You know, I read a thread in here that discusses different cosplay ideas that were centered around size. It got me thinking... what is so inappropriate about cosplaying as your favorite characters? I mean I adore Integra from Hellsing or Chii from Chobits, Momo Adachi from Peach Girl, and Utena from Utena Revolutionary girl. So... what keeps people from cosplaying as what they want? I broke out google in my quest with keywords such as fat and cosplay. I couldn't believe the nasty things people were saying! These ladies who had put a good deal of effort into making their costumes only to ridiculed. Not to mention all the negative sites that talk about how fat women shouldn't even bother cosplaying at all. Examples of this? How many folks don't know Faye Valentine from cowboy bebop? I personally wouldn't be comfortable showing that much skin but... I think that's a little over the top. I see nothing wrong with the way she looks. I don't even think she's all that big to begin with. Another example Lots of discssion about how fat chicks like to ruin the whole Yuna thing I thought this was pretty well done. This, however, is used to cite how it's ruined. I think she looks fine. I think one thread even talked about a large girl cosplaying as belldandy and instead called her whaledandy. I see absoutely no problem in being belldandy whatsoever, no skin is even shown in that cosplay! So why is it so wrong? I guess as far as discussion, do these kinds of things affect how you cosplay? Do you shy away from many characters that you might want to dress up like simple because of size? Should you shy away from cosplays because of size? In my personal opinion, I don't think anyone should.

Well, the Faye cosplayer looks..well....terrible. Maybe it's just me and neonish colors and material, but yeah, as a fat girl and a fashion girl, I'd ridicule her.
The FF girl just looks tacky. The animated character just looks tacky. confused

Honestly, the Faye one does look bad--but you have to have a very specific body-type to even begin to think about trying to wear Faye's outfit. Hell, it really doesn't even look all that good on Faye. If you must cosplay Faye, please have noticeably large boobs.
Sure, you can cosplay as your favorite characters--but if you do, please try to find one outfit that flatters you. With my figure I'd be more easily able to pull off Chii from Chobits than Ren from Dears--I just don't have the gigantic breasts, full hips and tiny waist for Ren.
I'm sure these girls accepted the fact not everybody would like seeing them in these outfits. If I had the choice, I would rather see some of my friends in the costumes I see cosplayers wear than the people wearing them. A girl with no boobs and hips is just as disturbing to me trying to dress up as a character as a girl who has shape in all the wrong places for that character... if the skinny girl wants to dress up as Ed from Cowboy Bebop, by all means.
Either you have to accept the fact you don't care what others think, so long as you like it... it probably won't look good on you, but most anime outfits don't look good on real people, anyways.... or you need to at least dress up as characters that have similar body shapes.

I would probably never wear something that shows off my mid section. Honestly... I never would want to not even if I were thin. I'd also get a nice supporting bra and or under garment in wearing things with small straps or no straps simply because mine are too large to let flop. There are soooooooooo few very thin women with large honkin boobs, well... at least not naturally, lol.

Because there is such a thing as dressing to flatter yourself and neither of them did.
They look like s**t. The second girls breasts are hanging out with her hips...seriously.

`Interstellar Burst` Because there is such a thing as dressing to flatter yourself and neither of them did. They look like s**t. The second girls breasts are hanging out with her hips...seriously. I agree that she needs to get hersself a better supporting bra but beyond that I see nothing wrong with her outfit. Little more support in the shelf area and I think she would look quite nice. How about the fat chii's or the fat belldandy I talked about or the Sakuras? How about Kagome that's another one I see talked about alot. I guess what upsets me a tad is this... "That said, cosplay is kind of considered to be a bit of a dorky hobby. With the rise in popularity of videogames (mainly RPGS) and anime in America, cosplay-mania has spread here. In some cases, this can be pretty ******** sweet as there are plenty of hot chicks like the one you see below However in most cases some of the results can be disastrous as since cosplay is sort of a dorky hobby you can bet that tons of fat chicks do it as well. It's kinda of sad because Yuna's character is pretty generic but also very hot in her simplicity. We don't know what it is about Yuna that makes her so appealing for fat chicks to dress up as; if fat chicks want to cosplay you'd think the middle Magus Sister would be a much more fitting costume" Maybe I picked a poor example of what I'm trying to talk about. http://www.jasonrivera.com/images/articles/20050216_2_237/coolestkidsever.jpgThat Yuna has the caption "Where's Yuna with this picture, but she's so fat you can't miss her. I guess she's hoping no one will notice she's fat and ugly as long as there's some dork dressed like a Red Mage in the room."

I notice that a lot of the time when people tell girls to find something more "flattering" for their size, it's a thinly veiled way of saying "cover up or gtfo".

Fuzzy Necromancer I notice that a lot of the time when people tell girls to find something more "flattering" for their size, it's a thinly veiled way of saying "cover up or gtfo". Oh well... I don't see a problem, maybe I'm blind. I just hate to think that I'm limited or that anyone should be limited in choice. That I can't cosplay as something considered the slightest bit sexually desirable because I'm fat. That I should cover every inch and cosplay as something that is older, animalistic, or asexual looking. I'd probably not be as daring or show as much skin but I rather like to think I have the prowress to pull off something a little more sexy than kaede from Inuyasha. No mainstream anime character meant to be desirable is going to be drawn heavy. At least not yet. Doesn't mean I or anyone else who's heavy couldn't make it look good and proudly sport said outfit in fandom wink

I personally don't cosplay 'cause it's a bit too dorky for me in general--and I also can't sew.
I dunno, when I imagine bigger girls that do cosplay they usually are the less attractive ones...but maybe I'm just a bad person. But I also typically imagine mostly unattractive, skinny, geek girls cosplaying too... Then you have the few in-betweens who are super-hot and cosplay.
If I say more flattering, I likely mean something that accentuates what they have, and hides what they don't (or do) have. I probably shouldn't wear as tight of T-shirts as I wear, it accentuates my fatroll(s?) on my back... but it also accentuates my boobs because they aren't being hidden under excess material. Half the time I wear a hoodie over it, zipped halfway down, to draw more attention to my breasts and cover up my back loosely.
If a girl has no butt, she shouldn't wear an a**-skirt or hotpants.
It's accepting yourself for who you are and what you have, and dressing appropriately. Otherwise, not caring and dressing how you like, and thinking it's hot sex on you weather or not anybody else agrees.
You don't have to be thin to pull off Faye Valentine, but you have to have larger boobs and if you're going to try wearing those shorts, something of an a**.... so you'll need to have somewhat of a hourglass figure (not even a Jessica Rabbit, painfully obvious one... just a slight one works), maybe a pearshape. I know quite a few skinny girls with naturally large boobs, just like I know some chubby and fat girls with no boobs at all. I personally can't wear most things bra-less, except for a hoodie if I won't be out long... I have a strapless bra just in case I wear things without straps or with thin straps.
And another thought: the guys making these websites and complaining are dorks--they cosplay. Not only that, they make websites...and hateful ones at that. They also probably don't know how to really interact socially with others--which is why they need these conventions to check out "hot" girls and get their jollies, because anywhere else they'd be ignored or ridiculed. Who cares what they think?

I have no idea who any of those ppl are you listed in your repsonse to me so I can't say. All I can tell you is those two girls looked like crap. Especially the first one.
You looked cute in your picture. There is a big difference between telling osmeone to "cover up or GTFO" and thinking that someone should dress to make the most of what they have, skinny or fat. A person can be rail thin and if they don't have tits, wearing a halter top is kind of pointless. If you have rolls...midriff shorts just aren't going to be flattering. But maybe the girl with rolls has great legs and can work a killer skirt.
It goes both ways, skinny and fat.

Like I said maybe I didn't pick the best examples to post. However, my point was it's generally accepted that fat girls should not cosplay and if they do they are to be something far from desirable. It's appropriate to post up the heavy girls and point out that they're heavy and should be shot for even considering trying to break out of the mold of what's expected. Some make poor choices in costuming, but not all of them do. I guess the reason this gets under my skin is reading why people want to join this guild everyday. The number one reason. They want to be in a guild where they aren't ridiculed and can build self esteem. I look at things like this and I start thinking... no wonder. Sure, the creator of that one blog is probably a socially inept moron who can't get laid. It's plastered out there though, thread after thread. Just on what fat girls should or shouldn't be. As for who I was talking about earlier Chii from Chobits Utena and Anshii from Utena Revolutionary Girl Sakura from Naruto

The examples you just gave are all pretty good, the worst is the Sakura cosplay--and it's still nicely done. I honestly feel like I understand what you're going for, myself... it's just like you don't like or understand the response you're recieving. I've not ever been to a convention, I've not ever hung out or gone deep into cos-play culture, but I have never gotten the impression that fatgirls shouldn't cosplay if they can choose a character they can pull off. Skinny girls are the same way, they can't pull off every anime character they try--this isn't limited to just fat girls, it goes to everyone.
If anybody is complaining about those, they're not somebody you need to listen to.
You're going to run into hateful people, not just against fat people, you'll find them when talking about bone-thin people and average weighted people. You seem more fixated on the fact that it's against fat girls, rather than the fact that the women are wearing something unflattering and as such being ridiculed for it by some immature assholes. So what if it's online? You can find ridicule of almost anybody on here, if you look for it. I know Cosplayers who look forward to seeing girls cosplay, but I don't hear them complain about fat-girls or skinny girls in flattering outfits... They complain about unattractive girls or girls who could be perfectly fine if they just accepted what they can and cannot wear and played up their best features.
My friends tell me all the time "You're so cute. I wish I could dress cute." they accept the fact their looks don't play well into cute, and they don't try it so much... although I honestly think if they'd allow me to take them shopping they'd see they're wrong, they just have to find the right way to play up their cute-ness.
What I run into a lot is plus-sized people get so focused on only seeing ridicule against themselves. People in general think they're the only ones out there with problems--the grass is always greener on the other side. We're told every day in every way by the media we're not pretty unless we fit into a specific mold that the vast majority of the world doesn't and will never fit into, weather or not we're fat, skinny, young, old, purple, blue or green.
