Hero Name: Umbra
Real Name: Damaris Talamántez
Nicknames: Dee or Marí
Former Aliases: Yairé Sandoval
Other Current Aliases: None

Occupation: College Student, then adventurer
Legal Status: Citizen of the USA
Identity: Fairy (unknown to her)
Marital Status: Single
Group Affiliation: None
Base of Operations: Northampton, Massachusetts

Origins: Damaris is born human. Her mutant powers developed in her teens and her fairy powers have been dormant.

Place of Birth: Born in Connecticut, raised in Puerto Rico, currently living in Mass.
Known Relatives: Assumed dead

History:

Somewhere in Massachusetts....

"Just a little longer." The words of an engineer behind an elaborate machine as screams spread through walls and doors of a young girl strapped down to a metallic chair with a strange device over her head. Readings of her heart rate and her brain's pulse continue to raise into dangers bounds. Eventually, it was all in vain as they turn off the machine and examine the girl.

"She fainted again sir, but her vitals are returning to normal." They place the girl on a wheel chair and remove her from the room. In the hallway, the assistant hands the girl in the wheel chair over to another person, dressed more business like and not like a lab attendant. She leaves the facility with the girl.

"Damaris, Damaris wake up." Words continue to flash in and out of her mind, but her eyes flicker to the voice. It's the woman.

"Doctor Mulvaney?"

Doctor Mulvaney is the Damaris' psychiatrist, and only friend. The authorities thought her necessary when they found Damaris in her home crying hysterically. The house was a wreck, as if a battle took place there. Doctor Mulvaney, a specialist that deals with young adults who might be traumatized from mutant related incidents. Nobody knows if Dr. Mulvaney is for or against mutant rights, but her assistance does help her patients a lot so finding out would only tamper with success.

With Damaris, Dr. Mulvaney's theory is that a mutant killed her parents. This theory lacks proof because Damaris seems to have blocked the incident completely from her memories, which is why Damaris goes for treatment that searches for memories of what happened. Due to the severity of the treatment, Damaris only does it twice a year. Anything more frequent might kill her.

Damaris opens her eyes and finds herself in her bedroom at the foster house. "Any luck?"

Damaris, a nice girl who sings beautifully, plays the guitar like a pro and loves to dance, but suffers from nightmares of her mother leaving. A bright young girl, Damaris finds haven in her songs, alongside her guitar. Not many people know she is an orphan, unable to remember what her parents were like.

Damaris remembers a voice singing to her a strange lullaby:

Out in the green realm of beings

I giggle myself away

When enchantment seeks inner me

And it is time to go play

When it is time to go home,

I follow my bread crumbs

Where my mirror wets on high

And my tinker laughs and hums.

To Damaris, it is a song helping her sleep at night; to Phoebe, Damaris' mother, it is a map home. Damaris also remembers another song, which she finds the words to be true in all aspects. "I'd Give My Life for You," from Miss Saigon. She remembers her mother singing that song to her as well. Damaris believes that her mother probably sang it as a message about her death. Finally, Damaris vaguely remembers a story her mother would tell her at night on how a man tried to outwit a fairy and when he finally did, of all the wishes he could have asked, he wished for her to marry him. Damaris looks up at Dr. Mulvaney, hoping to find something new.

"Nothing. But don't worry, we'll find something," said Dr. Mulvaney. "Patience is very important and this is still a new treatment. We do not know what outcomes this may bring." She sees Dr. Mulvaney once a week, sometimes twice a week when she thinks it is necessary. Dr. Mulvaney always helps her out in any situation.

Damaris could have gone to Berkley College of Music, UMASS-Amherst with a full music scholarship, or even to NYU, but that is not what Damaris wants. Unknown to Dr. Mulvaney, Damaris made a friend. Lorilei. She chose to follow her friend to Westfield State College to not be alone for her mind told her that Dr. Mulvaney would not follow her to New York or to Boston. I mean, Damaris is just another patient; it's not like Dr. Mulvaney was her mother to help her out in any way possible.

Once Dr. Mulvaney found out, her reaction seems more to that of jealousy. She might confide certain things to her new friend and not to her. She tries using psychology to manipulate Damaris into not trusting her friend, saying that she will betray her at one point. But Damaris ignored her warnings and goes off. Her continue to take place, but Damaris eventually e-mails Dr. Mulvaney, always trying to postpone her meetings. This upsets Dr. Mulvaney immensely. She decides take matters into her own hands at this point.

College life makes Damaris almost forget about remembering what happened that night. Damaris decides to major in Psychology in order to figure out why her memory is blocked. But her life is not all about her search for what happened. Damaris performs on campus, always blowing people away at the Coffeehouse, always participating at talent shows. She is very well liked and very talented....hard to believe it was not always this way.

Lost memory:

...Eight years ago, somewhere in California....

Damaris' mother, Phoebe, is the fairy in bedtime stories. Joseán, Damaris' father, outwitted her and then asked her to marry him. The problem is that fairies get cold after a while of not visiting the fairy realm. She became impatient and would argue with Joseán about it. Damaris assumed her father was very abusive toward her mom, letting her hatred toward him grow. One day, Damaris threatened him with a knife when she heard something shatter in the kitchen (Phoebe throws a dinner plate at him).

Another issue is that fairies age slowly, almost not noticeable. In the human world, however, they will eventually begin to age and show their true age. Phoebe, being probably close to 100 years old, now looks like she is 30. When she met Joseán, she looked like she was in her early twenties. Next week, the aging might speed up. This is a consequence for staying in a non-fairy world far too long.

"You do not understand, Joseán, I must go. Know it is a concern for my life, not for my pleasure."

"Oh, Phoebe. Do you honestly think I will fall for your tricks? I know you and will not have you abandoning Damaris or me."

"Selfish malevolent eel! May the tides rip away your livings to end all male pride!" She throws a plate at his direction. Joseán ducks out of its way, letting it shatter against the wall. "Can you not see what this world has done to me? Must you condone my heart as you have the rest of me, singing in your cage?"

"What do you mean? Speak straight with me, Phoebe." His eyes follow her to a chair.

"I have aged, Joseán. I cannot continue."

"Don't worry; you can easily be mistaken for a 30-year-old woman."

"There lies the problem. When you first set eyes on me, my blush was that of a possible lady in the twenty rank. Decades later, my skin meets to a rank of thirty."

"But that's great, Phoebe. Anyone would wish to age as slow as you."

"Wrong, Joseán for soon my blush will faint into ashes."

"Huh?"

"Not once you question my age. I am old enough to be twice your grandmother. Fear comes now. This world seeks to end me by age. Who's to say tomorrow I rank in the forties? It's this world, Joseán. It hurts. My must to go is a need for survival; otherwise, I may depart forever before Damaris ranks twenty-five." Phoebe starts to cry.

Phoebe knows what other fairies are like. They are possessive over their own kind and hate the idea of fairies running off with other species, especially inferior ones like humans. Fairies are free creatures that go based on their fun natural instinct, they act and don't think. That is why they enjoy pulling pranks on people. Fairies also do not like the idea of their kind mating with others. The punishment can be death.

Phoebe found the risk of her new life when her brother, Lao, found her.

"She is not my child."

"Lying will not save you from your fate or hers," said Lao.

"No! She is not mine; she has not my eyes!"

"Not now, but soon she will for she is you. She is us and eyes see once they believe. In due time, dear sister; until then, face your fate for your sin. Hers will come thereafter."

Phoebe realizes that if her own brother has no problem bringing consequences to her door, then it was only a matter of time before other fairies would find her and sentence her away. Her argument with Lao becomes a physical combat, leading to a magical one. Phoebe needs to save her daughter.

"This would be too easy, dear sister. I will return when she is remotely close to a challenge that would be worth my time." Phoebe realizes the dangers of her being around her daughter.

One night, Joseán finds a note from Phoebe. She is gone. Phoebe left to save her daughter. She told Joseán to raise her well to make her a good fairy. If tainted, Damaris would become an evil fairy, just like her uncle. The moments of spiritual identity for a fairy may happen at any moment. But when it does happen, it will determine if a fairy is good or evil, regardless of the aftermath. Lao knows it would devastate Phoebe if her daughter becomes evil, so he waits for the right moment to strike, in hopes of it affecting her spiritual identity.

Damaris arrives home and notices something was wrong with her father. She glares at him for a moment, and then notices her mother is not with him.

"Hey dad, where's mom?"

"She's...gone."

"Where did she go?"

"I dunno."

"Okay, when will she be back?"

"She's not."

Damaris thinks he killed her, no doubt about it. This destroys her, making her cry and then lash out at her own father. He was a mutant, but would not hurt her. She is his daughter. At that moment, Damaris' mutant powers manifest and benefit her in her attacking him. Joseán is not prepared for this as Damaris finishes him off, thinking him dead. Finally, she looks around, realizing what just happened. Due to the true nature of the facts, Damaris becomes hysterical.

"This didn't happen! I didn't do it! It's not true!" Still unaware of her fairy traits, her repetiveness almost counts as a spell, blocking out the incident from her mind. The authorities arrive quickly. Lao walks on by.

"Phase one is complete. Attacking her human father has to definitely make her evil. Now, off to deliver a message to her father...That is, before he dies. Then, commence phase two."
