You'll be fine; flying really isn't that bad, assuming you don't get airsick or anything. Fastest way to get around. ^^

I fly a few times a year, and although I get a little impatient with all the crowds ('m not good with crowds), I still get as excited at takeoff as I did my very first time flying.

Things to remember when flying:

Don't bring any liquid or gel onto the plane. Put all your grooming supplies into the bags that will be checked, except for your necessary medicines. For those, you'll have to explain to airport security that you have a doctor's note (get one of those!), but then they'll usually let you keep it if you can explain adequately that you require it and can't risk that it could get lost in transit.

You'll need to remove your shoes as part of the security checks, so wear shoes you can don and doff easily. I've been searched so often and so extensively that I just make it a practice to only wear clothes that I can pull on and off swiftly. Don't worry about that -- they'll take you into a room with security officers that are the same gender as you, and if you're a minor, they'll let your same-sex parent in there with you.

If there is anything remotely 'wrong' with you (like you've had a recent surgery, are elderly, or whatever), ask for a wheelchair and someone to wheel you around. It's easier than hobbling in between one gate and the next.

Even if you don't normally keep kosher, order a kosher meal if you're going on a meal flight. If they misplace it or get it wrong, they'll usually apologize by giving you a travel voucher. At least, they do on American Airlines. United doesn't ever apologize for anything, in my experience.

Bring protein bars, fruit, or some other form of snack just in case they do lose your kosher meal order, especially if you're diabetic or hypoglycemic. Just don't bring anything liquid. They'll always give you water, and the water is kosher.

Bring your siddur in your carry-on bag, even if you're not supposed to fly during prayer time. Flights can be rescheduled, and you could find yourself in the air during time for shacharit or mincha/maariv.

If you're travelling on a Friday or the day before yom tov, plan for problems that will delay your landing by sundown. They always happen. Check your route to see where your plane will stop at each of the layovers, and look online for kosher restaurants, hotels, or perhaps a Chabad house -- anywhere that you could get emergency accommodations and food over Shabbat, if you're obliged to stay overnight instead of continuing towards your destination. It also doesn't hurt to bring along a small bottle of kosher grape juice, a baggie of mini-challah rolls or matzah crackers, and a travel Shabbat kit (except matches and lighters, which you can buy in the airport or hotel at your layover stop).

Those neck pillows that are shaped a bit like a C or letter chaf? Get one, if you don't have one already, and if you'll be in the air for more than about 3 hours. They're wonderful.

Drink a lot of water. Airplane air is very dehydrating. Dehydration is essentially the same as a hangover, minus the fun of drinking the night before -- headache, nausea, sometimes vomiting or diarrhea. Drink a lot more than you normally would drink, and make sure it's a drink without caffeine or sugar in it. Water's best, but in a pinch, even milk, fruit juice, or decaf coffee is fine.

Bring a sweater or coat on the plane. They keep airplanes kind of chilly. While most airplines do provide a blanket if you ask, they often run out of them.

Great tips! biggrin

I also would like to add that they sometimes temporarily lose luggage, so have a carry on with a change of clothes and basic stuff. blaugh

OH YAY! Have lots of fun!

I've never been on a cruise before, so I can't tell you what to expect, but everyone I know that's been on one says it's awesomtastic.

Riding in an airplane is fun. Take-offs and landings are the best. whee

crying Oh, yes... I know that feeling... This past summer on my way to Orlando, the plane had to circle around the airport for an extra hour due to a tropical storm. It sucked. My mom and I were getting sick, and the worst thing is, THEY WERE NOT GOING TO SERVE ANYMORE REFRESHMENTS... It was terrible...

Oy, that's horrible! I've had two similar experiences, and I hope none of you good folks ever has to put up with them.

When I was moving to the city where I currently live, my plane couldn't get cleared for landing. We were in the air an extra SIX HOURS, just circling around, and they'd run out of all refreshments entirely. There was this little boy sitting behind me who was fretting a bit for the last hour of the flight, which should've been about 5 hours but was closer to 11 hours. His mother was impatient with him and kept threatening to spank him once we landed, if he said "one more word." As the plane landed, I stood up to get my things and turned around to congratulate her. "Your little boy is how old? Wow, only five? He was amazingly quiet during this flight," I told her. "I've never known a child to last through a five-hour flight, much less for eleven hours. He was so good for so long. I wish more children were as patient as your son." She looked surprised, and I think that little boy avoided his spanking that night, baruch Hashem.

-----

Then there was the flight that was supposed to take off at 3pm. They were overbooked, so I volunteered to be bumped to the next flight, which was supposed to take off at 5pm. I got on that second plane in good faith. Soon, a few things became apparent. One, despite the fact that it was the middle of August, someone had turned on the heater. Two, they weren't able to turn off the heater. Three, they didn't have any ice or cool drinks at all on the plane. Four, we wouldn't be taking off for a while. And five, we wouldn't be allowed off the plane, lest we scatter and get lost and not get back when we did get to take off.

As it happened, that flight sat on the runway until 10:30 that night. We were delayed seven and a half hours, 5.5 of them actually ON the hot, sweaty airplane itself.

The flight was one hour and ten minutes long, after which I caught the bus home from the airport, which took about an hour and twenty minutes. I could have actually rented a car and DRIVEN home faster than I got there that night!
