I haven't but I’m taking a textiles course. It depends on what you’re making. I’m making a cape though lol If the material is slippery (Polyester) I would not recommend it, I tried to make a top with the stuff, It ripped and the sewing machine chewed it up... lol

I suggest a rather lightweight cotton, then use a couple layers to make the skirt stick out. Knits can do bad, bad things to sewing machines...

First of all go out and get a pattern or make one yourself. Have you decided on your colour scheme yet? Is this Gothic lolita or Strawberry or what? How much are you willing to pay? Is there a deadline?

ha, I'm making my own Gothloli outfit too. I'm buying a cheap dress to start out with and then I'm going to add stuff to it. like lace and maybe some buckles her and there. >=]
i bought the accessories online though :3

I would love to make my own goth loli dress but my dressmaking skills are...well, non-existant. sweatdrop I suppose the easiest thing for me to do would be to start of with a dress and accessorise it to my liking. X3

Well, what I can tell you for now is that when I was making my dress (it's half complete) I just bought a small amount of each cloth-type (cotton, silk, polu, etc.) and tried it on my sewing machine. If it doesn't eat it up, it's ok, if it does, it's a rejcts but wjhat I did with my cloths and stuff, I tested it out before I made a dress of anything and I didn't thrown them a away, I kept them for reference.
Get it now? I hope that was good advice..

...What I've been planning to do is take some of the old skirts and clothes, restitch them and add a few new touches. o__o I don't know if that's considered cheating, but if it is, I'm a proud cheater. xD A lot of my clothes are oddities I buy from around here [Portland, Oregon]. Hawthorne has a lot of shops supposedly, but I have yet to go there. Good luck with the dress.

The fabric depends on your look and what your budget it. If you want it to stand out, do your best with heavier weight fabrics and work with cottons for breathability. Unless the design calls for it (like ero-loli), avoid anything too shiny, it's a different look. You can't go wrong with altering an already made dress if you're a beginner and then you can move into other designs when you start to learn more about sewing! I started out altering too.
Yes yes, do take a picture when you're done!
