I want to catch some flies and ants, I set them down in my house, should I leave them outside?

Yup. That will work. Just leave them outside and they'll attract flies. Also, if you don't want to waste them, if you pull up junk from fishing it and leave it on the ground, it will attract flies...not sure about ants though.

Yup. That will work. Just leave them outside and they'll attract flies. Also, if you don't want to waste them, if you pull up junk from fishing it and leave it on the ground, it will attract flies...not sure about ants though.
The only thing that attracts ants are turnips. I've tried all the trash items, they only collect flies. And don't leave your turnip outside until it's rotten already. I left a good turnip outside, waiting for it to rot, and it disappeared before it went bad. Never found it. Leave it in your house, and when it rots, put it outside. 3nodding

How long do I have to wait around for it?
I put one outside and it disappeared. Do I just stand next to it?

I put one outside and it disappeared. Do I just stand next to it? If it's already rotten, then just put it on the ground outside and walk around for a bit. 5 minutes, maybe. Then come back and there should be ants and flies. If not, walk around some more.
If it's not rotten yet, then don't leave it outside. It might disappear. Leave it in your house, or inventory, for a whole week. It'll rot after a week, when Joan shows up again.

you buy them and then drop them anywear and leave them for 1 week and then they will go rotten and then ants come and you can get your net out and catch one talk2hand
