Calm down; you'll be fine. 3nodding

You have a lot of time to prepare, and just practice and review every night. Think about what you want to say in your speech, and go for it! This is an awesome time for you, so be happy! 3nodding

It's not that bad preparing, and it really brings you colser to Judaism. Try to look forward to it. You're about to become an adult member of your conregation. Personally, my bar mitzvah was the most moving experience of my life... and the after party was awesome!

See if you can get your cantor or your leining instructor to make an mp3 recording of your Torah portion and Haftarah portion. Stick it on your computer and/or iPod and listen to it throughout the day, singing along when you can. Practice it until you could do it backward and forward in your sleep, and also every other part of the service that you get to lead, so that you'll be very confident on the day.

Think about what it means to become a bar mitzvah, a son of sacred obligation. This is an awesome responsibility, but Hashem would not have made you a Jew if he thought you couldn't handle it.

very true.

though, in light of that, i find it funny that people spend so much time and energy on leining, of all things. of course, it wouldn't be so bad if people followed up, and actually learned to lein any given krea. but most just push to memorize a small portion, then never pay it any mind again. it just seems so futile...

Personally, I'm hoping to get much better at it, so that I can pick up any Torah portion and read at least the bits that one reads for minchat Shabbat, from the very beginning of the parashah. The parts that we read during women-only tefillah gatherings.

xd I practiced mine so much I ended up memorizing it without meaning to. Still ended up reading it in my actual bat mitzvah, though. 3nodding

I don't know if your cantor does it, but mine was amazing in that he stayed with us for hours a week on top of normal lessons, and gave us a cassette tape with our portions chanted on it so we could either chant with him or listen to it otherwise. ^^

that's the way to do it. 3nodding

the actual leining has to be read-if one says directly it from memory, it doesn't count. (in fact, to a certain extant, it's forbidden to repeat any torah sh'b'ksav from wrote)
