Just above the horizon, the sunlight showed, bouncing off every tiny little snowflake that fell softly from the sky. The morning was cool and blustery; the cold winds of the north were blowing, although not enough to bother a frolicking feline and her estranged partner. They had gotten a very early start to the day, considering their normal daily routine, at least. This had to be the earliest they’d been up in ages! But oh was it worth it, with a new soft blanket of white covering the lands, the pair just couldn’t resist a good romp through the forest.
Accompanying them was a soul not nearly as happy, and nowhere near thrilled. Aja, cast off by his own partner, the pair’s parent, Mew, a nocturnal feline, was slithering along angrily. He was irritated; it didn’t take more than a simple glance to see it pouring from the depths of his blood red eyes. If the dragon-like shifter didn’t have great patients, and an undying dedication to his friend, then he surely wouldn’t be were he was.
But who can really resist new fallen snow? The magic of winter seems to bring out the child in everyone, whether old, or still the child that we are portraying. Today was no exception. “This is awesome!” Sahra skipped through the almost knee deep snow, ice caked on the fur of hands, and even in her hair; it looked as if she’d just woken from a deep sleep in an icy snow cave! Luckily for her fur, she was in the mood to wear shoes today, and long pants, so her legs and feet were saved from the horrible n** of Jack Frost.
“I agree.” Ephrem slinked along side of the girl, attempting to keep up, he was not used to traveling in such conditions, but he enjoyed it, none-the-less. Well, he enjoyed the playful nature of the object, as for the temperature, the cold, he would rather do without. “But it’s kind of, well...” The lindworm paused in mid sentence, stopping for a moment to gaze off into the distance.
“Kind of what, Re?” A curious tone rang through the cheetah’s voice, she wondered of all the possibilities her dragon friend could come up with; all of the excuses he could use to get them back home. He probably just wanted to sleep more! “Have a backbone, Re,” Sahra teased, “It’s not that bad out here.”
She heard no response; even after a few moments passed, the dirt coloured dragon still lie seemingly in a daze, staring off somewhere, head tilted like a curious little kitten. “Hm.” What could this be? This thing—this shining thing—this thing that had caught his eye. “Look there.” Ephrem pointed with a clawed paw, “What is that? That, that glisteny stuff over there? It looks so smooth, and quite shiny.”
“That? Oh, that’s ice, duh, Re, what else would it be? Glass? I don’t think you could find that big of a window anywhere, at least no around here. You can’t tell me you don’t remember ice?” It was strange; Sahra swore that the young dragon had surely been around such an item in the past! But then again, the area they had lived in before was low land, and much warmer; home was where they spent all their time then, so they maybe they just never really came over ice.
“No. I don’t ever remember such a thing.” He admitted sadly, “I think I would remember such a thing if I had. It’s so...gorgeous.” Striking out ahead, Re hoped his way through the loosely packed snow, his sights set. He would go to this odd new beast! He would show it, oh yes.
“Hey wait for me~!” Padding not far behind her partner, the cheetah nearly lost her balance as one foot hit the slippery ice. “Woah!” She screeched playfully, spinning around in a circle on the flat of her leather bound heel. “This is really slippery; how cool! That means it must have just frozen over last night! Come on Re, let’s have some fun!”
Skidding across the semi-smooth, glimmering surface, the spotted girl, red sweater, jeans and all, bound forward towards their unsuspecting target. BANG! The cheetah rammed into...a stump!? Wait a second where’d that come from!? She had been sliding right towards Re just, not even, not even a second ago! What had happened!? “Uhh, Re!?” The feline blabbed in shock, “Where’re you? And where’d this come from!?”
Oh great, yet another embarrassing moment she would have to deal with! Well, on the upside, the only two beings around were Re, her partner, who was currently busy being fascinated with the chilly new element of his, and her long time secondary care giver, Aja, who never paid attention to much. All should be good.

Miracles had not ceased to amaze him. As far as the eye could see there was a fresh blanket of fluffy white substance that changed to water if a breath were let out upon it. It was marvelous, though on the downside he had to admit that the snow was hauntingly cold. It pierced him, made his body sting with the cold - which had led to the direct putting on of a coat that was far too large for he himself. The factor could not be prevented. Cold and shivering, Maximilian had been without a coat or sweater - and Kenneth had yet to gather any real attire for the boy, which had been the task of the day when they had left. As the direct result, Max had been cold until Kenneth had handed over his own heavy coat in favor of not getting the young otter sick.Needless to say, Max was pleased by the gesture, a smug look smearing across his face as he had buttoned it up. To his distaste, the jacket was incredibly large on him, his shoulder nearly slipping through the neck area, and his arms not even showing through the sleeves; even his body was nearly hidden, the jacket looking almost like a dress. Unaware of such a thing, Max had continued on with his walking, swinging his arms or diving to the ground to breathe and the white substance and create water. After a while, he had the urge. He had looked back at Kenneth pleadingly, only for his stare to shift to devilish. Without any request, he had whipped his tail and flung snow at the man before diving to slide on the ground.
...
The jacket prevented a smooth glide, and instead of getting the feel of wind against his face, Max had received the feel of being out-winded. "Owww..." He had groaned, rolling onto his back and holding his stomach. "Tha' hurts..."
"Don't do it. You'll hurt someone. You can... Wait, just wait. We'll go to a park later and you can slide around, but don't outside of a park." Kenneth had cleared his throat, brushing snow off of his body. He was freezing as it was without his jacket and the boy had only made his issue worse.
"Why not? It's fun! They said you liked fun!" Max had scoffed, hitting his tail on the ground while staring upward at the man. He was greeted by a half-hearted smile.
"Who said I didn't? But when we get into down there are little things called cars that ride on the road, and there are crowds of people. No sliding. Later." Kenneth had explained while the boy rose, only to earn more snow in the face.
Max had let out a ring of laughter, one finger pointed at the man as he had brushed himself off. "Got'cha! Got'cha!", he had bellowed - and with that he had turned to run away, creating the game of chase.
The game did not last too long. Max had run at an angle towards the ice, only to slip and fall flat on his rump. Seething over the fact, he had started to get up, only to be caught by Kenneth's grip. Game Over.

"Ahh! Re!" Slip and slide, head over heels, Sahra had until this moment been oblivious to just how slippery the ice really was! She never knew it could be such a formidable opponent! "Help me, please, I can't walk worth crud on this stuff!" It was true; she really didn't want to admit it, but, she just couldn't.
As the cold chill of melted snow chilled the underside of the snake-like serpent, dew dripped off of the end of his claws. "What?" He asked, dumbfounded, "Oh sorry!" There was a thick sound of claws scraping against the ice, the sound was nearly as piercing as nails running along a chalkboard; how horrible! "I'm coming." He mouthed bluntly.
"Thank you..." Sighing in relief as her partner slithered along her side; the cheetah wrapped both arms around the lindworm, and hoisted her spotted body up onto his back. Well now that that was over, and she was safely mounted upon her partner's back.
"Okay Re, what can we do, um, beside stare downward into an icy abyss..." Who really wanted to stare down at a translucent sheet of frozen water anyways? "Hey wait--" Head turning, Sahra realized something, something she hadn't noticed all this time; people? How long had they been there? Who where they? And more importantly, were they a threat? "Hey Re, heads up, someone’s kind of coming this way!"
Slender head shooting upward alertly, Ephrem's lizard like snout opened part way, giving show to a row of deadly jagged teeth. His naturally aggressive nature was triggered; instinctively he off a hiss of warning.
"Shush!" Glaring at the dragon, Sah clamped her hands down around his muzzle, slamming it shut with an alarming loud crack. Of course it didn't hurt him, the sound was just somewhat, well, disturbing. "Um, Hello?" She shouted out into the deep white sea of snow and ice. This was...strange.

"LegoLEGOLEGO!" Max had demanded. It was tedious how Kenneth seemed to consistently boggle his mind by either encouraging his entertainment or condemning it. One thing he had not grown use to was the halting by form of seizing.
Snarling lightly, the young boy had yanked his arm away and stuck out his tongue before looking toward the glassy ice. It was majestic, though he wasn't sure if he liked it or detested it. There was no water! And everything was cold - white or blue, dull and... Not alive. Where was the fun in such a stark world? As he was observing the thing and blocking out Kenneth's ramble of a comment on running near Ice, something cut into his mind - a loud, sharp 'Hello'. Looking up, his green eyes had started searching. He spun around once, then twice, not spotting anything until after a while. A wide grin crossed his face as he waved. Without speaking, he had looked at Kenneth and gone off on his rush once more, diving at the ice and sliding on his stomach - a horrid move that had resulted in the jacket growing cold and further stinging him. Wincing, he had tried to stop, only to find he could not! Yelping, he had gone a good distance in before he had ceased movement, and at that point he had landed somewhere along the line near the girl and her companion. "C-cooold...." He whispered before looking up, giving a coy and edged grin to the two stranger. "Hi!"
Kenneth, on the side lines, had leaned a little, not daring to step on the ice. "Max!" He had shouted, but dare he not step on the ice...

Luckily for Ephrem, he didn't slide around to much, at least not as much as the two four limbed wonders in front of him. It made him proud to slither! "Hm." Jolting his head to the side, making the cheetah release his mouth, he shot his partner a glare.
But for this thing, this brown lump that had come from nowhere, what was it? A crazed child of some sort, obviously, one who knew not how to dress for the cold conditions of winter. No wonder why the thing was cold; the poor pathetic looking thing. "Hello." The lindworm spoke with his deep toned voice, feeling sorry for the little creature, he was obliged to ask, "Want a hand, maybe?"
Wow that's a first. Sahra was shocked; she had never seen Re actually help someone he didn't know before! How nice; it was definitely a break through, even if it was obvious that he meerly felt sorry for the kid. "Hai-yo!" She re-replied, grinning, "Having some fun with the ice, I see? Don't you think it's a bit um, to slippery? I don't know about you but I can't handle it." The feline laughed, mostly just at herself, smiling the whole route, she patted her dragon friend on the head, one arm still wrapped firmly around his neck. "Don't worry, he looks a little estranged, but his bark is usually worse than his bite."

Max had stared up at the two strangers; his eyes had dazzled with intrigue and delight. He certainly wasn't a shy boy. He smiled, he watched them, and he took in their appearances in the most informal of ways. Everything about him wreaked of casual tendencies. As he watched, he had seemed to change expression from time to time. He would scrunch his face when he moved to stand, only to slip on the ice and once more fall to his stomach. He would laugh lightly before rolling over on it. Joy and frustration all in one. He seemed positively mad, but such was the nature of youth.
His motion had ceased entirely as the lindworm had offered him assistance. A surprised, awe-filled expression had dawned upon him as he had nodded. His arms had stretched out, his tiny, fuzz-covered hands opening and closing in a silly manner; then he had grinned once more. His focus had shifted from the dragon to the cheetah, interest falling to the both of them in some manner. His tail had clacked out a small beat before he had paused with it lifted. "It's cool!" He had spoken within a loud breath. "C-c-cold, but it's cool. I can slide good - and Pie can't walk."
Hesitating only a moment, he had turned his head in the direction of his guardian. His tongue had protruded his lips in an almost rude manner. "He's a 'fraidy c-c-c-cat. 'Fraidy cat!" Max had howled before shifting away; then he has stopped again. A nervous feeling had settled within his gut over the idea of biting. He didn't want to be bitten by anything. "He bites?" Max had murmured breathlessly.
Kenneth's shoe-adorning feet had lightly touched the ice. The crackling noise of it beneath his feet had caused him to jump back quickly, though he felt a determination over the matter. For one, he wasn't comfortable with something he was responsible for being on something that could easily crack and create problems. At the same time, he was apprehensive of putting himself in danger over something as silly as a disobedient boy. Heaving a sigh, he had stomached his fear and made way to the group. His glasses had slid down his nose as he stepped briskly, occasionally slipping a meager amount. He had not stopped until he stood just beside Max, and, at that point, he had given each of the motley crew of nonhumanoid beings a stern glance. The ice was no place for games.
Still, as he watched Max struggle to get himself up, Kenneth had not been capable of remaining stiff. He had given an amused style before covering his face with a hand. "I'm sorry. He didn't run into you, did he?" He had asked within what appeared to be a stiffled laugh. Max had continued floudering like a fish.
"'fraidy cat!" Max had blurted in spite, only to fall silent when he lost interest in the growing annoyance his care-taker exhibited.

Sahra watched the young boy with a bemused look on her face, as he slipped to and fro. The little thing seemed endlessly expressive, and she found it to be rather comical. A giggle escaped between her teeth as she watched him flop around, trying to get to his feet. "You're just going to keep slipping." The end of her tail twitched, her eyes aglow with amusement.
Ephrem lowered his body to the ground, pushing the cheetah off from his neck. As annoyed as she could have felt, Sah didn't mind. She plopped to the ground and sat innocently on the lindworm's muscular coils. Planting both elbow's on her knees, leaning her face against flattened palms, her fingers curled up against her cheeks.
"Of course you can't walk very well, it's ice." Reaching out with his muzzle, the dragon ignored the boys odd fit of arm flailing, as funny as it looked, and grabbed at his coat with his teeth. As soon as he got a hold of the small furry thing, he pulled him upward, and then over toward himself, releasing him in front. Constricting upward a bit, he eyed the boy, tilting his head. "Eh?" Ephrem blinked, his voice nearly skipping on it's own accented etch. "You're a strange child." His mouth clamped shut.
Sahra blinked, "Um, no he doesn't bite, at least not like you're thinking." Even though the statement may not make sense to a listener, a bystander, it made perfect sense in her mind. Ephrem only snapped at people who annoyed him, and he would normally never take his teeth to a child so small. Sure he might put up a fuss, hissing or growling, but unless the kid had a flamethrower or something, he would more-or-less attempt to ignore them.
The man who approached them put Sahra in an instant state of discomfort. She didn't know why this person did, and the boy didn't, but she figured the vast difference between a child and an adult, and a potential D-Corp child, and a 'normal' human made the effect. "Uh, okay. Who are you?" Her ears were back-a-slight, gaze switching from small-and-very-furry child, to not-so-furred man. "His guardian?" It was a logical presumption. "And what's your name, too?" She smiled toothily at the boy.

Max had appeared blissfully oblivious to the funny nature of his behaviors. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary for him, and he had only continued his lively and motion-filled mannerisms. The pressure of having been lifted from the ground by his coat had startled him a little. His mouth had opened into an oval-like shape, a few noises escaping as he wriggled and squirmed until he had been released and stood up. Still, his jittering feet had caused him to slip a little. Though he had not fallen, his skated in place for balance.
"It's slippery, though!" Max had protested happily, as if to insist the sliding effect was the most important to him. Brushing it off, he had grown into the statement of being strange, which had cast a disapproving look to his face. His cheeks had puffed a little as be chimed. "Am not!" With such words out of his throat, he had stuck out his tongue before folding his arms. If there was one thing Max did not enjoy, it was being called strange. It had never happened before, and the sound of it was not pleasant to his ears.
As his tongue retracted into his mouth, the smile and brightness had returned. All traces of his prior disagreement had seemed to vanish into thin air. "He doesn't eat people?" He had breathed. His arms had fallen to his side, swinging a bit before he had looked back and up at Kenneth. "Saaaaafe." He had sang loudly. "He doesn't bite!"
Kenneth had shaken his head slightly to himself. The boy was going to be the death of him. He loved children, but there was so much ... So much energy, and so much need for mayhem. Just looking at those eyes, he could tell the furry boy was thinking something. With his feet planted as firmly as they could be, he had grasped the child's coat by the collar as if to hold him still and ensure he did not go sliding off again.
Then Sahra's discomfort had sank into his mind. His cheeks had flushed a rosy red before he had cleared his throat, a little embarrassed over being asked who he was. It was nothing knew, but the girl was certainly young, and he estimated it was a little awkward for an adult to be present. Nevertheless, he was as casual as he always was in his manners. Soon the flush had faded away. He had glanced from dragon to girl, placing two and two together rather slowly. Yet, he had not spoken of the matter quickly. t was hardly a surprise or priority of his.
"I guess you could say that." Kenneth had sighed. His grip on Max's coat had tightened as the boy squirmed a bit more, flinging his arms and clacking his tail in his own hyper fit. "Guardian's a little formal; he lives with me ---"
"Pie's name is Kenneth. He's a teeeeeeeacher." Max had blurted out, grinning his own toothy grin at the girl.
Kenneth had shaken his head once more; his hand had rubbed lightly at his beard. "Kenneth York." He had affirmed as he released Max's coat, watching the boy slip around more. He would never understand what compelled the boy to move as much as he did.
Max had nodded. One of his hands had been raised high in the air. "My name's Max! Max...Maxiiii...Maaaa." His voice had sputtered as he tried to gather his full name. He simply couldn't pronounce it. "Maaahhh."
"Maximilian, Max." Kenneth had offered.
"Yeah! That! But I'm just Max. Max. Max." Max had dropped his arm to swing it once more. He was terribly immature in attitude, but that was all the better for him. He had such fun doing such simple things.
