Mati wasn't too worried about where he was. After all, the grass wasn't as tall as it used to be. (Or maybe he was taller?) Oh, and he could almost see the horizon beyond the tall stalks.

The sun had just set but the sky was still tinged a deep orange to mark it's passing. He loved the evening the best, when the sky was still light enough to see but just dark enough to lend a hint of mystery. The grey pup shivered with excitement and ghosted forwards.

He'd watched Jeuri and his mother hunt (when he could manage to follow them) and had managed to pick up a few of their skills. Walking quietly was his favorite - he could sneak up on his siblings.

In fact, he normally preferred living silently. Tonight, however, joy bubbled up too strong to contain. The night was young, the moon yet to rise, and he had everything in front of him!

Humming musically to himself, he slid through the plains like a grey ghost and plotted a course back towards his mother's packlands.

As quietly as the young juvenile wished to stalk, he sadly was unable to get away on his own. The night sky shimmered just enough to catch the pelt of another, darker pup that was not too far behind. Keilantra, the eldest of the litter, choose not to keep her duties in mind, and was usually the youngest acting one of them all. Therefore, when she could have stopped the ghost like pup that wandered off, she chose instead to follow, and her paws traced his every move as her dark form slinked into the night.

Her pelt was strange indeed, hardly matching their mother's as the majority of the fur shone coal black, the other patches a deep blue and lavender color. She could slink through the night quite quickly, the dark color simply masking her lighter tints, and she chose to do just that for now.

They grew deeper into the hunting grounds, the grasses thinning slightly and growing lighter in color, the trees behind fading in view. Pausing a moment, she looked behind to stare at how far they had gotten, before turning her head back towards the bobbing ears of her brother. Lowering her own head, she smirked darkly and sped her pace, ready to pounce if she could catch him off guard. Tonight she would have some fun.

Mati was, unfortunatly, blithely unaware of his impending scare. His large ears were pricked forwards, focused on the world ahead of him, and his eyes scanned the darkening world with a strong intensity.

Of course his soft singing didn't help things at all.

He pretended he was alone, a sole adventurer in a world where only he existed. No... in a world where his family had been taken captive by the Hyenas. It was his job to find them, his mission to save them or perish in the effort.

Although it was only a game, his demeanor grew more serious and the singing faded away to a whisper covered by rustle of the grass around him. He was in the middle of their territory... deep behind enemy lines...

His shoulders dropped, ears flattened to make the most out of the scant cover nearby. Eyes scanned the brush.

They could be anywhere. He sniffed the air, searching...

Keilantra...?

She stiffled the giggle that rose in her throat as she listened to him sing, and as it faded she worked harder to keep her paw steps down. If he heard, she knew her fun would be over, and odds are she wouldn't get to mess around much afterward. She liked games, but she also respected her siblings, and when they said no...she simply looked for someone else to play with instead.

As soon as his ears fell she was close enough for a pounce, and readied her paws for a good one. She only had once chance. It was when he sniffed the air that she knew it was now or never and right away let out a loud bark and pounced, her paws flying and aimed right at the younger male. They may have been born at the same time, but she was older, if only a few minutes. Now, all she had to do was prepaire for the fall if they hit, or if he would dodge, though she had little doubt he knew of her approach.

Hmm. How strange. Suddenly the game wasn't that much fun anymore. It had become too real if he could smell his sister. Surely she wasn't following him - he would have heard her.

Just to be certain, he flicked an ear back.

He needn't have exhibited this caution, however. Kiel's bark split the silence and ripped into his sensitive eardrums with such strength that he almost yelped. Hyenas!

The pup's heart lept into his throat and at the same time his hackles rose. He spun and lept at the same time, rearing up on his hindlegs to give some sembalance of size to his small form. Something small, dark, and extrememly fast hit him square in the shoulders before he could dodge.

His back slammed into the padded earth with enough force to knock the breath out of his tiny lungs.

At the sight of his sister standing over him ( and clearly enjoying herself ) Mati's blue eyes widened. The suprise was sufficent enough to shock him into breathing again.

"What are you doing out here?"

Tail wagging at a wild rate, Keilantra's eyes shone with smug satisfaction at her new prize. Her forepaws still stood on his chest for a bit, and she fluffed out her own with that same smirk, before her tongue lolled out and she let out a cute giggle.

"Come on Matima, you thought you were all alone out here?" She giggled again before giving him a quick lick on the cheek and jumping off, wail still wagging though not as quickly, "I woke up and saw you leaving, and I just wanted to follow. I knew this would be fun!" Looking around she quickly sprinted a few feet and jumped onto a small rock, looking around at the dusk that fell against the lands and letting out a slight bark.

"Come look at this!"

Mati's face twisted into a grimace, but he allowed his sister her pride and stayed docially under her control until she lept off of him. He got up with an air of injured dignity and groomed his coat with an unpracticed tongue.

"No! Of course I heard you. I... just thought you were someone else..." Wow. Even he could see how lame his excuse was. Silently he hoped she hadn't heard him singing. Frown plastered on his small face he plodded over to the rock and heaved himself up.

"What? Oh." Blue eyes gazed solemnly out at the remnants of the sunset. "Yeah, but you should have seen it earlier! It was amazing."

Oh. Wait. She probably had seen it earlier. Mati sighed. He hated being suprised. It made him feel stupid. How could he protect his family if they could sneak around better than him?

But he couldn't stay mad at his sister, and his tail wagged in time to her own. "Momma will be mad if she finds out we came here." He warned nonchalantly. Not that he would go back - Kielantra might get into danger, and who would save her then?

"Than we just need to make sure momma doesn't find us at all..." She said in response to his worries, glancing over to him as her tail slowed, "As long as we don't get hurt, she wont stay mad at us for long...beside, we are still in the hunting grounds, so I am sure someone knows we are out here and is keeping watch...someone always is keeping watch."

With a quick roll of her eyes, she shifted on her paws for a moment before jumping back down and turning towards him, "You came out to explore yes? Well let's explore!" Her sentence ended with a playful bark, no worries of sleeping family near by, and her smile shone like the moon against the night sky. It was clear she was ready to start and adventure just as much as he, and before long she paused in thought on that subject.

"What were you doing out here Matima?"

Her words made sense, but he was still faintly worried. Besides, if someone was watching over them, then he or she was probably laughing at him right now.

Oh well. His sister's excitement was contageous and he couldn't keep the grin off his face. At her question, however, it faded slightly.

"Uh... I was just pretending... stuff." He shrugged. "Doesn't matter! Let's go!"

With a bound he lept off the rock, managed a somewhat graceful landing, and padded softly into the grass. He could see a stunted tree in the distance, not too far away. He'd always wanted to try and climb a tree...

With a grin he set off towards it, barking at his sister to follow.

She watched him after he question was asked, and perked a ear higher with his fumbling and slight delays. When he srugged, she seemed to raise a brow before grinning at the next demand, and followed him with her eyes as he jumped off the rock and moved past her, before turning and looking the same direction as he.

Eying the distance, she shook her head and followed after with a challenging bark of her own, moving from behind to try and catch up and race him towards the obvious destination.

"Race ya!" She called at the same time, tongue lolling out of her maw as her short legs and small paws tried their hardest to meet him for speed, seeing as he was slightly faster with his more masculin legs.

Mati's mouth lolled open in a wide grin as he panted, sides heaving in an effort to catch his breath. Paws thudded rapidly against the hard-baked plains and flew clumsily over obstacles. He flicked his ears back and grinned at his sister, barking out a challenge to match her own.

Ha! She might be a like a shadow when she crept through the grass, but here he was in his element - and knew how to use his speed well. But he did have to admit, she was fast... for a girl.

Mati watched her from the corner of his eye. Hmph. He'd have to get her to teach him how to sneak like she did. That was impressive, and then -

"Whoa!"

THUD.

The grey pup looked up at his sister from a crumpled position beneath the branches of the small tree. Good thing it had only been a glancing hit. He smiled, somewhat wryly, and cocked a brow.

"I win."

She followed him, sharing the glances with her own barking laughter. However, while he failed to see the tree, she did and she slowed down just slightly while keeping her eyes on her brother. His fall did little to hinder her laughter, and soon enough she had a hard time standing from all the laughter that flew through her lungs.

Finally, when she calmed down, she caught his statement and forced a frown to her maw.

"This time."

With that, she looked up to the tree and let out a breath, the smile returning, "Mati, look!"

"Alright." The pup concieded to his sister's point. "This time."

Secretly, he thought she could beat him at a lot of things. Running though... he was proud of that skill. He would be the speed of his family. And he would always be there to protect them. No enemy would be able to outrace him! Not the fasted Hyena or the canniest lion.

Mati grinned to himself.

"Whatwhatwhat!"

At his sister's cries he remembered the situation and scrambled to his feet. Tail cutting through the air, the pup followed her gaze up into the small tree. All he could see were the branches and leaves, and the stars that shone through like jewels.

Or eyes...

Mati shivered. The night was wonderful!
