There are plenty of good arts and music colleges that offer Japanese as well, I expect. You can use all sorts of specialized sites on the net (princetonreview.com or collegeboard.com among others) to look up things like that. Also, you can go to the websites of universities that you're interested in and look at their various departments, majors, and course offerings. Japanese is a big language, and most schools that I have seen offer it, if not as a major or minor then at least as a course. (Of course, I'm looking at international studies and such, so that would affect it, but still...) And there are arts and music colleges in Japan, too, of course. Only, you probably will have to be able to speak VERY good Japanese first, in order to get in. Remember, you've got plenty of time, so take your time and look carefully at schools to find ones that really match your interests welll.

thanks! ill definitely be checking those sites out ^_^ and yeah, i thought about going to one in japan too but then as you said, i'd need to know the language very well to get in. watching subbed anime can only teach you so much, after all! but i do understand more than i can actually say... cuz i remember what some things sound like, but not how to say them myself (which is weird cuz my brain usually works the other way around)... oh well! i fully intend to learn japanese and/or more to japan (which would inevitably lead TO learning it if i'm there long enough...) ~Rin

Another thing that REALLY helps with learning the language is to go and study abroad for a year. http://www.yfu.org is the site of the program that I am here with. Are you in America? If so, there is a scholarship called the Japan US Mutual Understanding Program for the 21st Century, which is AWESOME. If you want me to tell you more about it, just PM me... I don't guarantee that you will be fluent or be able to read all that well, but unless you go home early or don't study or try AT ALL, you'll learn at least your kana and a couple hundred kanji, and be able to have a decent conversation, even if you don't study before coming. (Though if your high school offers it, take it, of course.) And there's no way that you would ever learn enough Japanese from watching anime that you'd be able to study at university in Japan (at a normal one, not an international one). A. The vocabulary used is low. B. The grammar and such is terrible. C. You cannot learn to read or write Japanese. Good luck, though. And just ask if you have any questions.

One place pops into mind- Oberlin.
It's one of the premiere Liberal Arts Schools, and juliard's number 1 rival when it comes to the conservatory of music last I checked. They have an amazing Asian Studies department, and offer Japanese.
I'm looking into aplying there as a visual arts major next year.
On the YFU. I did that lasy year. It was AMAZING. My writing didn't improve much, but my speaking skills improved to no end. I was a summer student, for 6 weeks, on the Japan America Friendship scholarship.
