A knock rattled on Aphismet's apartment door.

Standing outside, shivering, Isi tried knocking again. He didn't expect anyone to answer the door immediately (it was, after all, midnight around the time he finally made it to the city and found his way around), but he couldn't help but knock eagerly at the door. There was a small fear in his mind that Maasi might've followed after him after she broke out of her room. Isi knew that it was highly unlikely, but he still thought about it nonetheless. His cheek still hurt from where his adopted grandmother had backhanded him. Not only that but his legs were very tired from not using his crutches all day and being forced around the house on his knees to do chore work.

Shifting his crutches underneath his arms once more, Isi hugged himself slightly against the cold and knocked even louder, hoping that Aphismet or Rivener would hear him.

Rivener frowned as he floated leisurely to the door. He knew he wasn't supposed to open it, but he'd at least peek out and see who it was that was knocking and buzzing their doorbell. It was a surprise that none of the other building residents had opened their own doors to yell at the knocker by the time the Raevan made his way to the portal.

Riv looked out the little spyhole to the outside, and saw a startling thing; the cripple boy! How odd! Why would the kid be here at this time of night? Rivener had first been annoyed at being woken, but now he smiled, thinking that the boy would perhaps have brought the singing whale with him. He placed his hand on the door, and pulled it open.

"What are you doing here?" he asked in his usual honey-voice, doing it by reflex. He peered outside with his red eyes, scanning the area for the whale. "Aphismet is still at work, but he should be back soon. Do you want to come in?" Rivener lifted an eyebrow at the mark on Isi's cheek, and tilted his head at the boy's weak legs. What had happened today?

"Yes, please," Isi said tiredly, "Who...Who are you looking f...Oh, that's right. Beauregard. He followed me, but now he's tired, so I stuck him in my backpack. He should be waking up soon after his nap...I, um...Had a rough time at my own home and I ran away before it could get worse. I was hopg I could stay here until it was safe to go back home."

The cripple boy was very happy that someone had been awake to answer his pleas at the door. Even if Aphismet wasn't home yet, Isi was glad for Rivener being there.

Rivener pouted ever so slightly at being told that Beauregard was sleeping, but he let the boy in nonetheless. "Aphismet said you were welcome whenever you wanted; I suppose that means now." Riv normally wasn't in the habit of caring what humans did, but in this case, the Raevan felt a curiosity he'd never experienced before: this was just like in the movies! A hurt child, looking for help, hiding from... from what? Druglords? Abusive parents? Perhaps Rivener could even end up being the hero in this story?

"What happened to you?" Rivener asked as he floated over to the kitchen, opening the fridge and bringing the boy a nice big glass of milk and a few cookies. Riv's acting was flawless: he personified concern. He could win an Oscar. After all, he'd learned from the pros.

Watching as Rivener floated about the house, Isi couldn't help but express interest. However, when he started treating him like the savior and protector, Isi couldn't help but watch with trained interest and curiosity. What was he going to do next? Rivener was always surprising him! ...Maybe that was because Isi was just so interested in raevans since he was expecting one.

Slipping his backpack off his shoulder and letting it slide to his hands, Isi reached insideand he removed Beauregard from its depths. The red whale was still sleeping, but Isi jostled him awake and he rose softly into the air, shaking its bleary head. As soon as the whale was out, Isi set the backpack down by the door and he hobbled into the living room where he recieved the glass of milk. He leaned on his crutches and sipped at glass, "Thank you very much, Riv," Isi replied. Then the question, Isi mused his mouth and he considered the answer. He dn't know if he should tell Riv or not, but...Who else was there for him to tell? There was nothing that could harm him, right?

Taking a sigh, Isi said dejectedly, "I think my grandma's wacko friends came over to the house while I was gone and they got Old Maasi drunk and left. So she woke me up in the morning and forced me, military style, to do the chores without my crutches. It was late in the evening when I couldn't do it anymore and I tried to stand up against her and get the baton away from her, but she..." Isi paused, and reached up with his free hand to rub his cheek, glancing away from Rivener, "She hurt me. So I locked her in her room and ran away..." Then out of pure curiosit, Isi asked, "What do you eat, Rivener?"

For a second, Rivener's practiced look of concern cracked, when Beauregard was let free of the backpack. The Raevan's mask only faltered for one small instant, however, as Riv convinced himself that the whale would be there later; he shouldn't break character in the middle of a performance. It was a rookie mistake.

The boy's story was very much something you would find in a movie; an abusive parent whose low-brow friends forced into taking illicit substances, waking up a child and forcing it to do things against its will, perhaps reliving their military days? Rivener wondered what the old Maasi's story was... No doubt if they could find out her inner troubles, they could reach her emotionally, and fix the entire situation. However, Riv didn't want to be the one who has to go there and do this. He could only talk to the kid, for now.

"Nevermind what I eat, what happened to you... That's terrible," Rivener said. "What a horrible grandma! Why do you live with someone like that? Didn't you say that you had no family, last time you were here?" Yes, despite appearances, Rivener DOES listen to almost everything that's said around him.

Isi shrugged while he balanced precriously on his crutches, sipping all the meanwhile at the milk he was given and nibbling on the cookies. The boy seemed as if he were trying to to care and treat the situation as if it were a normal everyday happening.

"She's...She's different. She lost her marbles a long time ago, so now she changes like the TV changes channels. One moment she's Indiana Jones, the next moment she's the Last Roman Emperor. It's different and it's a hassle, but Old Maasi can be sweet some times. She's the one who got me the raevan...Well, I don't have much of a bloody choice, you see. She adopted me from the children's home. Old Maasi's the only one I have left." The crippled boy spoke of this all in a relaxed sarcastic tone, but Rivener could hear the hurt underneath his voice. The pain from his cheek wouldn't disappear so quickly.

Isi was amazed at Rivener's responses and everything, he was completley amazed at his ability to learn and...Well everything. Isi was astounded.

Rivener floated closer and placed a hand on Isi's back gently, guiding the boy inside and onto the couch, where he could get off his weary feet. Riv didn't have to fake his interest in the boy's story; learning about people's situations was always intriguing. It was the caring about those situations that Rivener had to fake.

He faked it very well.

"I'm sorry to hear all that. So many ups and downs... How old are you, though? Soon enough you should be able to leave that place and be on your own, right?" Rivener thought for a moment, brows furrowed, before continuing: "Is she even ALLOWED to adopt someone? Wouldn't a children's center run some kind of competency check before allowing a person to be a parent? From what I hear, it's really hard to adopt a kid..."

The front door's doorknob jingled as a set of keys was inserted. There was a rattle, a click, then a jiggle of the now-locked door... Another rattle, another click, and then Aphismet burst in, fumbling to remove his keys from the door as he frowned and yelled:

"Rivener! Why is the door unlocked? Didn't I tell you to keep it- Oh! Isi!" Aph blinked in susprise, closing the door behind him and smiling as he removed his coat, revealing the new uniform underneath; a bland-looking smock with the Carafe's logo on the pocket. Aph hadn't noticed the boy's face yet. "How long have you been here? I hope Rivener was keeping you company?"

"She adopted me when I was 7. I'm 14 now. She lost her marbles right after she adopted me, she was sane then." Isi was saying as he sat down in the couch and hugged his crutches to him right before the door jiggled and jingled. Turning to the door as it opened, Isi lifted his brows with anticipation and straightened his back. His bated breath was released when Isi watched with relief as Aphismet stepped in from the midnight chill.

Beauregard looked longingly at the door as it opened and it looked like he was going to brace himself for the escape, but then Aphismet closed it. Slumping a bit in the air, the whale retired to the next best thing: Rivener. Floating happily around the raevan's head, Beauregard crooned in delight.

"Halloa, Aphismet, I hope I'm not intruding. I haven't been here long, I only just sat down. Rivener's been hosting me, you taught him well." Isi had no idea if Aphismet taught him to do that or not, but he hoped it was a compliment either way.

Rivener would have found that comment insulting, insinuating that Aph had anything to do with rearing him made Rivener gag. Luckily, Riv had stopped paying attention pretty much as soon as Aphismet walked in; apparently, Aphismet would take over the lead of "hero" in this story, not that there seemed to be much "hero-ing" to be done... Isi mostly needed someone to listen, and Rivener was sure he'd heard the meatiest part already. Besides, Beauregard was now flitting around Riv's head, and the Raevan was utterly charmed, grinning and actually chuckling at times, lifting up a hand to perhaps convince the little whale to let him pet the red skin.

The Frei floated off the sofa and to his favorite chair near the radiator, so that Aph could have a place to sit with the distraught boy. Riv waved the whale over to follow him, hoping it would obey.

Aph walked to the couch and sat, stretching. He still hadn't noticed the boy's bruise, and so he still smiled. "Oh, you're not intruding at all. Don't mind the mess though," Aph said self-consciously as he noticed that all his paintings and easels were up in the corner, on display for the whole world to see... how embarassing. He hoped he could keep the boy's attention from straying in that direction. "As for Rivener's good behavior, you can thank television. I didn't do much raising myself, although I do try to- HOMIGOD, what happened to your face?!" Aph exclaimed, jumping out of his seat, face pale. "Hocrap, let me get you some ice, a cold compress, or maybe you'd better have something hot, like a towel? No, no, not a towel, cold to prevent swelling. I'll be right back!" The man dashed to the kitchen area and flung open the freezer, taking out a coldpack and wrapping it in a dishtowel (a clean one). He then ran back to the boy and offered it, fretting incessantly.

Delighted by the invitation, the red whale rubbed itself into the raevan's hands and narrated Rivener's actions as he walked away and called him to the chair.

"His eyes glittered with expectation and amusement, as the red whale drew near."

Beauregard drifted down into Rivener's lap and began to sing a love ballad.

"I'm bloody fine!" Exclaimed the boy, frightened by Aphismet's sudden burst of worry. He hadn't looked at his face once, so Isi really didn't know what damage had bee done. By Aphismet's reaction, apparently it was something horrible and that scared the boy. The bruise actually spanned from his temple to his jaw bone and along his cheek bone in a weird 'E' looking design (never had an old lady's hand hurt him so, but then again the metal plated gloves she was wearing from the suit of armor in the living room could've done the trick).

"I'm serious, I've been through crap like this before-" The boy was stuttering, "It was only my grandma, you don't need to-" Then the towel wrapped icepack was pushed into his hands. There was no denying it now, Isi thought in silent frustration. In the back of his mind, though, there was that little thought that sighed with relief and looked at the ice pack with gratefulness. Placing it up to the left side of his face, Isi let out a shuddering breath as the cold battled with the dull throbbing fire of the bruise. "Thanks..."

Aph's face was a true portrayal of outrage. "Your grandma did this to you?! B-b-but! But you said you had no family! And, and, this can't be right! She does this often? There's got to be something we can do. Call the cops or something? Report her?" Aph had sat back down when Isi finally took the coldpack, and he had taken a cookie absently from the plate on Isi's lap (not really realising that they were the boy's snacks), crunching a bite from it as he watched the vicitimized boy, waiting for an explanation.

Rivener was delighted when the whale plopped into his lap! He smiled happily and draped one arm around the back of his chair, leaning comfortably. With his other hand he petted Beauregard's strange skin lightly. It was a bit rubbery, how weird! Did real sea-whales have skin like this too?

Content, Riv even allowed himself to hum along to the whale's song, bobbing his head in time with the music. He sooo wanted to keep the little critter for his own!

"Yeah, she did, but she was freaking drunk since her bloody friends probably dropped by while I was gone. She plays pranks on me often, but I'm sure it's no problem...She woke me up and forced me around the house to do chores while she was in her freaking military costume and armored gloves."

Isi actually looked kind of surprised at the alternatives, Aphismet offered him. Cops? Report her? What would happen if they did that? Where would he go? Would he be taken back to the home to be shuffled about in families again? He wasn't old enough yet to be left to his own devices and besides, he really liked the house...Old Maasi was, though, getting more and more screwed up every day. "I...I don't know. She strung me up in trees, hid my crutches, and whatnot...This is only the second time she's hurt me. I'm sure we'll be alright...?"

Beauregard, moved up onto Rivern's chest since there was hardly a lap for him to lay on and he sang the ballad in his deep rumbling base voice. Every so often, he'd insert Rivener's action into the midle of the lyrics he was singing.

"Billie Jean is not my Riv leaned back in contentment lover!
She's just a girl, she The raevan placed his arm behind the chair thinks I am the one...

Rivener let out a quiet giggle (Yes, a giggle, much to his discontent!) as he listened to the whale. Its narratives were mangling the song, but the Frei didn't care. He found it incredibly amusing. Wondering what the whale would do if someone did it right back to it, Rivener brought both hands down and gently grabbed the whale under its flippers, and lifted it into the air playfully, narrating:

"Rivener took the whale gently in his hands and lifted it towards the ceiling, wondering what it would do next!" This was fun!

Aphismet frowned at what Isi was telling him. His mouth hung agape. "Good god, Isi! I know that you didn't have a family very long, so you might not remember what it SHOULD be like, but THAT is definately NOT IT! Someone of your age shouldn't have to take care of a senile old woman who sometimes turns abusive! I don't care what her excuses are!" Aph's lips tightened. "I, I really think we should call the cops. Maybe child services or something."

The man turned his eyes to the cold pack, fussing with it, checking the temperature of it as Isi still held it to his head. Anything to avoid looking directly at the kid's face while he said the next. "If, if you want, I um... I could let you stay with me instead? I-If that's a good solution for you, that is. A-and there's not much place here, s-so you'd have to sleep on the couch, or I have a spare mattress..."

Aph was hoping he wouldn't get laughed at. He was hoping he might have found some kind of family, even if it wasn't a real one. He hoped that perhaps he wouldn't be alone so much anymore, and that he might have found someone around whom he didn't feel so stupid all the time.
