[Post Razuten's disappearance.]

Rin-ji was finding less and less to occupy himself with the longer Razuten was missing. He had taken up a regular vigil around the marketplace at least once a day, and added to it recently was bringing along scrolls he was borrowing from Razuten. (What use would the firebending master have for them right now anyway?)

A stone memorial of their glorious firelord provided some shade for the young man who was pouring over the paper with a vengeance. He looked deep in thought, eyebrows creased in determination. He murmured only brief hellos to the regular shopkeepers who were growing accustomed to his face. The solemn expressions on his face were seemingly those of great concentration, and reflections of a great student. He was so focused, he looked almost angry.

But that was no coincidence. Rin-ji stopped to let go of the scroll quickly and rub his hands together or set them on the cool stone when they became dangerously hot with his temper. This was accompanied by a quick string of explicatives that made a young lady passing by blush and glower at him. He reddened in response and bowed his head embarrassedly.

The pictures on the scrolls were very nice, but Rin-ji was facing a small problem in making sense of the techniques shown, as it hadn't been seen as worthwhile to teach a servant how to read.

A short distance away, Li Ren was doing what she did best. Or at least, what she did best when she didn't have a weapon in her hand. Standing behind a shorter girl, she seemed to be caught up in deep conversation debating the various qualities of the jewelry pieces laid out before them.

The booth owner looked on with a very pleased expression, occasionally popping into the conversation to steer them towards or away from one piece of jewelry or another. At last they seemed to settle on a small, delicate pearl-adorned hair comb. The shopkeeper looked immensely satisfied with the selection as he named the price and Li Ren tossed the copper pieces at him. Sure, he might be giving her a discount, but his wares were hardly flying off the shelves.

Transaction completed, Li Ren took the comb, whispering into the girl's ear intimately as she slid the beautifully ornamented piece of jewelry into her hair. The girl flushed deeply, giggling nervously as she preened in a small mirror the shopkeeper held for her. As Li Ren paid her empty compliments about her beauty, it was then that her gaze broke for a second and caught sight of the gangly firebending student seated over some papers.

A few minutes more and the other girl had run off. Li Ren didn't know what these girls told their parents about the mysterious gifts, but she didn't particularly care. She enjoyed the thrill of a brief flirtation and starry-eyed adoration, but truly these girls were little more than objects to her and she felt contempt for them that they would allow themselves to be treated in such a way.

She strode towards the firelord's statue and with the boy so caught up in his studying, it was easy to creep up behind him. Bending down to his level, she chided softly, "If you keep looking like that, your face will freeze that way."

Rin-ji jumped despite the soft tone. The anger seemed to be spooked out of him as he scrambled to compose himself. When he realized it was Li Ren, he managed to puff himself up a bit. The fact that it was her wounded his pride even further, largely because of things that were entirely not her fault. He rolled up the scrolls hurriedly as if they might give away his shortcomings to Li Ren just by allowing her a glance at them.

"Never thought you were all that worried about my face," he sighed, not sounding nearly as aggressive as he wanted to. He had seen Li Ren once or twice in the marketplace and had always given her plenty of space. Now that he was confronted by her, he hoped his face wasn't as red as it felt.

"I can't ignore a pretty girl in distress," she murmured into his ear. Amusement passed over Li Ren's features as she straightened back up and though she didn't see the contents of the scrolls, she more than noticed how anxious he was to prevent her from seeing them. "What's that you have there? I hope it's not love poetry; if you have to resort to love poetry, she isn't worth wooing," she advised casually, though her disdain for her own gender was easily discernible in her voice.

Without waiting for a response or an invitation, she settled down next to Rin-ji, leaning back on her hands and looking up at him expectantly, "Well? It's not really love poetry, is it?"

"No, no," he denied quickly, looking even redder, "it's definitely not love poetry."

"They're bending scrolls. I was just studying them in my spare time..." He looked over at Li Ren, and a thoughtful look passed over his face momentarily. Rin-ji would bet anything that she knew very well how to read. But then that familiar defensiveness washed over him and he looked away, closing up all the scrolls with a determined sigh. She was the last person he was going to solicit for that sort of aid. "But I'm finished for now."

He set them aside, folded his hands in his lap, and even smiled. It was a thin smile that made it clear he was wary of Li Ren, but the gesture was still there.

Li Ren didn't spend much time people reading, or at least she seemed oblivious to the fact that Rin-ji might not be enjoying her presence. She leaned back further, staring up at the sky, and at length seemed to actually hear what Rin-ji had said. "Bending scrolls? Why would need those," she wondered aloud, turning her gaze on him and squinting slightly in the sun.

Rin-ji hesitated. But he couldn't risk not telling Li Ren when she might know something, if she hadn't already heard the rumors. Sobering up, he leaned back dejectedly on the stone.

"...Razuten disappeared a while ago. He left these behind." He gestured to the scrolls unhappily.

Li Ren frowned deeply. This was the first she had heard about Razuten's disappearance. Her first reaction was to accuse him of lying, but she caught her tongue before the words crossed her lips. After all, the last time she had accused him of such things had turned out remarkably poorly for her.

Instead she arched an eyebrow at him, "He disappeared? When? Why?"

"Not long after, uh, after we first saw eachother. A woman came and said his master was very sick, so he left to see him." He explained, sitting up again, beoming more animated. "The next day I ran into this crazy girl who claimed to be his girlfriend or something, but I had never heard of her. Her name was, uh, Tu Jin, and she claimed Razuten's master's been dead for ages. But I know Razuten's said he had been training with him for the whole time I was with him."

"Then," he continued, obviously feeling this was a very important part, "the Avatar herself showed up. Razuten knew her somehow, and she got all serious and left in a real hurry when I told her what happened. She seemed so worried..." There were still a few butterflies left in his stomach from the meeting with Kahamo.

"And... I just don't know. I've been looking for him. And that's it." Now that it was all out of his system, Rin-ji realized how much he had been holding in and it felt good to tell someone. Even Li Ren. It had all just tumbled out, and now he felt drained.
PostPosted: Mon Dec 25, 2006 5:24 pm

Li Ren's eyebrows furrowed as Rin-ji spoke. His tale was difficult to believe, especially when the Avatar was thrown into the mix; on the other hand, he seemed genuinely distressed and she didn't think even he would go to such extravagant lengths to keep her away from his master. The events that Rin-ji described were like nothing Li Ren had ever experienced before -- her world was so self-contained, all she troubled herself with were her own problems: an unwanted fiance and a father holding her back from her dreams.

She rubbed her chin against her shoulder thoughtfully as she tried to fully digest everything the taller boy had said. Honestly? She was kind of at a lack for words and felt somewhat helpless. Unsurprisingly, Li Ren didn't have any close friends and she certainly had never had someone confess all their troubles to her in such a fashion. Idle conversation over tea generally involved discussing who was engaged to whom and whose family was sinking into ruin. (Her own family, no doubt, was a hot topic of conversation among her so-called friends when she wasn't around.)

She shifted uncomfortably, crossing one leg over the other. Rin-ji was quite the damsel in distress after all, but Li Ren was hardly prepared to be his knight. Several moments had passed since Rin-ji had finished speaking before Li Ren finally responded, "It sounds like everyone knows something you don't."

Rin-ji pulled his knees up against his chest and folded his arms over them to make a place for his chin to rest. Though he wouldn't describe his situation as similar to that of a damsel in distress, he felt quite helpless as well. Whether it was real or just due to false restrictions he put on himself, he couldn't say. There was nothing stopping him from acting, but he justified that there wasn't anything left to do.

"Probably," he agreed, "I'm no big piece of anyone's puzzle. They're all working to find him, I'm sure, but guess it's just not important for the likes of me to know. I just want... Why am I telling you this?" He suddenly asked, as if realizing he was telling everything to one of the people that moments before he would have sworn up and down never to speak about his troubles with. Still, he couldn't find it in him at the moment to be aggressive.

Rin-ji's words forced Li Ren to face a reality check as well. Here she was, a woman of high birth, socializing in public with the lowest of low. Well, maybe not the lowest, after all he was no longer a servant as he liked to remind her. He was, however, on the run from a very displeased former employer, so was that really much better? He looked the part too -- couldn't Razuten at least have dressed him in some more acceptable clothing?

Li Ren sighed inwardly. Up until that moment they had almost been acting like friends, both of them forgetting the enormous social gap between them. Talking to Rin-ji was strangely nice when neither one of them was puffing up their chest at the other. It was a rarity for Li Ren to interact with someone without hiding behind one of her masks - either that of the well brought up nobleman's daughter or the fierce warrior in training. Rin-ji wasn't a part of either of Li Ren's worlds, though Li Ren herself was hardly self-aware enough to realize that this was why she felt momentarily free to just be herself.

She pursed her lips as she had a decision to make: leave and preserve her dignity, or stay and face unknown consequences later. Running would be easy. She could say something snide and leave him in the dust and never have to worry about him again. Society allowed Li Ren many eccentricities, but it would be far less forgiving of this particular one.

But when Li Ren claimed to fight so hard against the role society had trust her into simply for being a woman, could she really be proud of herself for yielding to it in this situation?

She leaned forward, stretching her arms out before her, giving all the appearance of having little care in the world despite the question Rin-ji had just posed of her. "I don't know what makes you so certain he's missing at all. My father leaves all the time and no one sends out a search party," her tone was faintly haughty when she finally spoke, but she preferred deflecting him back to Razuten's disappearance than try to actually answer his question.

"But he didn't tell me or anything." Rinji protested, seemingly in denial that the other teen could have up and left without telling him. The idea had crossed his mind, but it was not very comfortable to think that Razuten just decided to go on vacation and forget all about him. Maybe he ran off with that girl. Rin-ji sighed, thoughts untouched by the concerns that plagued Li Ren. He seemed content just to have an ear.

"I'm sure your father lets you know when he's going to be away. Lord Yuan always took so long preparing that we knew when he'd be home a week before he even decided to leave." As his voice grew dull and distant, it was unclear whether or not Rin-ji spoke of his home nostalgically. Lord Yuan was often unusually kind to him, and although he missed some faces, he hated the idea of ever going back.

"Maybe. I don't concern myself with my father's comings and goings. That's something for the servants to worry about," she replied thoughtlessly. Li Ren had never had a warm relationship with her father, but it had soured significantly since she had become old enough for him to start using her as a bargaining chip for political advancement. It wasn't that he was a especially cold hearted man, but that was simply the way things were -- particularly for a family like Li Ren's who had spent generations scrambling to raise themselves in society's eyes.

As Rin-ji mentioned Lord Yuan it only served as a reminder that befriending a boy like him was not only hurting herself, but her family as well. Not that.. she was befriending him. She hardly even liked him! She was just.. talking to him. There wasn't anything better to be doing at the moment anyway, right?

"You shouldn't worry yourself," she said decisively, flicking a piece of hair our of her face with annoyance. "He's bound to turn up eventually."

"Easy for you to say," he said with an impatient sigh. He wasn't surprised that Li Ren didn't understand the gravity of Razuten's disappearance from his life. She had everything laid out for her. There would never be a moment where Li Ren would need to worry about what was to become of her life, or so Rin-ji thought. For a moment he, too, felt the distance between them, and it left him feeling uncomfortable.

"Who else is going to teach me? If this doesn't work out for me, I may as well resign myself to a life cleaning up after others," he explained, struggling to close the social gap between them though trying to make her understand. "I can't do anything else. But," he rubbed the back of his neck, searching for the words, "if I master firebending, I can be my own lord."
