She had it! She had a scent and it rang so familiar that it drove her from her sleep and once again away from River. Her body trembled with eager rage and her nostrils were flared wide as if to inhale the very wolf whose scent so enticed her.
It was a strange scent none-the-less, mingled with that of her child and that of something else. Something that was not quite wolf. Her muzzle wrinkled in a snarl as she tracked the poor unsuspecting victim through the trees. With her belly low to the ground the mottled female moved with incredible stealth. The excitement of the hunt had blocked out any pains and for the first time in a good few days the wolf moved fluidly. She looked young again, as if she had been given a new life. Yet there was something in her eyes, etched into her face, that was not quite sane.
Her smile was evil and malicious and the snarl that wrinkled her nose and tugged the lips away from her fangs was simply horrific to look upon.
The scent wound between the skeletal trees, past the glade and out into the sparse trees that marked the edge of the forest. Perfect. With no cover she was sure to come across the wolf sooner or later.
Hackles bristled and as she drew out from cover she instinctly lowered, piercing dark eyes scanning the area around her.
The victim was hard to miss.
He stood looking somewhat confused with his forepaws raised upon a pile of rocks. His head was lowered as he peered down into the rocky gorge he had come across and his expression was somewhat hesitant. Beyond the gorge the grass dissapeared into another thick section of the forest, a place Sirena knew well. For it was in that direction that she had lived and raised her four children with her mate. It was there her life had come to an end.
However the appearance of this young male shocked the wolfess considerably. He looked so much like herself it was scary. For as he turned she saw for herself the white face stripe that marked her own face. His fur danced in a simailr pattern to her own, though it was as black as his grandfather's. His eyes too were those of her beloved mate.
Her heart shuddered but no life came to it.
How dare this wolf masquerade as us when he has no right? She snapped quietly to herself, bristling in anger. He shall pay for this. He shall pay for it. And with these whispered words, that trembled with rage, she stood and strode forwards.
Her limp returned slightly but she ignored it, holding her head and tail high as she drew nearer.
You. You who looks like me. Who are you? Her voice was bitter and cold.
Fluke almost leapt from his hide at the sudden voice behind him and whipped around to face his adversary. For a moment his hind legs slipped down into the gorge and he momentarily struggled to find his footing.
M-meh? He stuttered, ears flattening and tail tucking between his legs. He was smart but he was weak. His body was pathetic in a physical sense - even compared to the aged old girl he looked upon.
Yet anything else he would have said was wiped clean from his tongue as he set eyes upon her. For she did indeed resemble him in every way. It was remarkable at how similar they were.
I'm Fluke. He finally replied, and who migh' yoo bee? His accent was not really distinguishable. It was so muddled that it could only be described as 'Flukish'.
Me? Sirena sniffed, I am the one who has come to take your life.

Fluke's nervous laughter filled the silence, but after anothe rsecond it was gone, replaced by his apprehensive words. A li'l bit dramatic, eh?
Sirena growled in reply and took a step forwards, there was only one wolf who had dared speak to her like that when she was younger.
Orphen.
So this little runt was the offspring of that disgusting creature? The female who had shown so much promise and then let her down at the last moment. Oh she would hjave fun snatching this little beast from the world and then watchign her daughter suffer.
So, little son of Orphen, tell me, where is your mother now a days? She laughed at the surprise on his face, the sound returning to a growl.
How do yeh know ma mother?
Use your brain. Have you not noticed the similairities in our appearances? Our scents? We are of the same blood though I hate to admit it. She took another step forward and Fluke whined.
Wha' are yoo then? Ma Grandma? He sniffed, I dunno where mother is, I left her cos she dun wan' meh around.
So she turns on me and her very own son. I see she hasn't changed in the past years. Don't worry little one, she'll get what's comign to her. After I've done with you that is.
Fluke bristled andgave another whimper, lowering his head to look at Ren through sorrowful eyes. He was scared and he hoped his 'puppy-eyed' look would help...somehow. Yoo dun talk no sense. Wha' did ma mother doo, eh?
She turned on me, turned on her own mother. They all did, all four of them. Now I will return the favour. I will wipe those traitorous whelps from the world...and their offspring. This time she lunged, her jaws snapping at the air where Fluke had just been standing.
Luckily the gangly male was quick on his paws and he had been able to leap sideways, away from the teeth that threatened to tear out his throat. If he could just get her to tire out he could make a dash for it, he was sure!
Sirena shook her head and turned to fix her eyes upon him again. As far as she was concerned he was as good as dead.
The fight had only just begun.

So many thoughts raced through Fluke's mind, most situated around his mother and what she could have done to create this monster before him. This wolf was insane, even he could tell that. How could he possibly escape the clutches of an insane wolfess who seemed to be intent on killing him? What was he going to do!?
He whimpered again and backed up, head low to the ground and ears pinned right back out of the way of flying teeth.
Sirena's next lunge took the young male completely by surprise and with a yelp he leapt upwards, all four paws leaving the ground. She crashed into his forepaws and for a moment the two bodies became entangled. The female bristled and snarled, trying to get her teeth fixed on something.
Fluke's legs flailed in sheer terror as he tried to free himself and get away from the ground that seemed to be holding him in place. Yet even as he writhed he knew that he was trapped. The female's body held him to the ground and her waiting jaws were open in preparation to bite.
In his final attempt to escape Fluke did the only thing he could think possible. He attacked back. The attempt was feeble, yet the kick to Sirena's muzzle surprised her enough that he was able to wriggle free. Well...almost.
Her teeth finally clacked down onto the end of his tail, locking together like the metallic jaws of a wolf trap. A lance of pain rippled down the length of Fluke's body and the more he struggled the more it hurt.
He tugged and tugged and finally with a tearing sound came free. Leaping sideways in a skittish manner as if the ground were hot.
Sirena spat the tuft of fur onto the ground and continued to follow. She was playing with him, watching him cower and whimper whilst she poked at him. Then when his pain was unbearable she would finish it. A quick bite to the throat and that would be it.
The more you fight the more it hurts little one. She cooed, circling closer.
Yer think I'll give up so easily? Fluke scoffed, watching her circle to the left with a frightened gaze. His legs trembled and again she dove towards him, driving him back towards the gorge.
She planned to make that gorge his death bed.
So you do have some courage. Sirena replied, though it was uncertain whether the comment was genuine. Ashame then that courage will do you no good here. Then swinging outwards with surprising speed she crashed into the younger wolf and sent him hurtling across the ground.
The breath was knocked from his lungs and even as he lay there gasping with his eyes closed he sensed her draw closer.
Her shadow fell upon him.

His body convulsed with fear and as he felt Sirena's presence lingering over him he could not help but open his eyes. Little gold slithers appeared as he glanced warily up into his attackers face. Maybe this was some terrible nightmare and when he looked there would be nothing.
Sadly this was not to be.
Instead of nothing, as he had hoped, he saw only a mouthful of vicious teeth lunging at him. He struggled to get to his feet, pulling himself away from her attack just in time to protect his face. But sadly not quick enough toprotect his side.
She plummeted into it with an incredible force, again knocking the breath from him. He coughed painfully, the racking sound shuddering through his body. The worst was to come, for then her jaws found a place to lock upon and teeth sunk into fur and flesh.
Blood spilled down his sides, sticky and warm as it moulded into his fur and splattered into the female's face. He tried to tug away but the pain exploded so fiercely that his vision doubled and he almost fainted. Fluke might have been weak pohysical but his mind was strong and he battled against the feeling, desperate to survive.
He didn't want to die!
So he did the only thing possible. He craned his head towards her, a snarl at his maw as he lunged for Ren's own neck. He grabbed her scruff with some force, holding the loose skin and fur with a grip that surprised even himself.
Apparently this took his attacker by surprise too. She released him almost instantly, growling like a mighty beast as she thrust her own jaws. Again she caught him, this time by the neck.
Now the two wolves were locked together, holding onto one another by their teeth, waiting to see whose jaw weakened first. Sirena gave a vicious tug but Fluke held on, determined to stay attached until he had enough breath to make a run for it.
The plan seemed like it might work, that was until Sirena gave a sudden move that took him by surprise. She forced herself away from him and by doing so his teeth slipped free. Fluke could have sworn his jaw cracked but it seemed the sound had just been in his mind.
The moment Sirena got free, Fluke struggled to regain some good footing, swinging sideways to dodge another lunge. His ears were flattened and his tail was tucked up against his belly, yet he knew that he would not yet be able to run. She still had the devil's look about her and he was sure that in this rage she would catch him no matter how fast he was.
P-please, dun hurt meh. He begged.
A wolf of no pride. Sirena's snorted the blood from her nose and advanced again. She did indeed look like a devil. Fluke's blood had stained her white fur and each tooth seemed to be fringed in a little red coat. You do not deserve to live. And with that she lunged again, forepaws extending as she lowered herself.
Again Fluke was too slow and his legs were torn from under him.
Using her brute force Sirena twisted her body and drove herself against him with the whole of one side. Fluke's howl of terror reverberated in her ears as he toppled over the side of the cliff, fresh blood spilling from the open wound in his side.
Was it over?

Still growling deep within her chest, Sirena moved forwards to stand at the verge of the rocky gorge. There she stood the victor, looming down upon the natural crevice that seemed to submit to her wrath. Her muscles bunched as her eyes traced ther rocky sides down into it's basin where the scraggly wolf lay.
He was motionless, sprawled out on the dusty, blood spattered ground and as far as she could tell, very much dead.
Almost instantly the rage and strength that had possessed her seemed to leave. Slowly she crumpled to the ground, sides heaving as she tried to gain control. Her body ached with renewed strength and as she turned away from Fluke's early grave she hoped she'd be able to gain enough strength to return to River. She relied heavily on the female for protection and in her weakened state it wouldn't be good to bump into any strangers.
One down... She whispered to herself. Then slowly she turned and limped off, a small smile on her face.
Down in the gorge Fluke twitched, his eyes opening once before falling closed. They did not open again.
