She was smiling. It had been so long since she had smiled this much. Her tail was swaying behind her as she padded along, she looked beside her and there was Backus, he was coming back, he was staying with her.
Rage felt warm inside, safe, happy that he was coming back, she hoped Phib would let him stay. She prayed that Backus would stay, she wasn't sure what she would do if he left now. The darker half of her would probably want to kill him if he ever tried.
"Almost there, Phib should be around here somewhere..."

He was scared. An emotion that Backus would never admit to feeling. But there it was deep down and snaking its way to his already troubled heart and mind. It wasn't a fear of anything in particular, just a feeling. Stupid feelings. If he could do away with them he most certainly would. But then....well then that would mean the OTHER emotion, the one whose cause was for Rage and Rage only would be non existant. And Backus just couldn't have that. So he would go on being afraid. Continue to feel strange and distant as he padded along with the one who held onto his heart.
Perhaps this Phib person wouldn't let him stay? That would save him the trouble of leaving, but then again....well he didn't want to leave. Not now and not ever. To be apart from Rage would be like....like....
well it would be sheer murder.

Even from the top of the rocky crag, he could hear the ice cracking down below. It was a familiar sound that he’d grown up around- and there was something vaguely nostalgic about that. Although one had to hesitate to ask exactly what memories might have boded for the old king revolving around such things.
The sea was different though. It only froze about twenty feet outwards, but the constant rocking of the water kept it broken and shifting. There were a few seals floating around, having migrated down from the north to stay at the relatively warmer southern areas. He liked watching things from afar, particularly when he did not understand them. He made a habit of never approaching things he didn’t understand if he could help it.
But as it were- a noise struck against his ear, and he turned his head to the side. "Hrm..." He rumbled, and rose up to his feet. Past the trees, he could see the black shape of a pair of wolves approaching. From the scent, he identified the first as Rage. What was she up to now? He thought, and chuckled faintly.

Rage glanced at Backus from the corner of her eye and smiled and nudged his shoulder gently, "Come on and smile, it'll be alright, I promise," she nuzzled his cheek softly and then looked around, for some identification of Phib.
Where was he anyway?
Though she hadn't admitted it to anyone but Nix, though she guessed Phib and Amelie already knew, she saw Phib as a father figure in her eyes, Amelie as her mother. She was close to both, and hoped that Phib and Amelie would allow Backus to stay. Though, their judgment was crucial as always, but she hoped and prayed they would let Backus stay.
"Phib...where are you..." she muttered to herself. It seemed like when she needed to find him, she couldn't.

Backus stayed where he was, only managing a small curl of the lip as she told him to smile. And even that was barely recognizable. Her nuzzling helped, but he still couldn't fight the underlining emotion that he just shouldn't be here. He felt so very foolish. And if this new wolf could tell how silly he felt? What if Rage could even feel it? He glanced over at her with his one red eye and one yellow and decided that she could not. Well in any case if his inner turmoil gave off in reaks then surely they would not accept him.
That made him worry. He wanted to do this for Rage's sake. He really did. And if he wasn't good enough?
Well he didn't know what he'd do.

As it happened with most young creatures, Phib did not find the scene of the two black wolves closely moving together unsurprising. But the fact that it was Rage did cause him to raise his brow somewhat. So this was how she had been keeping her time? He had always found it interesting she’d never paired off with Malik. Perhaps they were too much like siblings. “Ah, good evening.” The old king started, slipping through the bushes and not shrinking back on making himself look imposing. He had taken to Rage much as his own- and if this whole meeting boded what he imagined it did, he’d not have this young punk thinking he had free roam around here.
He really did miss Maya, and it made him loose the look for a moment, and skew his jaw.
“And who might you be?” He asked, directing his eyes to the dark male.

Rage smiled and gave a slight smirk upon her maw when Backus was so silent, trying to seem to smile. It amused her, made her feel like a pup who wanted to tackle him and play. She swayed her tail back and forth and nudged him again and smiled.
Then she heard his voice.
Amber eyes turned to meet the rather large black figure of Phib. Black, Malik...surely Malik would not be too happy with her bringing Backus back here. Perhaps a few might think ti odd, but Rage had her reasons. If Malik had a problem, she would deal with him personally. "Phib," Rage said almost softly, but she wagged her tail and took a few steps closer to him, enough to give him a slight nuzzle against his shoulder. Probably a strange thing to do, but it was like an affection she would show her father when she was young, she thought perhaps Phib might think it strange then.
She hoped he didn't take it the wrong way.
Rage then padded back to stand beside Backus, and she smiled, "Phib, this is Backus, Backus, this is Phib, he's the alpha here..." she almost said 'and my father' as if it was reality. But at least she caught herself, surely Phib might give her strange looks then.
She hoped Backus wouldn't be nervous at all.

Backus tried not to be nervous, but alas he was. Not that he would ever let show it, or at least he would try to hide it as best as possible. He stood his ground, his head held high and his duel colored eyes staring at this new male, trying to show no hint of weakness. But he felt submissive suddenly and he shifted his body as his eyes trickled downward. Gently he moved closer to Rage, as if protecting her, but when he saw her nuzzle this 'Phib' he realized there wasn't really a threat.
At least not to her anyway.
"Backus," he said simply before Rage gave out the introductions anyway. He looked back up, feeling like a small pup in the face of the other wolf, but decided he still wouldn't let that show. "It's nice to meet you, Phib."

Phib watched quietly as the young female rubbed gently against his shoulder. He’d perfected the art of a stone face- and it was quite possibly true that wolves who might not have known him better perhaps though he was always in the constant state of displeasure. But for a moment, he nearly dropped it, and had to look away. She was terribly like Maya. Out of all his sons, his only daughter was the one who haunted him. He saw her a lot in Audi- and a lot in Rage, and in Anya- and almost any female who morals implied he should not be attracted towards. He was saddened, perhaps- but not displease. “Backus,” He repeated for a third time, as both Rage and the wolf himself spoke his name. He was a dark fellow with interesting eyes. He didn’t seem too concerned by his presence; at least until Rage had moved towards him. He had the lingering scent of the black female upon him- and Phib did not doubt they were far from strangers. “It is nice to meet you then,” He responded smoothly. “And now it seems we are introduced. Are you up to some buisness, Rage?" He quirked, allowing a slight grin to crawl across his face.

Rage peered to Backus but kept her face forward, then her eyes settled on Phib again. How to ask? Would he be mad/? Say no? Say she was better with someone he knew himself? Strange feeling this was, to be afraid to ask if Backus could stay.
She wanted him to be able to stay.
"I was wondering well...we were wondering.." she spoke softly, stuttering a bit out of nervousness. How to ask? She was so scared if Phib said no. "Can Backus...stay?" she peered towards Phib fully now. Wondered what Backus would add if anything.

Backus kept his dual colored eyes fixated on the other wolf. When he heard Rage stutter he instantly moved his body closer, as close as he could get even without forcibly knocking her over. He wanted to be there for her, despite the fact that his interest was only held in a facade meant to appease her. When she finished her words he ticked his eyes back to the other male.
"Yes, we were," he said a bit apprehensively. "I wouldn't want to impose of course..."

Phib arched his eyebrows. “Stay?” He rumbled. “Well, I’d be curious to know more about this stay.” Actually, he had already gotten the picture. But he found himself intrigued, and possibly just a bit sadistic- to see where they were going with this. “Indefinitely, for the week, a month-?” The end of his tail thumped once as if to dispel the notion he was displeased.

Rage looked at Phib, tried to figure out if he was mad or just...maybe, poking fun at them both for her bringing Backus here. She wanted him to be able to stay, she didn't want Phib to get mad, reject him, then she would be torn between Backus and Phib and the family she had made for herself.
Inside she was shrinking down...what to do?
"Until..." she looked at Backus, and smiled, "forever...?" she questioned, herself, him, then Phib when she looked at him. Perhaps she should've chose a better word...

Backus knew that he had to do something, for Rage's sake. Something, anything, that would make him look like someone this Phib fellow would have around. The problem was he didn't know WHAT to say. What could HE offer, but he decided to speak anyhow.
"Forever would be nice," he agreed, stepping forward away from Rage and up to Phib. "It wouldn't be just to aloof," he said quickly, "I can work hard, hunt, protect...." he looked back at Rage then turned his head back to Phib, his duel colored eyes firing in intensity. "Where she goes I wanna go."

Phib reposed himself somewhat, seemingly considering the offer- as if he did not have a fairly undiscriminating policy when it came to pack members. But, he figured he might as well let them stew. After all- it wasn’t all that often he got to play the father role anymore, and never to a daughter. Ah, poor Maya. She’d never needed him, he supposed. “Forever is quite a while.” He cautioned. “But I don’t have any problem with it. You may do as you please, I'm sure Rage will trouble you on the specifics of things.”
