I use watercolors, and nothing but watercolors.
I avoid colouring pencils like the plague and prefer natural media to digital.
I started with watercolor pencils, which are rather easy to use, and you can have neat effects with them; blending colors is also easier compared to normal pencil crayons. You also have more control of where the color is going, compared to regular watercolor paints.
I'd give you a step by step, but firstly, I must ask; do you ink your pictures?

What you might want to do, if you're afraid of ruining your originals, is make a photocopy and try coloring on that, It will work better if you ink your drawing first as you'll get a better photocopy. Inking is very important, thats a good skill to get down early on. Just get a pen that puts down a good solid bead of ink. Dont use those crappy bank pens, get some good ballpoints or felt tip pens and trace over your pencil lines. Once you've inked everything, you can use an eraser (I use a kneeded eraser) to erase all your pencil lines. Then you have an inked drawing.
For starters, you may want to try colored pencil. Its a good starter medium. As you get better, you may move on to acrylic paints, water color, markers, or even digital coloring. Its up to you. Maybe see some art you are drawn to and find out what medium the artist is using, then strive to achieve the same results.

I've done that before... ruined a good picture with my colouring >.>
But then I kinda realized that if I outline the picture with like a pen, the colouring is better... I doubt anything I say will help xD

I'm exactly the same way, so i always make a photocopy of my drawing and color the copy, that way if i mess up, i still have the original picture.
oh my gosh! christmas eve i did a drawing and copied it so that i could color it...and then i accidently colored the original!!! and realized half way through when i made a mistake and was trying to erase the colored pencil and the lines disapeared... my sister's friends faces were in utter shock when they wished me merry christmas and i screamed "MOVE!!" and stomped past them to get to my printer to make another copy...i feel really bad about that... sweatdrop so always make sure you color the right one...
anyways, I normally don't ink mine though...i'm to afraid i'll mess it up when i do that... xp sometimes i ink the copy though
i'd say start with using colored pencils on a photocopy and progress from there.
