Today was another beautiful days in the Pridelands, the lands that he called home with his lovely mate Kitengele. Oh, how he loved her so much! She was simply amazing and he couldn't have asked for a better partner in life. What was even better was that they lived in such a wonderful place surrounded by kind and caring lions. Even better than that was the fact that they were going to start a family soon! The thought made him tingle with delight. A multitude of questions ran through his head.

What would the cubs look like? How many were there going to be? Would there be more girls than boys, more boys than girls, or an equal amount of the two? He bet they'd be beautiful like their mother. Hopefully not too many, they were going to be first-time parents after all. He hoped that there was at least one boy and one girl.

There were many more questions running through his head, but they were all too jumbled for him to really decipher and think about.

Sighing happily, the fluffy soon to-be father walked steadily along through the Pridelands. His mate had been sleeping when he had first set out, and he didn't want to disturb her so he had set out quietly on his own. The morning air was crisp and refreshing on his face as the breeze gently blew by.

Nothing could have been any better in his life.

As if on cue, another creature had begun her morning walk around the same time that the purple lion had. Although, her life wasn't as wonderful as his was. Of course, it wasn't horrible either, and so she didn't have much to complain about.

"Food, I need to find food," she spoke to herself. Yes, food. She didn't get a chance to eat yesterday, and so she had to make up for that today. Her stomach growled in agreement. Groaning slightly, she set out at a brisk trot. She had heard that the lands nearby held a bountiful amount of delicious prey, and she didn't want to miss out on anything. The lands, however, belonged to a huge pride of lions. She'd have to be cautious.

Passing over the border, although unknowingly, her nose began to twitch. She didn't scent anything on the wind, but she didn't give up. Some of the qualities that came with being a hunter were patience and persistance.

Continuing along, the female maned wolf's ears flicked this way and that, acting on high alert. There was no way she could defend herself against any sort of lion (unless it was a cub of course) and so she couldn't let her guard down.

Ashki continued along, his tail swaying easily behind him as he sauntered through the lands. It seemed like nothing in the world could get him down. His life just seemed so perfect! And it had only seemed like just yesterday that he had been a slave, escaping from his tormenters of his old pride as a cub. But that was really so long ago, wasn't it?

He sighed, though this time it wasn't such a happy sigh. He really did wonder whether his mother had gotten punished for his actions. Yet he would never know. And even if he went back to find out--which he probably couldn't do, they'd kill him on sight--she would probably be dead anyways. She had been old to begin with when she had had him.

"Mother.." he whispered, stopping for a moment and glancing up at the sky. He wondered if she had gone to a lion heaven of sorts, if there was such a thing.

Shaking his head, he forced himself to forget about such things. It was all in the past, and he needn't think about that. Moving along once more, he spotted something coming towards him in the distance. It looked rather lanky, and it didn't appear to have the body frame of any sort of lion he had seen. Tilting his head in a rather curious manner, he moved forward to check it out.

As he approached the other, he noticed that it was actually a maned wolf (although he didn't know that). He had never seen one before! Such an odd creature. But, what was it doing here? Was it all alone?

"Uhm.. excuse me," he stammered, hoping not to frighten it. "Are you alone?"

Resee continued along, her nose twitching all the while. There had to be prey around here somewhere! Unless she had been lied to. That would have been horrible, being lied to about such a thing. And who would lie about such a thing? Shaking her head, she sighed and continued on her quest for food.

Moving through the tall grasses, something sounded from ahead of her. It sounded like a voice, a deep voice, probably belonging to an adult male. But an adult male of what?

Lifting her head, she blinked. It was a lion, and a rather oddly colored one at that. Her ears folded back defensively as she heard him ask if she was all alone. She glanced around her, finding that a rather dumb question.

"Yes..." she answered carefully, making sure that he was always a reasonable distance from her. If he decided to attack, she would at least have some sort of a head start.

"Am I trespassing?"

Ashki's round ears folded back as the maned wolf's own ears went back against her skull. Even though he hadn't really seen a wolf before, he had a clue as to what that meant. She was either scared, tentative, or wary of him. Judging by the look on her face, he supposed it was the last of those.

"Oh, I'm sorry," he fumbled, chuckling nervously. Sheesh, even around those skinnier and scrawnier than him he couldn't hold up his confidence. "I didn't mean to intrude on anything. Uhm--" He cut himself off as he noticed that the female was speaking.

Trespassing?

"Oh no. Or, well, not really. These lands belong to a pride, but I don't think you will be troubled much by anyone. The lions here really are quite nice," he added, nodding his head. He seemed rather childish, almost, as he spoke. And speaking of lions...

"Hey, what are you anyways?" he asked. But then he realized that that might have seemed a bit rude, and so he rephrased it. "Oh, I'm sorry. I mean.. uhm.. what species are you? I'm sure I've never seen anything like you before."

Res tilted her head at the newcomer, the large lion. She really did see his colors as strange. Purple.. such an odd shade that she had never before witnessed! Yet her awe was cut short as he spoke to her again. Shaking her head, she cleared her mind and forced herself to focus. How was she to keep herself alive if she drifted off at the slightest distraction?

"Oh no," she said softly. "It's alright. I was just.. taking a walk." And hunting. But if these lands really did belong to a pride of lions, then she didn't need to go telling him that. Territorial predators usually didn't like other predators on their lands hunting their food. Even as Ash mentioned that the lions here were nice and that she wouldn't have to worry about them, she still kept herself alert. Cats were deceiving creatures.

When he asked her what she was, she bared her teeth slightly at him. The first time he asked, it had come out rather wrong and she hadn't liked it. Not one bit. Yet then he corrected himself and she calmed herself down.

"Oh, I'm a maned wolf. You've never seen someone like me before?" she asked. Well, that either meant that maned wolves weren't allowed here or he was just sheltered. She believed there were plenty of her kind out in the world. Plenty enough, anyways.

"And you.. your color," she murmured, looking at his shoulder. "I've never seen anything like it."

"Oh," Ash mumbled, not really knowing what to say to this creature. He didn't know how they act or what they liked or what they didn't like, and so he felt like he was at a slight disadvantage. Nevertheless, he didn't give up. He wanted to make a good impression and make this female feel welcome.

"A maned wolf?" he echoed, sure that he had never heard of such a thing. But, if she was standing straight in front of him and was saying that that was indeed what she was, then he would believe it. What else could he do, call her a liar?

When she seemed intrigued by his colors, he glanced down, managing only to see part of his forelegs through that thick mane of his.

"My color? I think my father had it, since my mother was mostly black," he replied, surprised at his own knowledge of his father. Where had that come from? His father had never stuck around to see him grow up, and he had definitely never seen his own father before. So where did that come from?

Shaking his great head, he blinked at the maned wolf. "Oh, I don't think I've gotten your name yet. Mine is Ashki, if it means anything," he said, smiling.

Resee blinked at the lion standing in front of her. He was so big and fluffy, and yet he seemed as harmless as a little bug. He was kind, too. Were all lions like this? She hadn't exactly met one before, but she had been warned to stay away from them since some had quite the tempers. Hopefully this one didn't have a temper that he was hiding.

"Yeah, a maned wolf. I'm surprised you've never seen one before," she said truthfully. "There's a whole lot of us, though maybe not around this pride.." She thought, wondering. She didn't really know many maned wolves outside of her family, and so she couldn't say for certain that she knew there were a lot. But she figured there were enough, what with how big the families of them could be.

"Oh, that's interesting," she said in response to him talking about his color. She wondered if there were any maned wolves out there with the color purple, or if it was just confined to lions. Surely it couldn't be? That would be sad. She rather liked the color and would love to see some of her own kind wearing it.

"My name? It's Resee, or just Res. I don't really mind either way. It's nice to meet you, Ashki."

"Yeah, I really haven't seen one of your kind. It's rather strange. Maybe it's because I'm so shy, though. I don't usually go out on adventures and everything.." he explained, shuffling his paws slightly. But that was enough about him. He didn't really feel comfortable doing that. Besides, she probably didn't want to hear about some incompetent purple thing.

"But yeah.." he said uneasily. Now what?

"Oh, it's nice to meet you too," he said happily, glad to get away from the subject of him that he had so clumsily brought up. "What were you doing out here anyways, Resee?" he asked curiously, unable to really help himself. It was in his cat-ly nature to be curious about these sorts of things.

"Well, maybe you will meet others like me after this!" she said, sounding rather optimistic. She stopped, having surprised herself there. She was bitter, unhappy sometimes. What was this that had just come out? She shook her head, feeling rather strange. Was she acting happy for once? But what for? Just because someone had shown her a bit of kindness...

"Oh, I was just taking a walk, and looking for some food," she admitted, feeling that he had some right to know. It didn't seem like he'd go babbling to anyone that a maned wolf was on their lands stealing food. She wasn't even that good of a hunter.

Her stomach grumbled loudly, loud enough for the male to hear it. Embarassed slightly, she attempted to cover it up.

"And I think I should be going. I have lots of things to do today," she lied. Gosh, she was so uneasy and jumpy now. Maybe it was the fact that she was so confused about her recent feelings, very recent. She didn't like them, and so wanted to get away from them as soon as possible.

"It was nice to meet you, Ashki the purple lion," she called to him, moving away quickly. Within moments, she was gone.

Ashki blinked after her, confused. But he simply shook his head then continued on his walk.
