Fae was sprawled along the lower branch of a tree, one paw dangling idly to and fro as it hung off the side. Time like those, with the noon sun blazing down from above, made the cub that much more grateful for the shade her perch granted her. The babble of a river echoed close by... but after yet another failed fishing attempt, she wasn't all together sure if it was soothing or agitating. (Maybe both.)

Relishing in his newer, more powerful form, Hinhallow strode toward the deeper curve of the river, head held high. He shook out his mane, striding into the chest-deep swell of water before he gave a roar. It was a loud call, one to let the occupents of the river know who it was that strode so boldly into their world. A rainbow of fish exploded out of hiding, some darting up from the deeper water, other the grass that grew in the shallows of the other side of the river, still others darting out of crevaces in the rock. They swirled about his coat of ivory and snow, a rainbow of scales and a caroling of voices. They greeted the DreamWeaver with the voices of friends, asking him how he had been, and where, since it had been so long since last they saw him. "Hello my friends." He rumbled, smiling. "It is, good to be back.. As for me.. I've been wandering."

The sudden bellow of an unfamiliar roar was nearly enough to send the (easily) startled cub plummeting straight from her perch, fur standing on end as her claws scrabbled frantically for purchase. Eyes wide, Fae sought out the source of the sound.
... only to catch sight of an odd, but striking nonetheless, sight, not so far from her hideaway amongst the leaves. A light-coated lion standing in the river, surrounded by countless numbers of... were those fish? What in the world? She tilted her head to a side, for once allowing her fears to dull in place in sheer curiousity. How was he doing that? And so many different kinds; she didn't think she'd even seen a good half of those fish crowded around him before!
'If only I could do something like that..., ' she thought to herself, ears twitching back for a moment. But then, the way he was talking, it didn't really look as though he was out to catch any of them.
Definately not something you saw eveey day. Curious as she was, though, she wasn't about to budge from her branch just yet. He might have been kind to the fish, but... even if no one had done wrong by her yet since she'd found her way to Niobe, better safe than sorry.

Hinhallow chuckled at something one of his friends said, and that chuckle turned into a true laugh. Throwing his head back and letting his joy ring out into the air, he paused as he noticed a delicate female hidden in the branches of a nearby tree. His laughter stopped, and he turned his attention to her, wondering if he had fritghtened the lass. Murmuring something to the swirl of scales about him, he paced towards her. Unsurprisingly, the fish followed him, darting around as though he were part of their school, chattering and gossiping and murmuring among themselves as much as speaking to the great lion in their midst. When he stood close enough to talk softly and still be heard, Hinhallow stopped. "Hello." He rumbled gently, a kind smile curving across his maw. "I am sorry if I frightened you, my name is Hinhallow and I used to come here a lot as a cub.. I just wanted to visit with my friends." He gestured to the shimmering sea of fish with one soaked forepaw.

Fae watched on, briefly perplexed by the lion's burst of laughter. Perhaps all those fish swimming like that were tickling him? Yes, that had to be it. It made the most sense. After all, what else could it have been? (If only she knew.)
She froze as his gaze fell on her, ears back and almost instinctively hunching lower to the branch when he began to move in her direction. Even then, she couldn't help but be baffled as the fish trailed right along with him. It was almost funny -- or would have been if the cub's typical nerves when it came to strangers hadn't begun to kick in.
Fortunately, it didn't last long. Not in the face of such a soft voice and a kind-hearted smile to match. Some of the cub's tension eased away, offering him a small (though sweet) smile in return, nodding a greeting to him. Hinhallow; she'd be sure to remember that.
A touch of curiousity returned to her dark eyes as he gestured to the plethora of fish gathered around him. So he'd come here often when he was younger. That might explain why they crowded around him like that. Maybe. Could fish really recognize someone on sight like that...? Then again, they sure seemed to recognize her paws well enough every time she tried for them.

Hinhallow grinned widely at her smile. "May I ask your name?" One of the fish mad a joke at the white lion's expense, and he dunked his head under the water, snapping at th great blue and gold male playfully. The fish laughed, swatting at the lion's nose with his tail and darted away. Pulling his head out of the water, Hinhallow shook the water from his face and smiled. "Sorry.. He said something I didn't like.. They're, comedians." He rolled his eyes.

Fae lowered her head almost sheepishly. The matter of her name always did come up. It was a natural question, after all. She wasn't embarassed by her own silence, but moreso by the awkwardness that tended to follow. She mouthed a silent apology, giving a light shrug of her shoulders and another small smile to go along with it.
Her brows lifted with mild surprise as Hinhallow suddenly ducked beneath the water, almost thinking that maybe he'd decided to go in for a bit of fishing after all. The comment he made when he emerged, however, left the cub more confused than ever (and it showed). 'Wait, what? Said? Comedian?'

Her thoughts exploded across his mind like a star and he stood, blinking his eyes wide as he tried to recover from the shock of hearing her mind. "I- I am sorry.. You don't speak?" He shook his head slightly. "Yes, the great River's King is a joker through and through.. And pays no mind to the cloud that wades among his folk, for if I truly wished to fish, I could not catch them even though they so trust me." Hinhallow wrinkled his nose and rolled his eyes, a smile overtaking his face, rather than the playful frown he had. 'Is it better, if I talk to you like this?' He asked silently.

Blissfully unaware of how 'loud' she'd been, Fae simply nodded and gave a small shrug of her shoulders. Her own wordless way of saying 'don't worry about it, no apology needed'.
Her head tilted to a side again, brow furrowed and silent question dancing in her eyes. The way he was going on about the fish, it was almost as though -- but that couldn't possibly be it. Could it? The cub couldn't help but feel a tiny bit relieved when he admitted he wasn't much of a fisher himself in spite of his advantage. Her grin broadened just slightly. If that was true, at least she wasn't the only one.
Wait. But how had he known she was thinking that? Though it was the logical conclusion to come to...
But there was nothing logical about Hinhallow's voice echoing through her mind, clear as a bell. And this time, Fae really did fall out of the tree.

Hinhallow winced as she tumbled out of the tree, worried he had scared her to death. Pacing forward slowly in the water, he wondered if she had suffered any injuries from her rough landing. "Lady?" He prodded aloud, gently. "I did not mean to frighten you.. I am sorry.. My abilities.. They are a gift from birth, I thought perhaps I would be able to speak to you..." He hung his head, ashamed he had startled her so. The fish parted ways, going back to their normal pursuits with a last kind word. They knew Hinhallow would be interested talking to the newcommer, and would claim his attention again later.

'Ooohf... ' The cub pulled herself slowly back to her paws, shaking herself out. A few sore spots here and there, a chance of a bruise or two the next day. But nothing she couldn't walk away from. And she'd walked away from far worse in her lifetime.
She hadn't been frightened by it persay, more surprised than anything else. However, she was a nervous, flinchy cub by nature. It was her own bad luck at work that she happened to be in a high place at the time.
Fae glanced up at Hinhallow as he spoke up, shrinking onto herself as he hung his head. Now she'd made him feel badly...
Plucking up her courage, she crept tentatively forward to give his foreleg a gentle little nudge with her nose before offering him an apologetic smile. 'Don't be sad, or sorry. Please?'
Fae didn't really understand how all these abilities of his worked, much less how to 'speak' back to him. (Or that she might have been doing it already.) It was unlike anything she'd encountered before. But if he could speak in her mind like that -- had he done the same thing with the fish? That would certainly explain a few things.

Hinhallow smiled, glad she seemed unhurt and that she did not blame him. He really hadn't meant to startle her, merely reached out unthinking.. Too late he remembered he had never revealed his ability to one of his own kind. If you are not hurt.. Then I am not sad.. But I am sorry for startling you... He offered with a grin.

'It's alright.' Was that the right way to do it, then? It seemed as though it might well be.
Fae's tentative little smile lingered, though she herself backed up a short ways. No matter how she may have improved under Niobe's care, there were some habits that hadn't broken (and quite possibly never would). The way she carried herself was one of them, even with her initial fears set at ease. Shrinking low to the ground, tail curled around her -- from cub born small to begin with, it was almost as though she was making an effort to dissapear completely. 'I've just never seen anything like it before, that's all. Really, it's incredible.'
She scuffled from one paw to the next, the tiniest inkling of nerves creeping back into her mind. The cub hadn't spoken to anyone for a long while now, by any means. It wasn't a matter now of how to speak, but how to say it. It was almost exciting, and a bit terrifying all at the same time. The last time...
But this was different. It wasn't speaking with her voice. That should be alright, shouldn't it?

Hinhallow nodded, severely confused at the waves of fear he could feel rolling off of her. Her every thought was nearly paralized with it. Someone had hurt her long ago.. For speaking? He shook his head. It's not so incredible... He huffed, clearly embarrassed.
