It was not hard to find him. Calamity knew Faust's scent as well as any blood parent would. And the mingled notes of panic, wild desperation, and fear only enhanced the smell...when he reached Faust's clearing, there was no doubt whatsoever that the stallion was there.
He landed with a soft, earthy thud. The trees provided enough cover to keep the snow off the ground, and the frozen mud dampened the noise of his landing. Calamity lifted his chin and turned on the spot; behind him, crouching awkwardly in the shadows, was the closest thing he had to a son.
Calamity's dark green eyes pierced the growning darkness, narrowed to emerald slits. He contemplated the boy, for he was more a child than ever despite his full grown physique, and swished his tail finally before speaking.
"You're pathetic."

Wispy puffs of breath curled up from Faust's clenched teeth, fading into the atmosphere at just about eye-level. And what eyes they were. Terrified, furious, pleading, gazing upon the one creature on this earth that could make or break his very soul. And the first words he had spoken to him in the weeks since he broke ties with his mother...calling him pathetic? He was still too stunned to react.
He blinked, the cold burning his eyelids as he hyperventilated and watched Calamity stare him down, every muscle under his dark coat tensed despite fatigue.
