This morning I was talking to one of my japanese teachers, and he happened to bring up the subject of food in Japan. Apparently there are barely any vegtables for sale there. The most you could find is maybe a few onions here or there. Also, produce is extremely expensive. A small thing of grapes cost nearly $35. There is also close to no dairy products, no yogurt, cheese, etc. All cheese is replaced with tofu. Beef and Pork are quite hard to find as well. The country lives off of sea food. At Mc'Donalds you won't find regular hamburgers, you'll find shrimp-burgers! gonk
I personally love the food of the sea and assumed that a majority of Japanese food was in fact seafood, but this still comes as a total shock to me. Am I the only one? sweatdrop

lolwtf, that's totally untrue.
you can get all vegetables here, most you can think of and more, and they're CHEAP. like rlycheap. fruit too, you can buy a great bunch of bananas for 99yen at one of my local stores. and all very good quality.
meat is expensive, though. and mince is never really beef, it's always combined with some other meat. but you can get most meat, except lamb.
there's plenty of dairy products, I personally love strawberry milk and there's yoghurts too, especially lots of ones for babies. butter is kinda scarce, and expensive, because it's not used often, margarine is cheaper and more easily available.
there's regular cheese too, lol XD
and mcdonalds has the same stuff as any other country, they just have shrimp and tofu burgers too. and mcdonalds is hella better quality that the ones in the UK, I usually hate mcdonalds, but japanese one is yummy. there's kfc, mr doughnut, panda express, etc too, and all better than the western version I'm sure. there's also wa~y too much yummy junk food. D; and harajuku has tons of stalls selling delicious crepes filled with random stuff + cream.
mmm I'd say fish isn't really the main food, but rice. rice/noodles, then veg/fruit/etc, then meat, then fish. because that goes in order of price. meat and fish is expensive, in my flat we eat meat maybe 2, 3 times a week, fish hardly ever because it's so expensive D; Meat is about the same, but seems to go on sale more often lol.
I'm sure families eat differently, but I think young people living on their own eat similar to me & my friends.

It's one of those "oh yeah, that's cool" moments when in your head your thinking "what the...?!? Shrimp burger! What!!" gonk
But I have to say as an American that I give Japan kudos for not having completely fattening fast food. ^^

They just happen to have shrimp and tofu as well as regular hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries etc. They dont even sell diet coke, only regular coke. JAPAN HAS A LOT(!!) OF FATTENING FOOD, SRSLY, TOO MUCH OF IT. it just happens to be better quality than the fast food in the west.

I was chilling out in Japan this summer and I saw a Taco Bell. But maybe that was because I was in Chiba (near Tokyo). They mostly eat veggies, rice (gotta love it), and some fish and meat. They have fruit but don't eat it as often. And I have to say, the greatest things there are the crepes at harajuku and the cakes. *drools*

That's news to me, although I've never been to chiba. I live in kanagawa, so I only really go to tokyo. The way I see it is that besides rice, people eat more of what is cheaper. Cos stuff like curry is pretty much the cheapest meal, you don't even have to put meat in it to taste good. Just curry, potatoes and carrots will do, and well in my flat we eat it with rice too dunno bout everyone else. Also even though fruit is not expensive, people tend to eat it as a snack. Meat and fish, you know it's the same in every country I think, you eat it when you can afford it! Don't you think japanese versions of western fast food chains are so much better? I heard KFC's chickens are proper ones and not the freaky genetically modified ones you get in the west. I dunno if it's true though, I doubt it. Mcdonalds and KFC definitely tatse better here though. I have to agree about the crepes and cakes! I have eaten so much melon pan and cheesecake since I got here, I really need to go on a diet lol.

I kind of had to be careful spending my money... I only had 100 Yen left on me when I came home sweatdrop . But I did find a place here in Montreal that sell those type of crapes whee they are soooo good! To bad it's at La Ronde (amusement park - $30 entrance fee... for crapes xd ) I also heard that the milk there isn't processed the same way as they do here. My cousin's friend got sick from drinking the milk there. My cousin, and I never drank milk in Japan because of that. Also apparently the Fish section in the grocery stores is like the meat section here with a small section of meat. Also I found a Subways, I asked for a Terkiyaki Chicken Sub. It was good, but different than the ones here (More athentic in Japan wink )

I have milk every day in my cocoa and never got sick from it. milk is actually processed more thoroughly here, which makes a difference when it's soy milk. Soy milk outside asia tends to be bad for you if you have it every day.

I'm sure families eat differently, but I think young people living on their own eat similar to me & my friends. If the fruit in Japan is cheaper than where you're from I don't want to know about it. I was shocked at prices for fruit in Japan, a single apple there cost as much as kilo of apples in the grocery stores here in the Netherlands. Not to mention the fact that Japanese have a habit of stocking unripe fruit in the grocery stores, apparently they prefer their pears not juicy and sweet, I asked a Japanese friend about it and she commented that the fruit looks better that way as ripe fruit is often a bit bruised. Some vegetables were cheap, mainly cabbage and onions but sweet peppers were insanely expensive, lettuce was pretty expensive too and didn't look too good most of the time. Meat wasn't that expensive where I lived, not much more expensive than it is here and fish was typically more expensive than meat. Besides, I always used to go to the grocery store in the evening and get the meat for half price because it was the last day they could sell, so I just stocked up and put it in the freezer. razz
