Okies, this is a question for all the would be Joe Stumps and Rusty Cooleys here.
When writing instrumentals in that vein, are there any good naming conventions for them, or do folks just tend to name them whatever sounds cool and catchy? whee

A general guideline is to think of whatever made you think of writing the song or feel like writing the song. What did you feel like or think about? Then put whatever it is into words... One of mine is Boo Doo Voodoo xD

Ah, thanks.
I have this one pseudo ballad that makes me alternately think of rain and a sea.

That's about it for doing instrumental naming. If you have a theme to work on from the beginning, then you'll have some Idea what to name it at the end. In my case, I named my song "Octane" because of the sheer energy that I felt recording it. It's all a matter of preference, and you just have to name it what you feel.

I would name it like anyother song. What the song is about. Just because no ones talkin in the song doesn't mean its not speaking. Music is its own language and you should name it according to what the song says.

What were you thinking while you wrote the song? What is it expressing? That's all a name's for, isn't it?

For instance, my friend and I wrote an instrumental the day after my girlfriend dumped me. We had spent the night lighting things on fire and overall being total morons. The next day, we talked about how instead of the conventional chocolate ice cream we had used fire for the breakup. Then we jammed a bit and ended up writing a song. Hence, "Fire Beats Chocolate Ice Cream" was born.

But that's just me.

Perhaps you could think about how instrumentals by the pros relate to the names?

A brilliant example is "Losfer Words (Big 'Ora)" by Iron Maiden. AMAZING instrumental, which makes you exactly what the title suggests. Losfer words!

Well the Allman Bros. mad really great instrumentals that they gave ppl names which I think is a really good idea. But if the song made u think of the ocean i guess crashwave is a good name for it.But its your choice.

An excellent question! I write mostly instrumental songs. The main way to do it is as people have said, name the song what it means to you.

For instance, I have one that I wrote after I fell for this girl. I realised I liked her after a hike on the Duke of Edinburgh award. So I named it Thistle. Or you could base it on what the song feels like. I wrote one song that just made me think about being on a train in the country side, so called it The Hills and a Window Seat.

Then again I have one song called Ezekiel 25:17, purely because I watched Pulp Fiction the night before and I love that scene. What's funny is the song sounds nothing like what you'd expect it to judging by the name.

But if all else fails, call it Untitled. =P

i just go whatever i see around me or what i was thinking of at the time . Most of the time i do the name first then work off of that .
