SPOILER

I hear that Shadow ends up stabbing himself after Interceptor runs off in the ending. Though they didn't show it in the American version for some anti-suicide reasons or just because, not sure... Anyone know about this? ninja

Actually, Shadow didn't survive the Floating Isle in the Japanese version according most sources. From everything I've heard, it was an American addition that he appeared at all in the World of Ruin.

I wouldn't know about that. I have the Japanese rom on emulator but I haven't played it fully because it's really time consuming trying to translate it as you go (the Japanese game is filled with Kanji) so I never quite made it past getting Edgar. >_<;;
Not a bad idea to try it again tho, eh?

I hadn't heard that, but it does make sense... I haven't played the Japanese version, but I naturally assumed that he died at the end anyways, because, well, you know, the tower was sort of collapsing. That sort of thing is usually fatal. Besides, he commented that he wasn't running anymore, remember? He said he was going to start over?

Well, in the english version, if you save Shadow instead of leaving him, in the World of Ruin it refers to him as a "She"
The reason for this is, if you don't save him, you find Relm where you would have found Shadow. And she, of course, is referred to as "She".
So it's a glitch or whatever with the gender.

I dunno if that's what you're thinking of.

Yeah, I remember him saying that he was going to start over, but... I didn't assume he died, as he was going to start over. Unless I suppose he believes in being reborn. Maybe he'd fake his death, and start over. Not like anyone in the party saw his face to begin with.

I'd imagine that maybe someone would get the idea that Shadow never survived the floating island, because they forgot to change the text for when you find him in the caves. Relm is there normally. Therefor "she". Who knows.

He sends Interceptor away, though. I don't know about Shadow's beliefs as far as reincarnations, but again, the tower was collapsing. The rest of the party used the Falcon and they barely got out alive. I seriously doubt he could live through a whole tower falling on him, even if he is an awesome ninja. No one saw his face, but I got the distinct feeling that Relm (who I think has Interceptor now) would know somehow. And even if she didn't, the dog would.

Also, now that I think about it... changing the programming to make him available in the endgame would be awkward. I mean yes, adding another character is no big deal, but the bit on the Floating Continent would have been troublesome. Add a trigger tile, add a command box, set it to reset every howevermany seconds, make sure that you can't wait past the five second mark, add the graphics for him showing up, set the jump graphics for everyone else when he does... add his ending... that's a lot of changing for just keeping a character around. Plus he's actually got a plotline in the WoR. All those dream sequences? I'm going to try a Japanese playthrough once I'm done with XII, and I'll let you know what I get, but I really think that he's not meant to die at the Floating Continent.

He isn't meant to die at the Floating Continent. You can get/keep him in the WOR in the Japanese version. Someone I know has the Japanese Super Famicon cart ( heart ), and when he loaded the file at the end of the game, Shadow was playable.

As far as the whole "she" thing goes, with the Cave in the Veldt... there are two theories:
- mistranslation: the word for "she" and "he" in Japanese is similar or the same, and it was translated incorrectly.
- the programmers assumed that you'd be saving Relm in the cave, not Shadow.
