It was wet. Rain had poured all night. Puddles were littered all over the ground. Nelos didn't bother to hide her feelings.

"Moooommy!" She wailed holding up a paw in disdain.

It wasn't that she hated being dirty, well, she did, but it was more so that she didn't like being wet. It gave her a terrible feeling. Soggy, damp. Cold. Wet was definately not her favorite condition.

Looking impatiently over her shoulder she waited for her mother to come rescue her. Another thing she greatly disliked was sharing. Sharing her mother to be exact. Mommy was hers, and no one else's.

So where the heck was she? "Mommy! My feet are wet!"

Echo came almost as if on cue. She was, however, going a bit slowly. Like her daughter, she didn't like the feeling of the mud on her fur, so she didn't want to slip and have the stuff all over her body. And knowing her, if she went too fast she'd soon enough be in the very situation she was looking to avoid.

"Feet are wet," she echoed her daughter, letting the younger wolf know that she was coming in the only way that she really could. Her curse still remained, and she wondered if it would ever be lifted.

"Wet, wet," she said again, shaking out her fur. Even though it wasn't raining at the moment, the air was still heavy with moisture from the rain the night before. It was settling quite uncomfortably in her fur, and she didn't enjoy it one bit.

Finally catching up to Nelos, she nudged her daughter with her nose and then looked about. Why had they come out here in the first place? It was obvious neither of them particularly liked this sort of terrain. "Wet," she mumbled, flicking her ears nervously. She wanted to be back with Logan. Nudging her daughter again, she grunted then proceeded forward.

They had to get away from this mud.

Nelos scowled upwards at the grey clouds that remained even now, almost daring them the let loose their drops on her. Boy, she'd show them if they did. She hated rain.

She liked her mother though. As Echo nudged her Nelos' eyes glinted happily. Mommy was warm, mommy was good. But did mommy have anything to eat?

"Where are we going to go? Where's daddy? Do you see auntie Ophelia anywhere?" Nelos was, sadly, short. Which was to be expected being a puppy and all, but she still liked to know what was going on at a grown-up's level at all times.

Eyes shut tight and face forming into an expression of utter revoltion she tipped toed as carefully as she could through the mud. So far so good, so far so--squish.

Nelos shrieked as she slipped and slid onto her belly in the mud. Holding her nose up high she yelped and attempted to grab hold of her mother's tail.

Echo groaned again, hating the feeling the mud gave her as it nestled in between the pads on her paws. Some of it was beginning to dry and crack, which just made things worse for her. They really needed to get away from this mud. It was nasty!

As Nelos began to ask all sorts of questions, she perked her ears and craned her neck around to peer at the little wolf.

"Going to.." she began, but she couldn't finish it correctly. Sadly, this happened far too many times for her to keep accurate track of. Frowning, she shook out her fur again. Darn rain. "Ophelia," she echoed, twitching her tail. Where was her twin sister? Probably worry about Echo and Nelos, as she always did.

Taking another step forward, she managed to slip just as her daughter screamed, her eyes wide with fear and surprise. Mud all over her now, she grumbled. Today wasn't a good day.

Glancing at her daughter, she tilted her head. It seemed she had taken quite the fall as well. Moving quickly, or as quickly as she could in mud, the adult nudged the younger one again then proceeded to pick her up by the muddy scruff. She grunted, then moved on again.

Where to go... somewhere away from this mud.

Sighing contently Nelos turned her attention towards herself. This was much better. No more mud! She just had to get rid of the gunky mud that was all over her.

Licking a paw she looked around at the trees. Mud tasted nasty. Icky nasty. Tasted like wet dirt!

"The trees look sad," she cooed. Really, she enjoyed talking very very much. "The bushes must have been thirsty. Right? Don't they get their food from the wet?"

"Ew, I don't eat the wet, mommy." She added and stuck her tongue out. The orange pup wondered if anyone besides plants made their food from water. Probably not. It was gros gros gros.

She eyed a family of birds nestled in a hole in a tree.

"I'm going to catch a bird someday and eat it."

As her daughter talked on about random things, it soothed the feelings of her mother. Echo rather liked to hear others talk, mostly because she couldn't do it on her own. It also let her know that she wasn't alone and it helped to keep away eerie silence.

"Sad?" she mumbled through a mouthful of puppy fur. She glanced at one of the trees as it was passed. She couldn't really see anything in the tree, it was just a tree. Did Nelos see something that her eyes were blind to? Maybe it was a puppy thing. Had she seen expressions in the trees when she was that age? She couldn't remember. Her head ached.

Stopping momentarily, she put her front paws together, then set the little female down upon her paws. It wasn't much, but at least it could keep some of the mud off of her.

"Don't eat wet," she agreed absently, nodding her head. They drank wet. But she couldn't say that, so she merely pushed it from her mind.

"Eat it?" she frowned, shaking her head. Nelos was so long and already she was saying things like that! Where did she learn such foul behavior? It must be from some daring little pup she met somewhere some day that she wasn't with any her mother, father, or aunt. She frowned again.

"Someday." Picking up her daughter, she continued on.

"Yep yep. Someday when I'm big like you." She glanced upwards with an adoring smile as she sat a moment on her mother's front feet.

Mommy was really good at keeping the mud away!

"And someday," she went on feeling inspired by her own voice. "I'm going to have a big family. And we're going to catch birds, and stuff. And and," she paused thinking. "and then I'll find someone who will catch all the birds for us."

She nodded enthusiastically.

"Yep yep! Then we won't have to go out in the mud. And you won't have to go in the mud, mommy. And we'll still have birds. And Auntie Ophelia will talk all the mud into going away. So we'll never have mud again."

Nelos rather liked the idea. Now she just had to figure out how to make it work. Mommy would be so happy if she didn't have to do anything, right?

Echo smiled.

'Someday when I'm big like you.'

Just the mere sound of that sentence coming from her daughter made her heart glow with pride. She had been afraid at first, when she had just found out she had been pregnant, but now she loved it. Motherhood wasn't so bad, probably because she was different than her parents in the way that she had offspring that actually liked her.

Listening to her continuous babbles, her tail slowly began to wag. The mud was forgotten as she listened to the 'dreams' of her daughter. The way that she wanted to grow up to do somehting with herself and to be great in her own way, that was enough to just make her smile. She couldn't wait to watch her daughter grow up. She would be a fine adult female one day, that was for certain. She would be much more successful in her life than her mother.

Setting Nelos down on her paws as she had before, she turned her head and looked all around. Even though she had lived here for quite a while, she still couldn't remember how to navigate these darn forests. Everything looked the same.

"Never have mud again," she sighed, wishing that could really happen. But she had seen enough rain in her life to know that it wasn't ever going to completely go away.

Picking up Nelos again, she continued on, but this time in the direction where she thought there was a small shelter of sorts, maybe a cave. They wouldn't stay there for long, merely rest and let their fur dry out a little. Maybe the mud would dry out a little as well, although she highly doubted anything drastic would happen with it.

Nelos had never wondered if there were other wolves than her mother, father, and aunt. But in just the short time that they'd gone out walking in the mud the idea had occured to her that there just had to be other wolves.

And if there were other wolves that meant there were other mommies and daddies and aunts. Could aunts ever become mommies? She didn't think so. But it was always best to check. "Auntie Ophelia isn't a mommy, is she?"

Well if Auntie had babies like Nelos then what did that make them? There was only one Nelos. That was for sure. There just couldn't be more of her.

"I'm going to have little Nelos' someday, and they'll look just like you mommy! They'll be brown, and they'll listen to me talk, and they'll have spots."

Just. Like. Her.

But did she need to be married first? The little girl decided she would simply marry her daddy, and share him with her mommy. That would work.

Finding a nice little cave, not more than three feet back, Echo set down her daughter carefully on the stone floor. She shook out her fur, flinging away most of the mud, then afterwards plopped down on the ground and curled protectively around the small pup.

Continuing to listen to her daughter's babbles, she smiled and settled her head down upon her paws, her cranium leaned over slightly so that she could look at Nelos.

"Ophelia isn't a mommy," she repeated, shaking her head slightly. Her twin didn't seem like she would ever settle down with a male and start a family. She seemed too preoccupied caring for her litte twin (Echo) and her new niece. She sighed. She had sometimes thought of herself as a burden to her older sister, and she wondered if maybe she was the sole reason why Ophelia seemed to hold herself back. She'd have to talk with her soon.

At the mention of little Nelos', the adult's eyes widened slightly. Where did she learn all of this from? Eating birds, making babies.. it was something not even Echo completely understood.

"Brown spots, talk," she mumbled, moving her head and licking away the top layer of mud that was clinging to her daughter's short, soft puppy fur.

Nelos made a silly sound in her throat that remotely resembled a purr. Eyes shut contently she stretched herself out comfortably against her mother.

"Will Auntie Ophelia ever be a mommy?" She asked thoughtfully. Though she wasn't so sure if she'd be very happy with that. She liked having her mommy and auntie all to herself. But maybe she could baby Auntie Ophelia's little Nelos'? Like mommy did to her.

Yes, that could be fun. Mommy seemed to like it. And Nelos herself definately liked it.

With a yawn she began to drift sweetly into sleep with the rythm of her mother licking her. It felt good to get the mud out.

Echo paused in her grooming to think for a moment. Ophelia.. a mother? It didn't seem possible at the moment, but that was probably because Ophelia seemed too absorbed in Nelos and her parents that she didn't seem to have time for a male of her own, let alone a family. It just didn't seem to fit in with their life at the moment.

Shaking her head, she went back to grooming her daughter. "Ever a mommy," she murmured, still shaking her head slightly. It was the best way she could answer the question.

As Nelos seemed to be drifting off, her mother wagged her tail and gave her one last lick before she moved her head to rest on the ground, her body now shaped almost perfectly around her pup. Her only daughter... she wouldn't let her escape so easily, no matter what sort of escape it was.

But she couldn't stay alert forever. The sweet breathing of her daughter made her smile and also allowed her to relax, so much so that she shut her eyes and drifted off into the same sleep... perhaps to dream of the perfect life that she had with those that were most important to her: Nelos, Ophelia, and Logan.
