Guns N' Roses es una banda de hard rock que nació en Los Ángeles, en marzo de 1985. El grupo estaba formado por el cantante Axl Rose, el guitarrista Tracii Guns, el guitarrista Izzy Stradlin, el bajo Ole Beich, y el baterista Rob Gardner. El nombre deriva de la combinación de los seudónimos de Guns y Rose. Su primer concierto tuvo fecha el 26 de marzo de 1985 en el Troubador (Hollywood, California).

Hollywood Rose fue la banda creada por Jeffrey Isabell (Izzy Stradlin) y William Rose (Axl Rose) después de dejar Lafayette, Indiana y establecerse en Los Angeles. Posteriormente se transformaría en una de las bandas más importantes de hard rock de finales de los ochenta e inicios de los noventa: Guns N' Roses.

Los años salvajes (1986-1989)

Este disco significó del debut de Guns N' Roses, la mejor guitarra de ese tiempo y el principio del reinado de Axl Rose. Cuando Tracii y Robbie no asistieron al primer concierto de Guns N' Roses (en Seattle), Duff llamó al guitarrista Slash y al baterista Steven Adler a quienes había conocido recientemente y quienes tocaban en una banda llamada "Road Crew" y les preguntó si querían tocar. Los dos aceptaron y la formación original del grupo terminó. El grupo sacó un nuevo disco producido por ellos llamado Live Like a ?!*@ Suicide, en 1986. Algunas copias del disco llegaron a ejecutivos de Geffen Records que rápidamente contrataron al grupo. Appetite for Destruction, el debut de Guns N' Roses, salió a la venta el 31 de julio de 1987. El disco vendió 20 millones de copias, tuvo tres canciones entre el top 10 ("Welcome to the Jungle", "Sweet Child o' Mine" y "Paradise City"), y alcanzó el número 1 en las listas. Appetite For Destruction es uno de los discos debut más vendidos de la historia. El siguiente lanzamiento de Guns N' Roses fue G N' R Lies, en 1988, que alcanzó el número 2 en las listas. Este disco incluye las 4 canciones de Live Like a ?!*@ Suicide y 4 canciones acústicas entre las que se destacan "Used to love Her" y la controvertida "One in a Million". Contribuyeron con Welcome to the Jungle a la banda sonora de la película La lista negra (en la serie de Harry el sucio) que dio al grupo unos segundos en pantalla en esa película. En 1989, los Guns N' Roses fueron presentados como favoritos por la American Music Award por la canción Pop/Rock Sweet Child O' Mine. En la gala anual de 1989, Duff McKaggan y Slash aparecieron borrachos y usaron un lenguaje duro y certero mientras aceptaban su premio como mejor disco de Heavy Metal por Appetite for Destruction, mejor canción Heavy Metal por Paradise City y mejor canción rock/pop del año por Sweet Child o' Mine.

La evolución, la gloria y la tragedia (1990-1997)

Poco después del lanzamiento de "Lies", durante las primeras grabaciones de "Use Your Illusion", el baterista Steven Adler fue obligado a abandonar la banda por problemas de adicción a las drogas. Otros miembros reconocieron su adicción después de que Axl Rose habló sobre ello en "Mr. Brownstone" durante su actuación previa al concierto de los Rolling Stones. En 1990 Guns N' Roses volvió a los estudios con un nuevo batería, Matt Sorum, y un nuevo teclista, Dizzy Reed, para comenzar en el proyecto más ambicioso del grupo. El 17 de septiembre de 1991 sacaron a la venta Use Your Illusion I y Use Your Illusion II, que subieron al número 2 y número 1 de las listas mundiales respectivamente durante 108 semanas.

Después del lanzamiento de los dos discos de Use Your Illusion, los Guns N' Roses hicieron una gira mundial de 28 meses de duración (en parte de ella giraron con Metallica), durante la cual Izzy Stradlin se fue del grupo y fue sustituido por Gilby Clarke. La gira incluyó el Tributo a Freddie Mercury. Durante ese tiempo, November Rain fue uno de los vídeos más votados en MTV, ganando además el premio de los MTV Video Music Awards en la categoría de mejor vídeo. En la ceremonia tocaron una versión del tema junto con Elton John.

En 1993, Guns N' Roses sacaron una colección de versiones de covers del estilo punk titulada The Spaghetti Incident?. Este disco no tuvo el éxito de los Illusion y la tensión aumentó en el grupo. En 1994 Axl despidió a Gilby Clarke. El mismo año, se unió Paul Huge como reemplazante de Gilby Clarke y el grupo grabó una versión de Sympathy for the Devil, de los Rolling Stones, para la película Entrevista con el vampiro. Muchos miembros comenzaron sus proyectos en solitario (como Slash con Slash's Snakepit y Duff McKagan en los Neurotic Outsiders). En 1996, Slash se marchó del grupo, argumentando diferencias creativas con Axl. En los años siguientes, Duff y Matt también se marcharon, dejando a Axl como único miembro original del grupo.

Chinese Democracy (1998-2006)

En 1998 Axl Rose volvió a los estudios acompañado por el batería Josh Freese (de the Vandals), el bajista Tommy Stinson (integrante de The Replacements), el guitarrista Robin Finck (integrante de Nine Inch Nails), el guitarrista Paul Huge (aka Paul Tobias), y el tecladista Dizzy Reed.

En 1999, el grupo sacó una nueva canción, Oh My God, que fue incluida en la banda sonora de El fin de los días. Esta canción era el preludio del nuevo disco, Chinese Democracy. GNR también sacó a la venta Live Era 87-93, un recopilatorio de la formación original del grupo grabada entre 1987 y 1993 en distintos conciertos. A finales de ese año, Finck volvió a Nine Inch Nails a grabar "Fragile."

En el año 2000, el excéntrico guitarrista Buckethead se unió a Guns N' Roses.

La nueva formación volvió a los escenarios en enero de 2001 con dos grandes de gran expectación, uno en Las Vegas y otro en Río de Janeiro. Formaron parte Axl Rose, los guitarristas Buckethead, Robin Finck, y Paul Huge, el bajista Tommy Stinson, los teclistas Dizzy Reed y Chris Pittman, y el batería Brain (integrante de Primus), el grupo tocó una mezcla de éxitos anteriores y nuevas canciones de su esperado disco. La formación hizo dos conciertos en Las Vegas a finales de 2001. Durante 2002, el guitarrista Paul Huge deja el grupo y es substituido por Richard Fortus, integrante de Love Spit Love. El grupo celebró varios conciertos en agosto de 2002, incluyendo conciertos en Asia y Europa, y volviendo a New York para su repentina aparición en los MTV Video Music Awards.

La primera gira del grupo desde 1993 presentó problemas. El primer concierto, en Vancouver fue cancelado porque Axl no se presentó a tiempo. Se produjo un motín. La gira siguió como estaba prevista y tuvo resultados diversos. Algunos conciertos no llenaron lugares pequeños, mientras que algunos como los de New York o Boston vendieron todas sus entradas en minutos. Debido a la no comparecencia de Axl en Philadelphia y el resultado del motín de provocado por los fans, Clear Channel, el promotor de la gira, canceló el resto de conciertos. A noviembre de 2004 el grupo no ha vuelto a tocar desde el concierto del 5 de diciembre de 2002 en el Madison Square Garden en Nueva York.

Informes del grupo de 2001 y 2002 decían que Chinese Democracy sería lanzado a finales de esos años por Interscope/Geffen Records, con quienes parecía que habían arreglado las diferencias (si es que las hubo). A pesar de las protestas de Rose, legales y de otra índole, Geffen sacó a la venta Guns n' Roses' Greatest Hits el 23 de marzo. También Cleopatra records sacó el disco "Hollywood Rose: The Roots of Guns N' Roses" a principios de verano. De nuevo, Rose no pudo parar este lanzamiento.

En 2002, Q magazine nombró a Guns N' Roses en su lista de "Los 50 Grupos que deberías ver antes de morir", también en una sub-lista de los "5 grupos que pueden evolucionar de cualquier manera".

En marzo de 2004 Buckethead deja la banda, obligando a Axl Rose a cancelar el concierto del 30 de mayo en el Rock in Rio 4 (Lisboa, Portugal), incorporándose posteriormente a la banda, sustituyéndole, Ron Thal "Bumberfoot", desde mediados de 2006.

Durante los meses de mayo y junio de 2006 los nuevos Guns N' Roses han actuado, tras un precalentamiento de 4 conciertos en Nueva York (en la prestigiosa Hammerstein Ballroom), en varios países europeos, comenzando el día 25 de mayo de 2006 en Madrid y siguiendo el día 27 de Mayo en el Rock in Rio de Lisboa (en la votación de la página web del evento Guns N' Roses fue el grupo con más votos para ser incluido en el festival), para presentar (de nuevo) el nuevo disco (que finalmente según declaraciones de Axl en la radio saldrá por fin a finales de otoño), para posteriormente actuar en Inglaterra, Hungría, Alemania, 2 veces más en España (Bilbao y El Egido), Italia, Polonia, Rep. Checa, Bélgica, Suecia, etc.

El escandalo, sin embargo, no abandona a Axl Rose, que se peleó en Mayo de 2006 un pub neoyorquino con el afamado diseñador Tommy Hilfiger (al cual posteriormente le dedicaría la canción "you're crazy" en un concierto acustico en el cumpleaños de la actriz Rosario Dawson), así como fue detenido a principios de Julio de 2006 en Suecia a altas horas de la madrugada en estado ebrio tras pelearse e incluso morder a guardias de seguridad de un establecimiento nocturno...

El nuevo disco titulado por Axl Rose como "Chinese Democracy", con nueva fecha para el otoño americano del año 2006, tendría incluidos nuevos trabajos de larga duración y complejidad, entre ellos; There Was A Time, Better, I.R.S. y Catcher In The Rye (este ultimo con la colaboración de Brian May), que ya fueron presentados durante el tour europeo y norteamericano en el transcurso del año 2006.

Basicamente, en este tour mundial revisan en casi su totalidad el repertorio de "Appetite for Destruction", más algunas canciones de "Use Your Illusion" junto la presentación de algunas de las nuevas canciones de "Chinese Democracy". Cuenta además con las intervenciones en casi todos los conciertos de los invitados Sebastian Bach y el "ex" Izzy Stradlin.

A partir del 20 de Octubre Guns N' Roses regresa para dar una gira por Norte America (cuyas fechas warm-up fueron realizadas en Las Vegas, San Francisco y Los Angeles en el aniversario de la emisora KROQ). Además, el pasado 29 de Septiembre se lanzo la nueva página oficial gunsnroses.com con junto al sistema de reservas de la MLB.com para la venta masiva de boletería para la gira norteamericana. Distinto rumores que se han publicado dicen que tal vez "Chinese Democracy" salga un martes de diciembre de este año pero no está confirmado. Además en noviembre de 2006 se sumó a la banda el baterista Frank Ferrer para reemplazar a Brian Mantia, quien había tenido un hijo hacia algunas semanas. Posteriormente, se confirmaría que Guns N' Roses actualmente cuenta con dos bateristas. Finalmente, Guns N Roses propone una última fecha de lanzamiento hasta ahora , para el 23 de Noviembre, pero como siempre nunca lo lanzaron, y esperamos ansiosos la llegada de Chinese Democracy para el 2007.

Otros proyectos

Luego de la repentina separación de la banda, los integrantes fuera de lo que era Guns N' Roses, decidieron dedicarse a trabajos personales, con el fin de sacar todo su potencial y demostrar que podían vivir sin el nombre de la vieja banda en sus espaldas.

Saul Hudson, mejor conocido como Slash, creo el conjunto Slash's Snakepit, que salió de gira durante la mitad de la década de los 90's presentando su primer disco (It's Five O Clock Somewhere). La poca movilización por una mejor publicidad y la poco importancia del mundo hacía el hard rock en ese momento, opacado por la nueva ola del Grunge y el Brit-pop, impidió que haya tenido el éxito que realmente merecía. Luego de aquel disco puramente hard-rockero, Slash retomo las actividad (5 años después). Fue lanzado Ain't Life Grand, disco que tuvo un poco más de éxito que su antecesor y brindo un buen momento de Rock n' roll al publico defensor del mismo.

Mientras tanto, Duff McKagan se unía a Neurotic Outsiders, junto a Matt Sorum y otros grandes músicos, y realizaría distintos trabajos pasajeros en Loaded y 10 Minute Warning.

Slash, Duff McKagan y Matt Sorum formaron el grupo Velvet Revolver con Scott Weiland (integrante de Stone Temple Pilots) en 2003. El grupo contribuyó a la banda sonora de The Hulk antes de sacar su primer disco, Contraband, en Junio de 2004. Contraband debutó con un número 1 en las listas de ventas. El grupo hizo una pequeña gira antes del lanzamiento del disco y durante el invierno de 2004/2005.

Izzy Stradlin continúa sacando discos en solitario y colaboró en algunas canciones de Velvet Revolver, así como ha participado en la gira europea de 2006, en las canciones más emblemáticas.

Steven Adler hizo una gira mundial con su grupo Adler's Appetite y planea sacar un disco con ellos.

Gilby Clarke formo parte, en el año 2006, del programa televisivo (Rockstar Supernova) en la búsqueda de un vocalista para una nueva banda, integrada por Clarke en guitarra, Tommy Lee (Motley Crue) en baterías y Jason Newsted (ex-Metallica) en el bajo.
