It's an older Studio Ghibli production, released in 1987, about two children who live in Japan during the end of World War Two. I don't want to give too much away if you haven't seen it, but it is an incredibly deep, albeit tragic, story.

It's not something I recommend for heavy rotation, but definitely something that should be seen at least once.

I can't get enough of it. I like them better than actions some times.

You might want to skip this one then. I'm pretty stoic through most movies but this got to me.

Well I actually found out that I had a copy of this one and I actually sat down and watched it just now. To tell the truth, I'm still speechless. The movie wasn't bad. It was fantastic beyond words. It does something which not many feature length anime movies can do, which is touch the audience emotionally. It was truly an experience watching the movie on my small little toaster of a television. The musical score was simple yet it reflected and suited the film so well that though you really didn't notice the score half the time, you were immediately immersed in it when you do.

As I have only seen the film in the English (I'll watch it in Japanese after my birthday this month), I can't judge fully on the voice talent which lent a hand in making this film come to life. But I will admit that it is some of the best voice acting I've heard.

Another factor which amazed me was the flow of the film. The film was not very linear, in which it starts from the beginning and follows to the end. Instead, the film starts from the end of the movie and plays almost like a flash back of the the American air raids on Japan in World War II from the Japanese perspective, specifically through the eyes of a young man named Seita and his little sister Setsuko. In the beginning of the film, Seita is seen lying against a pillar in a train station, dying slowly even at his young age (they don't reveal his age but I'd have to say he was about 13-15 years). A few hours later, the janitor finds him laying on the floor dead. After searching the corpse, he finds an empty can of fruit drops and throws it into the field, fireflies scattering as he does so. Suddenly the scene switches as we see the spirit of the already deceased Seita rise and relive the many weeks leading up to his death. Weeks which reflect not only the happiness of of his life before tragedy, but the love only found in siblings and the responsibility he bears for his little sister Setsuko.

If you haven't picked this film up, you are missing out not only on a great film but a beautiful soul which you find within.

I want to see it, but I don't think I can...I'll probably dehyfrate myself...I don't take a lot of tragedy too well...

It is VERY VERY VEEEEEERRRYYYYY heart wrenching. But its worth watching. Sometimes, its the anime you don't want to see is the best one you ever will see (*cough cough* .hack *cough*)

It was really sad, it almost gave me a breakdown when I read Saikano vol. 5 and then watched this.
