Has anyone read Laurell's newest blog update? Here it is in case you haven't... LKH BlogSo... what do we think? Personally, I'm still going to read the books, but I agree with this particular sentiment... Crazy screechy monkeys

It's really sad that some people can't relate to the characters and are asking Hamilton to kill them off. That's really sad and I pity them.

Oh FSM, that was funny. The crazy screechy monkey article, I mean.
I can understand being angry at negative readers. No one likes it when people ask for characters to be killed off. Authors can become attached to their characters, and besides that, they put a lot of effort into writing their books.
That being said...
Probably not the best way to handle the situation. If you say, "I'm happy for you," to the people who hate your stuff, then continue to talk about those people for an entire entry it looks more like you're... well, poking angry monkeys with sticks. And when you react to their negativity with even more negativity--"Put my books away with other things that frighten and confuse or just piss you off"--then not only are you surrounded by angry monkeys, but also, nobody pities you.
(By "you," I mean "if a person were to..." or something like that. Not "you," as in the original poster. xD Just incase that was confusing.) (You know, I'm likin' this angry monkey analogy.) (Sorry if this makes no sense. I am sleepy, and just took sleepy pills.)

No worries, I think in my sleep deprived state, you post makes a sort of sense...
But yeah. Her blog really annoyed me. Because I agree to an extent with the "Negative Reader." Not on the killing part, but she needs to make her writing a little more concise than an entire book devoted to sex and emotional luggage. These are both very nice things to have in a book, but if it makes up the entirety of it, then you have some issues and a glaring need for an editor that will smack you in the head with the manuscript and tell you to write a plot.
It was like she grouped everyone who was disappointed in her recent works into the category of psycho flamer retard, and told them in no uncertain terms to just leave. So, not thrilled with LKH on that point either. Besides when she thought that poking crazy screechy monkeys on a public blog was an awesome idea. xp

I think as an author Laurell has the right to go on her own blog and tell the detractors they're being silly and illogical. I don't think it's in her best interests per say and I don't think it makes her an asstard but I think she does have a right. If she's as close to her characters as she claims she almost has to make a post denouncing her negative reader fanbase as she sees Anita and company as real. I can't say I know exactly how she feels about buying gifts for imaginary characters (I have nearly bought gifts for people who've departed this world though so I can relate somewhat) and to ask someone to kill what she considers a close friend is silly but I think she wrote too emotionally and didn't step outside herself enough. Her post is somewhat silly and asks a lot of the reader. I think had she waited and made her post a little more objective and consise it would have served her better.

But she has a point. If people don't like what she's writing, they can stop. No one's holding a gun to their heads and pulling the trigger on them if they don't. (no pun intended)

What makes me angry is how some people complain about the books, going so far as to even say that they are going to stop reading them, and then the very next book they are complaining yet again. If they still have things to complain about, then they obviously haven't stopped reading the books and perhaps just like to hear their own voices. That said, I think LKH has the right to be upset when fans suggest their own opinions (whether on characters, plot, or anything really) as what should actually happen. Anita Blake is LKH's world and people are either along for the ride or they are not. Truthfully, I was happy that she stood up and said something. Maybe she didn't handle it in the best possible way... but just the same, if the fans are entitled to b***h about things then so is she. It's a two way street.

I love the books because it provides challenges. News ones and old ones. Hell the RIchard issue and Arduer issue hasn't been resolved. My theory is it all comes down to a final battle with Marme! All these challenges prepares Anita for when she goes up against the Mother of Darkness!

"There are books that don't make you think that hard. Books that don't push you past that comfortable envelope of the mundane. If you want to be comforted, don't read my books. They aren't comfortable books. They are books that push my character and me to the edge and beyond of our comfort zones. If that's not want you want, then stop reading. Put my books away with other things that frighten and confuse or just piss you off."
First off: Her books aren't that hard to read. Oh look, she's got his d**k in her mouth...again. How stimulating. If she's talking about the fact that there are more than one partners, big deal. If that's past the comfort zone for her, than she really has been sheltered. stare
"They push my character and me to the edge and beyond of our comfort zones."
Probably with the guy on guy stuff, but other than that, it just seems she's pushing them both towards orgasms. (If that's outside her comfort zone..well, they have doctors I'm sure her husband could see.)
"The arduer is a pain in my, and Anita's butt, too. But I believe in my world. I've done this major metaphysical event. I won't just 'fix it' because it's hard to write around."
That's great. I realize that it's a power and a pain, but there gets to be a point where it's too much, and really tiresome to read about. She certainly could make the scenes less graphic, or shorter or something. It seems to me that she's not trying so hard, but that's my opinion.
"As for the people who keep suggesting that I simply start killing characters because Anita has too many men in her life..."
I was actually glad to read this, because I was terrified that she was going to kill some off. I love the characters, they're the reason why I still read the books is because of my love for them. I may not be all that happy with the books because it seems with all the sex, it takes away from the actual knowing the characters...Unless we're hearing about how wide Micah is.
Other than that, by what she's told us, I'm really looking forward to Harlequin, because I'm hoping to God that Edward saves it.
I don't care if Anita has sex with 10 guys. I don't care if she has sex with all of them at once.
I just want to know them.
I read books to fall in love with the characters, to know them and to see them be brought to life. It just seems, with her attention to...detail...she seems to be missing other things that she starts...but never finishes or touches again.
Like Wicked Truth. Great characters, I love them, I just want to know more about them to love them more.
When asked when we'd learn more about Wicked Truth, Laurell K. preceded to say that the dance card was full and Anita couldn't handle many more.
I'd rather they not sleep with her, but I don't really care. I just want to know more about them.
I'm looking forward to learning more about Sam, and how Richard's development is coming along, and especially about Peter (don't care much for his mother, Edward can do better...Yes, I am a fangirl, I admit it). I'm wanting to know more about The Mother.
The fact that her powers are growing makes me excited too. Maybe that means we'll get to see more..exploding type action.
I don't hate the books (I'm not a big Anita fan, but...), I just have higher expectations for them.
I mean, is that so bad?
Considering that I've filled 2/3 slots for being a Negative Reader, guess that makes me one.

I'll go with that. I love Edward and I'm looking foreward to seeing him again. Wicked and Truth were interesting vampires. I'm a little more curious about them. But who knows? LKH devoted a book entirely on Anita and Micah. Maybe she'll do the same for Edward and Wicked Truth? We don't know.
