Hey guys, I'm new to this guild and, as such, newly pregnant. We think I'm about a month and a half to two months along, but unfortunately as yet have not found the money to go and have a check-up.
As I don't have insurance of any kind (just moved from the UK to the US) does anyone have any suggestions for help throughout my pregnancy?

You can call/goto welfair and get medical to get checked up. What state do you live in? I only know the 1800 number for PA but would be more than Glad to help you find the one you need for were you live.

Welcome. Best wishes with your pregnancy. I hope you can find a clinic to take care of you soon. (probono maybe?) good luck. Check your yellow pages or something...maybe there is a number like what Munkey described that you can call and get info!

I'm living in MN at the moment, moving to OH probably later this year (after I give birth.) I found out today that the job my husband applied for comes with health insurance of $5000 a year. What kind of prices are we looking at for check-ups and midwifery?

*hugs RaiRai* Glad to see you!
Well, I've seen all sorts of ads for Baby your Baby here on the television, but it looks like it's a Utah thing. I know that they offer financial help. Perhaps there is a program similar to this where you live.

Midwives tend to be a somewhat cheaper option, since you're not paying for drugs or a hospital stay. I found one in my area that's attached to a hospital, so that if anything goes wrong during delivery they can trundle you to the appropriate wing. But they want you out within four hours of delivery, so...only do that if you trust your husband to take care of you. You *will* need rest, and if he can't have (paid) time off work a hospital stay would be best for your health. I hope he's banking vacation time...
I *think* the total midwife cost for me was put at just under $3000, but insurance did pick up most of that (I paid roughly $200 for my son and $100 for my daughter - different health plans). The type of insurance coverage will determine how much, of course.

Ms Jo What part of the UK did you move here from? that sounds like a story in and of itself! heart Bristol in the UK to Minnesota in the US. I'll probably be moving again late this year or early next year to Ohio where my husband has better job prospects.
At the moment we're waiting for a cheque to come through from an old job in the UK so that I have some money to arrange a hospital visit. If the calculator I used was right, I should be about 7-8 weeks now which means I'm a little over-due for my first scan and general check-up to give all the family history and all that jazz.

My doctor actually doesnt see me until Im close to 10w along. Also after the hospital visit and everything is said and done its $6500 for us to have the baby, but with the insurance we pay 20% of that. I realized it takes as much to be born as it does to get buried! eek So to to with what the others are saying doctors might be more expensive.
Congrats on the pregnancy! Are things going well so far? Any morning sickness or anything?

Morning sickness is no fun at all! I had morning sickness with my first pregnancy. With my second I got into Hyperemesis Gravidum and ended up on zofran just to be able to keep anything down (and prevent dehydration and malnutrition).

RaiRai Yes, morning sickness pretty bad, unfortunately. sweatdrop I had that problem too. Oh, it was awful.
For me, it helped to keep some crackers (or even ginger snaps, if I felt I could handle them) next to my bed, so that before I even really sat up, I could eat a little something, let it settle for a couple of minutes, and then get up. Also, you've probably heard about it, but the ginger thing...ginger snaps, ginger ale, etc. Calms the stomach sometimes. Eating tiny amounts throughout the day made me more likely to keep it down, as well. A bit of yogurt here, a piece of bread there, and maybe some plain oatmeal if I was feeling adventurous. XP
And, I only heard about them after my morning sickness was finally gone, but I've good things about Preggy Pops. They sell them at Babies R Us, I know, but you can prolly find them online easily, too.
Hopefully you'll find something that'll help. <3
