First of all, I must say this: I love books. I have three, almost four, bookcases filled with them sitting in my room, and I have read every single one of them. But people nowadays seem to have no use for them. I know some guys in my school who, if handed a book, would look at it, scratch their heads, and then use it in their next bonfire. I really don't know about people anymore. Maybe it's just because I live in a hick-town where half the school was gone on the first day of deer-hunting season, I can't be sure. It just seems to me like people are getting more and more into electronics, and then forgetting those poor books, left to gather dust on a shelf. It would also explain why people seem to be getting dimmer. Books are supposed to be good excersise for your brains, and with less people reading them, well... -------------------------------------- I love shared opinions, and I'd also like to know if anyone else has noticed this decreased interest in books. ninja

I AGREE FULLY! What has become of the world when books are forgotten? I'm considered a freak at my school because I always have a book on hand. Which quite frankly makes me feel like gagging. I'm virtually one of the only people who regularly visits my school library, and probably one of a small handfull who actually know the librarian's names.

[Hi Badger! Ninjas rule!] I have three other friends who also love books. The rest of the people in my school only read when they absolutely have too. It's kind of sad. And I would visit the school library, but it's pretty tiny, and a quarter the books in it are for fourth graders.

[Hi! Pirates are better!] The sad part is, my librarians are used to scorn rather than kindness, so when I once offered to help re-shelve books, they kind of starred at me for a while, utterly confused. I tried to get my friends to read by dragging them to the library with me, but they mock the books and ridicule the cover art. Failed attempts to revive the reader in others.

[Pfft. You wish.] My friends are all pals with the librarians. xd They can even get into there when it's supposed to be closed. All of my friends hang out in the library. Whether or not their actually reading kind of depends on who it is. Once in a while, they'll get themselves kicked out for being to loud. Besides that, the library is often dominated by sixth graders for some class or another. It's awkard standing there with a bunch of kids staring at you. That's one of the reasons that I don't go in there much.

[Careful what you wish for, because it might come true!]
My grade doesn't have a designated library time, so I end up running in there and grabbing the first book I see. It makes the books I read diverse, but I'd still rather have more time and pick one or two out that I would really enjoy.

[Unless my ninjas stop it from coming true!]
We have a certain time for library, but unfortunatly, I'm in band during that time. So, I always end up in there during lunch time. It works out well enough for me though.

[Ninja's have no power over the complex minds of the pirates!]
I prefer fiction books to anything else. Fantasy is the gateway to my sanity through which I make an ounce of sense. What genre do you read?

[Complex minds? You mean drunken men with swords?]
Yep, fantasy mostly. Once in a while, I'll read something else, but those are very rare occasions when I have nothing else to read and lose my sanity for a while. I also read fiction books that have no fantasy at all in them. But there still just as good. Oh yeah, sci-fi futuristic stuff is pretty good too.

[Have you ever tried getting drunk then using a sword?! It's got to be tough! Therefore, it is complex. ninjas just throw sharp stars around.]
Sci-Fi's good, and when you mix it with fantasy it's even better! I can't read anything with science or math content though. My head spins and you can't make any sense out of me for days.

[Hey don't insult the stars! Those things hurt a lot. *thwack* See! Besides, if it's so hard to handle a sword and get drunk at the same time, why don't the pirates just stop getting drunk?]
Yep. I like fantasy mixed with sci-fi too. And what with math and science mixed in, well, yeah. It does get hard to read, but if you're reading something like that, than you're strange. XD Most books I read have almost nothing in them like that. Maybe a mention of it here or there, but nothing complex. And if there is, I usually skip over it to avoid the head-spinning.

[Ouch. Those stars DO hurt! Well, if pirates stop getting drunk, what would they do with all the rum and wine and stuff? Give it to the dolphins?! The last thing we need are loopy dolphins!]
Do you have an author you prefer? Or a few? I couldn't name just one off the top of my head. After the first few dozen books, they all kind of run together.

[Are you kidding?! Loopy dolphins are just what we need! Do you know how awesome that would be?! I would just love to see a drunk dolphin.]
Hmm... Tamora Pierce is a wonderful author. And Cornelia Funke. When I was younger, I always read Beverly Clearly. But for the most part, I don't even pay attention to the authors. I could run up to my room and tell you the names of all the authors of all my books, but that would take way too long.

[No way! They'd beach themselves trying to make a sandcastle or something.]
Diana Wynne Jones is one of my favorites. She is an amazing writer. I also like David Clement-Davies, C.S. Lewis, and so many others.

[Possibly. And you don't think that's be funny? Because, personally, I think it'd be hilarious.]
David Clement... That sounds really familiar. What did he write?
