Hi hi like the topic says I'm new to FFXI and right now kinda mad that the thing came with no manual so I don't know my left from right. Yet I somehow made it to a level 6 BLM. (Going summoner or something else I don't really know my options or what I want.) I play on Asura but you don't need to be on the same server to lend a helping hand. sweatdrop

I'd be worried if I didn't figure out how to. xp

I started on Windurst I think it's called.
PostPosted: Fri Jan 05, 2007 2:09 pm

'kay well. In the opening scene, you should have seen a map open up with a marker telling you to go to someone with an adventurer's coupon.

Do you remember if you started in Windurst Woods or Port Windurst?

(Unfortunately for me, I'm not windurstian. XD From Bastok, I am. But I can help you around regardless. smile )

EDIT: Oh, to open the map, type /map. XD

Or... you can open the menu. I guess a good place to start would beee: PS2, PC, or XBOX360?

Well, in that case, you know how to trade, too. razz And use the map.

So that's more than you told me you knew! Fibber! sad

Do you know how to open the menu?

After a hour of trying everything I pressed the mouse wheel and that opened it up.

basically for navigating, most of the buttons you need are on the number pad. Pressing - (the minus sign) will bring up the main menu (press it twice for the second menu), pressing * will make you kneel down to rest, and pressing slash will toggle between defaulting walk and run. 8,4,6,2 are for walking around, 5 will toggle the camera between 3rd and 1st person and vice versa. The other arrow keys (the ones below home/end etcetc) will rotate the camera.

F7, F8 and F9 are the three different targeting buttons (yourself, PCs, NPCs)

Ctrl/Alt plus a number is used for macros
(you can set macros by picking the macros option which is on the second main menu I think (press - twice). Macros are written in a bit of a weird style but you'll get the hang of it if you haven't already - when you want to learn about them you can ask again smile )

Bascially i never use the mouse to play - its all doable from the keyboard

I already know how to walk I said that. sweatdrop

It's more I don't really understand more about classes, fishing, making items, and everything else.

Sorry I wasn't more clear on that. sweatdrop

I'm sorry I didn't mean to be simplistic, I was responding to what you said above by giving you the keyboard equivalents, and I mentioned the buttons for walking only for the sake of completeness. I do realise you probably would not have been able to get to lvl8 without being able to move xD

There's a lot lot to learn about the game ffxi - its difficult for us to tell you "everything" all at once razz Do you have anything specific you would like to know about? For example the basics of partying (most people start pting between lvls10 to 15), how macros work, the different places you can go to for most effective exp, the best way to make use of the auction house, finding a linkshell.

19A25
about classes

ok I'll give you a very simple run down on this.

In ffxi as with most games the different jobs can be divided very loosely into 3 or 4 categories:
tanks, healers, damage doers and support

as you lvl up your job roles can change, for example a red mage starts off as a cross between a damage doer and a healer (they have both black and white magic and can melee ok), but by lvl41 is mostly desired as a support class (they are expected to debuff the mob -poison, blind, paralyze etc- and buff the party -refresh, haste etc-).

Here's the low down on the 5 starting jobs:
Monk - A Melee DD class. At lower lvls (i.e. 10-25) it can tank (because it has high hp) but is more likely to backing up a main tank then tanking solo.

Warrior - A Melee DD class. At lower lvls (i.e. 10-30) it is usually played as a tank, but beyond 30 it is considered a DD class.

White Mage - A Healer. Pretty obvious sweatdrop

Black Mage - Nuker DD, plain and simple^^

Red Mage - As I have mentioned its a it of a hybrid, it can backup cure, backup nuke and even melee. Eventually becomes a support class.

Thief - Another Melee DD ^.^; becomes most effective at lvl15 with access to Sneak Attack for added damage, and works in collaboration with the tank at lvl30 because it has the ability to 'place hate' (i.e. make the monster hit the tank) using Sneak Attack+Trick Attack. Having a thf in your pt can increase the chance of getting rare drops.

~*~*~*~

Once you reach lvl30 you can complete quests which give you access to Advanced Jobs:

Bard - Ultimate Support class surprised
BeastMaster - usually played as a solo job, and very rarely parties. Has the ability to Charm monsters and make them fight.
Dark Knight - a Melee DD with access to a limited amount of Black Magic
Dragoon - a melee DD who has a companion wyvern to help fight
Ninja - one of the two major tanking classes, it specializes in evasion of monster attacks. It is also a powerful DD.
Paladin - the other of the major tanks, it has high physical defence and access to a limited amount of white magic so it can cure itself and others.
Ranger - A DD class specialising in ranged attacks (duh >.<)
Samurai - A DD class specialising in tp and weapon skills, can possibly be considered a support class since their ability to use weapon skills more often than any one else facilitates heavier damage doers (i.e. the black mage) to really do their thing. (See more about Skill Chains and Magic Bursts)
Summoner - another kinda hybrid, very useful as it can heal, nuke, buff and debuff using the various abilities (blood pacts) of its summoned monsters.

Blue Mage, Corsair, Puppetmaster are from the Aht Urgan expansion pack and I am unable to comment on them since I quit the game before they really starting being used in pts ^.^;

Well right now I'm interested in finding a good place to level a BLM cause I just got to 7 and now all the exp is 40 and some 50. I would like a linkshell cause I'm not that great at talking and meeting people so I'd need a perma party. I think I found out how to use the auction house but not sure cause I did get my blind and bind there for 100. So far thats all I really need for now.

Edit: Also if this helps I do plan on becoming summoner and yes I do know how much of a pain it's gonna be to get all those summons and such.

Unfortunately you just hit the worst stage in lvling for like - the whole game X.x; Lvls 7-10 are slow and crummy. If you can find a friendly person to duo with it might go a little faster (or you might die a lot more xD depending on how it goes xD). I reckon the best way to do these lvls is to farm at the same time, then you'll be happy with all gil you're making and forget about the exp until you ding razz Good things to farm around Windy are Yagudo Necklaces (from Yagudo) and Silk Thread (from Crawlers).

If you're feeling adventerous you can try and solo in Tahrongi Canyon (the entrance is in the North East corner of East Sarutabaruta) but be careful if you go too far north and out of the canyon because some of the goblins out there are mean mean mean.

As I said before most people start pting between lvls10 to 15 in the Valkrum Dunes (or in Bubu Peninsula if they're smart, which they're usually not) so the exp gets "better" but the nightmare of the Dunes begins xD

Static parties are useful, but its equally important that you learn to play with a variety of different party setups, especially if this is your first character.

Getting into a good social linkshell is unfortunately a matter of luck. If you party with some nice people in the dunes someone may offer you a shell, or you may hear people shouting in town that they're looking for new members. Most people eventually stumble across a linkshell in one way or another razz Players in ffxi tend to be, on the most part, a friendly obliging bunch (compared to most games anyway), so you're bound to run into a nice person eventually razz
Alternatively you can look on the internet - the website www.killingifrit.com has a list of linkshells for each server many of whom have their own websites and forums. If you see one you like you can request a pearl.

It may be a pain but its totally worth it - smns are leet 3nodding
