It was a gorgeous late afternoon, the time of day when the sun was making a definite move towards the horizon but hadn't quite yet started to color the sky red. A pity, because the red sky was so very attractive...like other things that were red.

That thought was very much on the mind of the vibrant red stallion that was reclining on the bank on the lake, attention fixed on his curly tail as he deftly braided a fresh batch of black roses into the hairs. Black roses were very attractive, especially with his vibrant coloring, but they tended to wilt and needed to be refreshed whenever they looked like they were starting to go bad. Still, he was oddly fond of the flowers; they had a very practical purpose, after all, when one was courting.

The trees near the lake provided thankful cover against the heat of the day; however with the setting sun the dark colored mare made her way to the lake to drink and wash the dust from her coat. She plod through the forest with a thunderous crunching of twigs; it wasn't so much that she feared nothing as that she always stepped heavy and with authority.

The birds grew silent as she marched by, her dark pelt hid rather well in the shadows cast through the trees by the ever steady setting sun. Dark purple, she could be almost invisible come nightfall, save the brilliantly white lightning bolt on her forehead.

Growing close to the lake, the mare could see another, a male. He was as very red as she was very purple and seemed to be busy with mares' doings. She wasn't accustomed to stallions "prettying" themselves, though in all honesty she spent very little time with others, save a visit to the teepee now and again and an exchanged word with the winged one who claimed that human as his as well.

She slowed to a stop and watched in mild curiosity.

It's difficult to say whether Guilian would have been offended or amused had he heard the 'prettyfying' comment. But since it was a mare making the comment, the liklihood of him finding it amusing was much greater than the other. Indeed, he often had to chuckle at himself for his fondness for the flowers...but they served him too well to give up on them now.

At any rate, he was almost finished with his floral arranging. Tucking in the last rose, he tilted his head sideways and examined the result. Charming, as always.

Deciding that he'd managed to acheive perfection once again, Guilian rose to his feet, shaking out his mane and tail jauntily. Casting a brief glance at his reflection in the lake, Guilian turned and started off along the shore in search of something to snack on. However, a glint of white among the trees caused him to pause. Now, what could that be?

The mare took a step back on reflex; immediately she was annoyed by her shock. So what if he could see her? It was rather rude to have him stare as such, in her opinion, but of course she couldn't know that he only caught a glimpse of her bolt.

Raising her head in graceful elegance, she stepped out from the cover of the trees and walked proudly toward the water. Stretching her long neck down to drink, Sky pointedly ignored the stallion. If he wanted to stare, it was his business. She was not obligated to prance around in show.

Though he'd been puzzling for a few moments, Guilian hadn't yet realized that it was a mare he was looking at until she cleared it up for him by stepping out of the woods...and walking up to him? Blinking rapidly in confusion, Guilian watched as she walked up to him...and past him to the lake. Oh. Drink.

Well, so much for the charming if untrue thought that she'd been walking to him. It would have been nice, but considering that he'd been completely alone and expecting to stay that way for the night, this was a vast improvement.

So he took advantage of the situation, watching intently as the mare took her drink. And watching her was far from hard; she had a graceful body, silvery mane, and was an interestingly deep shade of purple, one that he'd never seen before. Very intriguing.

After watching her for a few minutes, Guilian flicked an ear. "Good evening, Chica; my apologies for my forwardness, but I've never seen anyone with that sort of mark before." In reference to her lightning bolt.

Her eyes cut toward his direction; his admiring stares burned through her pelt as if he stared into her soul. Sky wasn't too fond of the feeling and was glad when he decided to speak.

Marking? Raising up she half-turned her head toward the winged stallion, water dripping from her dark chin. "Hmm?"

For a moment the mare drew a blank; she raised an eyebrow skeptically before catching her broken reflection in the flickering water. There it was staring her in the face, a jagged bolt of brilliant white that resembled the surges of electricity in the midst of full storm.

Oh, the bolt!" For a second her eyes reflexively crossed unflattering, but she shook her head ever so slightly to recover. "It is rather bright."

Oh yes, that was articulate, she scolded herself silently. So far the mare had not been a social creature; it was just her luck that manners have to be learned. Tossing her mane nervously, she gathered as much poise as she could. "I rather like the lightning; however, at night it reflects the moonlight enough to get me seen by humans and other predators."

Good grief but the mare was amusing! The way she had looked at him as though he'd lost his mind, those brilliant eyes swimming with confusion, then the light that raced across like a beam of purest lightning as she realized what he meant, only to be thrown into what seemed to be confusion as she replied...it was so adorable, he wanted to laugh and tweak her nose for the amusement she gave him. But that would hardly be gentlemanly, would it?

He did allow himself a few low chuckles, though, but kept them tempered so that she wouldn't be alarmed or (hopefully) offended. "Indeed, it is very bright, Chica; so bright that all I saw as you stood in the shadows was it gleaming like a beacon. You can imagine my confusion, consequently...but now that you are out where I can see you, things have cleared up quite a bit."

Quite a bit indeed, as his wandering eyes were more than indicative of. But staring too much was rude, so he let his eyes drift back to meet hers. "If you dinna mind my asking, Chica, why were you lurking in the darkness like that? Tis dangerous to be out in the woods at night, after all; you can't ever know what sort of dangerous creatures are out."
