Fruit doesn't grow 100% every time you plant one, but season doesn't matter. Location, on the other hand, does. If you grow them too close to the beach, rocks, or the edges, they won't grow. If you place them too close to each other, they might not grow, and if they do, your town rating will go down.
Also, if you ever get coconuts, you have to plant them near the beach.

They will grow anytime of the year and any season. The only thing that would prevent them the fruit from growing is by planting them to close to the border (aka the walls of your small town), near rocks or by other trees. To include there are certian areas in your town that will not grow a single tree, EVER! A tree, no matter how muchg you try, it won't grow there.

Those places are usually the ones out by the ocean that stick out a bit. Or too close to rivers.
