Aphismet reached up with mitten-wrapped hands, and pulled his hat down lower, covering his ears with the floppy fur-lined flaps. He smiled as the breath puffed out of his mouth with every breath, a tiny little cloud in the twilight. In front of him, Aph was watching his charge, well-warmed in a fluffy red coat, floating from one side of the sidewalk to the other, taking picture after picture of things covered in snow; cars, streetlights, doorsteps.
Riv was wearing a rare smile as well, looking at every picture he took on the LCD screen. He was ready for when his batteries would eventually run out; his poufy pockets were full of extras. The Frei disliked the cold intensely, and would always rather sit under a warm lamp (just like Cuddles used to, Aphismet always muttered wistfully), but with his new coat and new gloves, Rivener felt well enough to stay outside for hours. He was intending to walk about until he couldn't stand it anymore, and that would be a while. Good thing Aph didn't mind.
Aphismet was thankful for the long walks. It gave him an opportunity to think about his life, and about what he should be doing with it. It also made Rivener happy, and lately the Frei had been much nicer to him... Growing up, perhaps? Another bonus was that this exercise, which now occurred daily, would keep the two of them in shape.
Neither male paid any attention to the people who looked; they were both too preoccupied with their own things to bother about folks who stared. The only attention Riv paid to them was when he felt like taking a picture with people in it; he would then look up and smile winningly, lift his camera, and click. Immediately after, Riv would ignore them again, and move on.
This way it continued, as the two walked down Durem's streets.

On a cold night such as this, one would imagined that their walk would've gone on peacefully. Tonight was just...Not the night for a quiet evening with the snow. As the two walking companions turned around a corner, a small body slammed into Aphismet and made a startled noise.
"Can't get a lick of peace...Anywhere! I knew I should've have...Jeez!"
The hobbling boy crashed into Aphy and he floudered for a brief moment on the ice. Feeling surprised after the crash, Isi Etul wobbled upon his weak legs and couldn't get his balance back. He had been walking so quick with his frustration that control had been the least of his worries. A second later, Isi felt his crutches slip out from underneath his arms on the frozen ground and without his crutches, Isi knew he couldn't stand for long. Then he feet slipped out from underneath him. With a cry, he fell back in an array of flying limbs and his head, thankfully, slammed down on a cushiony lump of snow.
Moaning, Isi blinked up at the spinning stars and lifted his head from the cold snow to look at who he had run into.

"Oh, god!" Aphismet cried out, startled, as he watched the boy fall. Too late, the man had the reflex of reaching out to keep the boy from falling; Aph grasped at empty air as Isi fluffed into the snowpile.
Riv spun around at Aph's outcry, and spotted the young man in the snow. The Frei tilted his head. He'd never seen a young man with crutches like that in real life! How interesting! Floating closer, unconcerned about helping, Rivener lifted his camera, peered at the LCD screen, and snapped a picture.
The flash surprised Aph as he was crouching, proffering a hand to the other. "Riv!" Aph frowned over his shoulder. "That's rude! Help me get him up, would you?" The pizzamaker turned his head back to the boy. "I'm terribly sorry! I wasn't watching where I was going at all..." Aph placed his hands on one of the boy's arms and began pulling him up slowly.
Riv sighed, tucked his camera away in a pocket, and floated closer. With a strong, sure grip, Rivener grabbed the other arm and lifted the boy to his feet easily. He was so much stronger than he thought he was! Wondering at himself and at what else he might not know, Riv left the boy standing weakly and reached down for the crutches, handing them to the boy.

Wobbling precariously on his weak legs, the boy accidently leaned to one side and clutched at Aphismet's arm as he crutches were hoisted up, "Thank you," he wheezed, reaching for his crutches from the frei's hands. As soon as he got the crutches fixed underneath his ams again, and his feet steady, Isi continued, "I'm sorry, that was my fault, I didn't see where I was going, I was angry, and I...Applesauce, you have a raevan!"
Isi had only met one other raevan and their owner before (Roux was an interesting raevan and Isi really enjoyed talking with Chloe). Of course there was Kumoru, but his raevan hadn't developed yet. Now, he had bumped into another raevon owner in the streets of Durem!

Aphismet had nearly toppled over when the boy suddenly grabbed at him for balance. He smiled uneasily at the boy's explanation, not sure that it was the boy's fault at all; if Aph had been paying more attention, he would have been able to avoid the kid.
Then, that strange exclamation. Aph was amazed at how many people he randomly ran into, who knew about Raevans. "Err, yes..." Aph dusted himself and straightened his coat once the boy let go. "Th-this is Rivener. I'm Aphismet, his guardian... And, and you are?" Aph hoped he wasn't being rude, and he hoped Riv would take the hint and say something, not just stand there and take pictured.
As it was, Rivener was already standing there taking pictures. He zoomed in on the boy's crutches. Wow, a real cripple! He'd ever only seen them on television. The boy seemed to be impressed by the Scorpion Frei, and so Rivener graced him with a smile. "Hello," he volunteered, without Aph even having to look at him. He then returned to snapping more photos, zooming out to include aph with the boy, showcasing their height differences... The Raevan floated around the two slowly, focused on his LCD screen, looking for the best framing.

The anger that had been boiling in the boy's chest had now disappeared. Isi was mad at Old Maasi for setting his whale free into nature. He had been spending all afternoon in the cold looking for the elusive Beauregard, but the singing whale was no where to be found. Durem was his last place to check since it was near to his home, and Isi had been making his last route around the block, swearing as he went. After running into these two people, all of that anger mysteriously disappeared and Isi was overwhelmed with curiosity and wonder.
"I am Isi Etul. I'm a fellow raevan owner!" the boy replied. His stormy grey eyes glanced once at the floating frei, furrowing a brow as Rivener orbited around them with a camera. "Uh..." the boy said slowly with a chuckle, "Halloa, to you too."
Shifting his wooden supports again, Isi moved himself to a spot where the ground was less slippery and he leaned himself on his crutches.

Rivener grinned as he found the perfect framing, now that the boy had moved. "Wonderful, don't move," the Frei whispered, trying to capture the moment between the two Raevan owners, waiting until they were relaxed to take the picture. Riv could be strangely patient when it came to this. He settled in to wait as long as it would take.
Aph shyly advanced to the boy's side, highly aware of the camera pointed at him. He kept looking over at his charge, waiting for the flash, but it just wouldn't come. "Erm, fellow Raevan owner? I, I didn't see you at the party... You must be recent? Wh-where is your Frei, then, if I may ask?" Aph started looking around, trying to spot a floating torso. Instead, Aph frowned in puzzled amazement as he spotted something completely different, up on the fire escape of a nearby building.
"Is... Is that a tiny WHALE flying around?!" Aph pointed, making a strange face.
Riv's camera flashed.

"I am recent. No, my frei hasn't been developed," Isi made a funny face, testing out the word as he spoke, "if that's the right word, yet. I've captured the soul, it's turned in, and everything's ready, but I believe the tanks are already full. You..."
But then Aphismet pointed dramatically and Isi was able to spin around just in time to watch as the mischievious whale floated up the side of the building and onto the top roof of a 13-story building with a restraunt at the top. Isi's 'good-mannered pleasant' disposition suddenly evaporated and he let loose of a irritated growl, slapping his palm onto his forehead.
"Freaking fantastic!" he moaned. Then, taking his hand to his mouth, Isi shouted, "BEAUREGARD! GET DOWN HERE!"
The whale didn't reply. Only the distant song of In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins could be heard drifting on the wind from the top of the building.
"Bloody great, now I have to go up there and get him," Isi groaned, his cheeks flushed the anger and the cold, moving his stiff crutches, the crippled boy slowly made his way for the building entrance, "and with my luck, he'll fly to the next building as soon as I get up there..."
Suddenly, an idea hit Isi just like a wet snowball behind the ear. Turning to his newly aquainted friends, Isi asked awkwardly, "Do you have time? I could use some help trying to catch that hydrogen filled fish."

Aph forgot his embarrasment at being caught on camera looking stupid, when the boy yelled out to the flying whale. It was perhaps a pet of the boy's? What a weird creature! ...then again, should he really be making such judgements, he who had a flying torso for a child?
When the boy asked for their help, Aph smiled kindly. THIS he could do. "I'd be happy to help! I don't imagine it would be easy for you to get up there... H-how are we going to get that thing, er, Beauregard -to come down from there, once we get up? Is it... Is it tame? C-can we grab it? Or will it bite us?"
"Whales don't have teeth, Aphi," Rivener said. Of course, he was assuming that was not a tiny KILLER whale, just a regular whale. Riv, feeling gracious now that he had snapped such an interesting photograph, floated towards the building. "I can get it!"
"Don't poison it!" Aph called out immediately, before Riv even crossed the street.
The Frei looked back, annoyed. "But it would be so much easier to get the thing if it was sedated!"
"NO POISON!" Aph screeched almost hysterically. He turned to the boy. "We better get up there before that thing provokes Rivener... it's not the type of, em... of Whale to do that, is it?" He asked as he crouched, offering a piggy back ride so they could rush over to, and up, the fire escape.

"Poison? Rivener can poison things?" asked Isi with surprise. He looked worriedly up at the 13th floor of the building and he continued on without an answer, "That building has a helicopter landing, so I'm sure they'll let us up there to get him. Beauregard...Well, I haven't found out yet. He was a present from Lab 305 but he's more of a flying iPod than a whale, really. And he narrarates things. My old hag of an adopted grandmother set him loose." He said that last part with liquid loathing.
Furrowing his brows again as the man offered him a piggy back ride, Isi found himself at an interesting internal battle. Usually, he didn't accept help from people. In fact, he yelled at them scathingly if they tried to even give him charity. He didn't accept anything. Isi guessed it was a matter of pride and something else, but...Now this man was offering him a piggy back ride. If this was a different time with different circumstances, Isi would've black slapped Aphismet and told him what he told all the other would-be charity givers. However, Beauregard was in possible danger and this was no time to be childish.
Finally breaking free from his internal battle, Isi climbed awkwardly onto the man's back and shyly folded his crutches into travel-size bundles and put them into his backpack. Now he was thankful for his Eric the Red Day gift from his psycho Grandma. He never thought foldable crutches would come in handy.
"Okay, I'm ready," Isi assured Aphismet after a few moments, "Uh...Thanks for being my legs."
Isi decided, ght then and there, that Aph was going to be the only man he accepted charity from.

Aph had honestly never even considered that he might be insulting the poor boy; he was only concerned with running up those stairs, and the fact was that the young boy would not be able to keep up. As soon as Isi was ready, Aphismet bolted across the street and slapped his hands onto the cold metal fire escape, thankful for his warm mittens.
"Hold on! I'm going to try and get up here really fast, so hold on tight!" Aph scrurried up the ladder and onto the first landing, and then was able to grab poor Isi's legs again before running up the clanking steps, taking a few two at a time. He truly hoped he got up there on time, and that Rivener would behave! "Riv's soul is that of a scorpion," Aph explained, his breath shallow, as he climbed the stairs. Isi should know what they're dealing with. "He's pretty aggressive sometimes, and he doesn't really hesitate to poison things, normally... I hope he's learned not to do that when I ask him!" Aph mostly whispered the last, but seeing as Isi's face was near enough to Aph's own, he probably heard it.
During this time, Rivener had floated to the front of the building, and with a languig flap of his wing (which had its own little hole cut out of the thick coat, so that he could still use it! How clever of Aph.) the Frei flew upwards.
For a moment, Rivener forgot what he was going up for. He'd never really FLOWN before, now that he thought about it. He hadn't even considered that he wouldn't be able to, he just knew how! And now that he was airborne, not just "floating", he found the feeling extremely disagreeable. He preferred the stone, the solid ground. Rivener frowned. His good mood was evaporating by the second.
He reached the top quickly enough, and breathed a sigh of relief as he found himself "on solid ground" again. He then frowned again, and looked about... where was that music coming from? Finally, he located its source: the little floating whale, wearing a bowtie, was serenading him skillfully. Riv lifted an eyebrow. "What the hell."

Isi clung gently to the man, his weak legs about his waist and his arms locked around the man's neck with his cheek pressed to the back of Aphismet's shoulder. The only time he was given a piggy back ride before was when Old Maasi was taking him away from swollen river bed when he had run away from home with pneumonia and back home before he got too chilled. Why was it that he was always given a piggy back ride during a time of desperate measures? Isi didn't believe that someone had ever given him a piggy back ride for fun. It was always out of necessity.
After a particularly quick lurch, Isi felt himself slipping and he gripped tighter onto Aph, "Oh, a scorpion, that's pretty neat. How long have you had him?" He replied casually, "Four...Five. We're on the fifth floor, now."
The red whale basked in the lightly falling snow in all his striped glory.
"I've been waiting for this moment, all my life, hold on I can feel it coming in the air tonight, hold on And I've been waiting for this moment all my life, hold on, hold on...
I remember don't worry! How could I forget it's the first time, the last time we ever met But I know the reason why, you kept this silence up!"
Beauregard was in the middle of the song, nearing to the end of Phil Collin's solo, just before the crazy drum sequence. The red whale was floating, like a dream, near the big 'h' painted on the center of the building roof.

Rivener's eyebrow quirked even higher as the song continued, and the serenade turned into a little makeshift show. The whale was floating about, obviously enjoying the audience... Rivener chuckled. What a fun whale!
The Frei quickly took out his camera, and looked around the top for that "film clip" button he'd used that one time... Ah, there it is! With an amused smile, Riv pressed the little button and began filming the whale's wonderful performance. Now, if this wasn't a worthy event to immortalize, Riv didn't know what was! He wondered what Roux would say when he showed him a singing, flying whale.
Aph was amazed at how well he was doing, physically that is. Already on the sixth floor and he wasn't completely out of breath yet! All these hours of walking around were really paying off, apparently!
"I've had him for a little under a year," Aph replied between deep breaths. "He's still a child. Which soul did you capture for creating your Raevan? And what kind of fel essence did you receive from Dr Kyou?" He was asking all these questions and being rather chatty, despite the fact that he had a hard time speaking. He wondered why? Maybe to take his mind off the horrible things Rivener was no doubt doing to that poor little Whale-creature...

The whale finished its rendition of 'In the Air Tonight' and he took a quick bow before the camera. It's little blue eyes were filled with delight and it straightened it's little bow tie. Then, without a moment's lapse, Beauregard burst into Hero by that one hispanic dude.
Would you dance if I asked you to dance? Would you run and never look back? Would you cry if you saw me crying? Would you save my soul tonight?
I CAN BE YOUR HERO, BABY! I CAN KISS AWAY THE PAIN! I WILL STAND BY YOU FOREVER! You...Can...Take...My breath away...
"Almost a year now! Wow...Well, my not so bright Grandmother accidently caught the soul for me. I intended on capturing a firefly soul, but she ended up catching a will-o-the-wisp instead and placed the jar next to the soul bottle. Good fortune on my part she didn't capture something else," the crippled boy replied, "Dr. Kyou gave me the essence of a Yggdrasil leaf that floats and doesn't wither and it has red stains on it." Isi slipped a little farther on Aph's back. Gravity was doing its part by pulling more on the boy's body and his grip was slipping also. He squeakedin panic, feeling himself getting closer to falling down the stairwell off the man's back, "Aphismet, I'm falling!"
