trying to get her his message through his first kill. "So you did!" She beamed proudly at Ushu, chuckling. "You're gonna be a better hunter than me in no time." Truth be told, Rehani's hunting trips were few and far between. She was not good at it, and didn't really try to pretend to be. Surpassing her skill level would be easily done.
She sat down, watching her little boy happily. "You did a good job. Congratulations!" He was happy, and it was infectious, making her feel better than she had been doing all day.

The bird forgotten as she smiled at him, the cub bounced forward to weave him self between her legs, rubbing her sides against her warm fur. He felt filled to bursting with joy, almost glowing with it.
"You're a great hunter, Mommy! I've seen you, you're good. I want to be just as good as you and Papa and Ukali and Grandpa. I want to grow big and strong, so I can do anything I want to, and hunt for you and protect you and my sisters." He babbled happily as he came to sit between her front paws, eyes closed as he leaned against her leg. The golden cub was tired, though he wouldn't have admited it, and it felt wonderful to just sit here in the safety of his mother, and enjoy his sucess.
