[You'll never know]August 2004: First Sunday Practice of the Year Why is life so confusing? Why does life have to be so hard? If only it was easier. Then maybe it would be easier to keep a promise. Maybe it would be easier...
A little teenage girl looked outside the car window, sighing as her mind slowly went blank and the view appeared before her eyes. It was a Sunday afternoon, with the summer sun blazing hot outside--bound to burn someone to a crisp. The car she was in drove into the parking lot; right in front of a school building. "Do you have everything?" a low and slightly hostile voice asked. The person who answered back groaned and spoke in a childish and whiny way. "Yes, dad," she emphasized the last word. "I have everything. Can I go now?"
It did seem like she did have everything--more than she needed in fact. A bulging, little red backpack casually hanged by one of her shoulders; with a water bottle clinging on the outside--and had two items with her: a slim flute case in one hand, and a cell phone in the other. The look on her face made it seem like she was so anxious to get outside... like a dog wanting to get out of the house to roam around a bit.
But her father was quite doubtful if this simply was just practice. "Do you want me to walk with you to the door?"
"No!" she shrieked with disapproval, as she opened the car door and ran toward the building. Her deep red eyes were still wide with shock while she scurried as fast as she could.
Her mother popped out her head from the open car window, chuckling. "Your dad said to call us once you get in the room!" Another groan. "Ok!"
Once she reached the heavy door, she slipped off her shoes and shuffled in through the passageway. Before she could glance out the room, she took a sharp turn to face the lockers. As she was told to, she called, making sure they left. Once she hanged up, she looked what was before her--in the other direction from where she was--to see the risers, chairs, and a few other people in the band. A sigh of relief escaped her lips as she waved and sat down. Thoughts quickly went through her mind, as a couple of people practiced music. The room became a blur... and shadows masked her eyes. The look on her face was neutral. No sign of happiness. No sign of sorrow. Just a mask hiding her fears, her pain, her confusion... silent. She stayed silent like nothing had happened--as if time stopped. And then... and then--
"YUU!" someone yelled as the girl, who was quiet as a mouse started to squeak like one. She was picked up by a monster; a guy named Roy, and was now about two to three feet in the air.
"Put me down! Put me down!" she squeaked, trying to escape his grasp. She was now in the palm of the cat's paw. With a smirk though, her feet touched the ground and she was free. "I-... I like the ground..."
Yuumei is a complex person--not an average girl at all. With a young face, four foot ten in height, and the weight of seventy-five pounds (give or take), you would think she was in elementary school! But no, she was actually fourteen-years-old. A moody, crazy, smart-to-the-verge-of-insanity teenager... that's what she was.
Nevertheless, that fact would be doubted when she acted so childish. In fact, it was being doubted right now.
After the trembling sensation passed, and her feet could stay flat upon the carpet floor, Yuu fumed as she stormed her way towards the intimidating big man. But before she could...
"Hold on your nosey little person!" Nohiro bellowed as he held her back by the collar of her black t-shirt. Yuumei tried to escape but with no avail. "What is it, Nohiro?!" she sneered as she turned to look at him, glaring. She knew what this was about. That terrible, sly grin had appeared on his face already.
"Oh nothing sis, I just wanted to make sure you DIDN'T open your mouth yet," he began. "Because you know what would happen if you did." He smirked a bit, as she looked at him weirdly.
She put her hands on her hips. "What the hell are you talking about? And why would I tell--..." she stopped there. "Oops."
His eyes suddenly had fling open wide, suddenly frightened. "WHAT DID YOU DO?!" "Er... I might have said something." "WHAT?!" Suddenly, Yuumei burst into laughter. She was never good at pretending. "I'm joking! I promise I didn't." "You sure?!" "I didn't!"
"... Well, I guess I'll just go and try to find you-know-who. His name's.... Rune, right?" An evil laugh echoed for just a moment--just for one second--until the laugh turned into a scream of pain and help. He looked at where the pain was coming from; his arm. And there was Yuu's hand, her long nails piercing his skin. The cold star that drilled into his eyes so close to giving him chills. "Or not!"
The girl just spoke in a threatening, shrieking voice to him. "Oh hell no!!! OH HELL NO. YOU BETTER NOT DO THAT, you got it?!"
"Yes!" he half-whimpered. With that, she let go, and frightening enough, returned to her quiet self... as if nothing had happened.
Despite the fact that the two called each other siblings, they were no where near related. "Say, Yuumei, is that your brother?" "... Close enough," she said, still giving Nohiro a mean look.
They met back when she was in eighth grade, seeing how "he had no life". He had come with other upperclassmen to her band class often, and when her friend, Yoko, had started to like him, she couldn't help but poke fun at the two.
After school was finally over and summer (as well as Band Camp) approached, the six-foot-one giant had gone back to liking someone that the little girl seemed to know. As time passed, he found out that Yuu knew more about his feelings for the girl who just so happens to be her neighbor. Thankfully for him, Yuu was a softie for romance, so now, she knows things people have never thought of, and he knew something Yuu never told anyone else. Things like this could cause a sibling bond to appear out of no where.
Yuumei folded her arms, still glaring at her "big brother". He was too busy inspecting the cuts and scratches on his arm. Another item to his collection of scars. "Well, Mr. Callejo--"
That certainly got his attention. The usual eye-widening and glaring reaction made her giggle. "Oh Yuu, could I see you by my locker now?" he faked the kindness in his voice as he advanced towards his "sister"--ready to strangle her.
However, she was always one step away as she back-stepped. She looked behind her as she walked backwards, and looked at him grinning. The door opening to the hallway was open. "Well, Mr.... You-know-who, look who's outside?" she ducked as he was about to grab her, with perfect timing. His eyes were practically popping out of their sockets as his hand stopped right then and there. He was surely going to kill Yuumei now...
Because Rena was now staring at him, clueless.
The sophomore raised an eyebrow at the junior. "Hi, Nohiro..." she could see the words "Your neighbor is DEAD!" sprawled all over his face. Nohiro just tried to hide it as Yuu attempted to crawl away quietly. "So how have you been?" he asked. She only shrugged and said, "Um... ok, I guess. How about you?"
He smiled and replied to Rena, trying to avoid the soft snickering as Yuumei crawled away for the two to talk. Nohiro started to forget what happened within moments, because of the comfort he felt when he was with his crush.
His "little sister" sat on the risers, gazing at them. She was satisfied with what happened this time. Great, this plan worked pretty well,' she thought to herself. I just hope I don't screw it up like last time... Man that was so horrible. I feel guilty for that still!'
Her thoughts were shattered once more however, when she found some of her freshman friends had suddenly popped out of no where. "Hi!" they all chimed. "Ahh! Hey, when did you guys get here?" "What, no hello?" replied one of them. "Yesh, no hello to you, YOKO," Yuumei smirked to her fellow Asian. Yoko just pretended to be offended as she sniffed and rolled into a ball. "Aww..." "Oh, come on! I'm just joking!" "I know you are." "That's good. ...
It was quiet among the quartet. Yoko was the one who acknowledged it. "Awkward silence..." Lizzie added on a minute later. "Cricket, cricket..." "... Tumbleweed!" Sammy motioned an invisible one rolling on by. The three then looked at Yuu, who was completely weird out. "Ok... WHO ARE YOU?!"
They all suddenly burst into laughter. Good time to escape. Yuumei slipped away once more and went over to Ariel and Alan--two other freshman she knew better. And weren't as strange. "Hi you two," she waved from the railing on the risers. The other two were on the floor, getting ready. "Hello Yuu." "What are you two up to?" Alan blinked. "Oh, nothing really." Ariel climbed up with her cell phone in hand. "Hey, I still have the pictures from Wednesday," a sly grin appeared on her face. "Oh you mean--?" "Yes!"
"Lemme see!" Yuumei took the cell phone in hand and looked through the files of snapshots--all of Nohiro getting his fairly long black hair "styled". Ariel and she began to laugh almost uncontrollably. "Oh, that's so rich!" Ariel could only nod as she took back the cell phone and ran off. Where did she run off to? "Oh no," Yuumei said, face palmed. Her friend was by Nohiro and Rena now. "Oh Nohiro!" Ariel sang, "Look what I got!" She practically shoved the small device into his face when he turned to look. "What the bloody hell? I can't see it!" He said as he moved Ariel's arm slightly away so her could see it better.
He was furious. He stood there with his hand on his hips, and tapping his foot. It looked as if he was a father or a teacher getting ready to scold a child. "ARIEL!" Nohiro roared as he bolted after the chuckling freshman. Yuu just watched, laughing as well.
I still remember the day I felt like I belonged for the first time in years... I wish I could feel like that again...

[how much you mean to me] Name: Yuumei Tenshi (First name meaning "Light and Dark"; last name meaning "Angel" in japanese) Nicknames: Yuu, Reki, Minami, Mousie, Duckie, Shorty... *insert all short nicknames here* Occupation: High School Student
Gender: Female Race: Human (angel... tainted?) Sign: Aries Age: fifteen (gave birth to Hinote at the age of fourteen) Height: ... 4'10". Weight: 75 lbs., give or take a few. Blood Type: O
Hair Color: Raven Black Eye Color: Crimson Red Distinguishing Marks: Gray angel wings on the back (disappear into a tattoo-like marking on her back when not wanted to be seen), small black bat-like wings on her head (usually covered by a hat). Baby face (looks younger than she really is)
Personality: At times she can be very hyper and bubbly, but has a short temper and can be very violent some times. However, she cares deeply about friends and dearly beloved ones, and will do anything to comfort them. She has great empathy, but when it comes to certain people, she struggles to understand them. Because of her youthful appearance, she tends to act very childish. Finds comfort in music.
Special Qualities: Poetic, empathetic. Fairly good gun shooting; plays music well. Will be there for someone who needs help.
Currently: WHERE THE HELL IS MAI BABEH!?!?!? gonk
Yuumei came to Gaia upon trying to realize a dream she had. It was of a young child with wings of ash, and eyes of blood. When she stumbled upon the Fa'e HQ, she realized that destiny must have brought her here to meet Rei, her fa'e child. In time, she became one of the fa'e sheriffs, and for kicks, she carries a gun in a holster strapped to her right thigh. She doesn't use it though, and doesn't carry around bullets. Because she is the Guardian of the once Angel of Death, she recieved gray angel wings, that hide on her back as a tattoo, of some sort. It was a sign she was given one day. She also gained black bat-like wings when she entered Gaia, as if it was like a distinction of who she was or something. She's a very kind girl, who is intelligent but lacks wisdom that she wants to gain so badly. One flaw of hers is that she tends to push away people she loves in time.
Despite her tender age of fifteen, Yuu's small and fragile. She weighs only 75 pounds, and a slender figure. She's only 4'10". Her eyes aren't that well, being near-sided, so she is usually seen wearing glasses. Her hair is layered, and is currently brushes her shoulders. Her voice is fairly high, especially when she squeaks or screams. Some people wonder why this is, but it might have to do with a wish Yuu made when she was 10-years-old. She wished to stay a kid forever. Although her body still goes through puberty slightly, she can be easily mistaken for an elementary school or middle school student.
At the moment, Yuu has been fairly distant to her friends and family in Gaia, because of her education at Kapolei High. Because of her love of music, she spends most of her time there with the Marching Band, and plays flute. The Band is so dedicated and love to have together, that they tend to make up these groups of friends called "band families". Usually, Yuu can be seen in her black and red attire, but whenever she has the chance, she wears her shirt that just screams out "I'M WITH THE BAND".
But not only is she into Band at school now, but the Mock Trial team. And with a perfect report card, what could her future hold if she keeps this up?(Screw Nohiro. Something happened on Earth, and Hinote has yet to know.)

[how much your broken heart]October 8, 2004: I'm Pregnant!"I've promised myself so many things... that I would never fall in love... that I would never have a child of my own... thinking that it would save me pain. Well, here I am--and there's no turning back. I've broken too many promises. This time, I'm going to keep the promise I make to myself... I'm not going to let a life go to waste. Another soul is within me--my child. I'm not going to let him or her down. I'm going to love and take care of my baby, to be the best they can be. Nothing can make me break that promise. Nothing."
I don't usually like taking pictures, but this turned out great! Rena took a picture of me jumping on the rail (in which I almost lost my balance >>). This was taken the evening when my family took me out to dinner to cheer me up.

[For you to find destiny]Thursday, September 16, 2004 (8:36 PM) Dear Diary,
Man, this thing is collecting dust. But I swear, I really have been busy! School has been a living nightmare. I'm so glad that the quarter is ending next week friday, but it really, really SUCKS that I haven't finished all my projects. I'm soooo dead. At least the BG's (band geeks, hehe!) are cool. I have a "band family" now, which is really fun. It's something the drum major, Janice, had started. I just have to get this down in writing, so that when I look back at this thing, I can see how crazy I was back then. X3
You see, usually when two people in the band are dating, they are the "mommy and daddy" of a family. Their friends become their "children". Some of them actually do play the role very well. It's pretty funny.
My "dad"'s this Junior named Nohiro. He's supposed to be a Senior, but eh, he flunked in eighth grade. Oh well, he never got along with that graduating class. So now, he's with the graduating Class of 2006. He's a pretty nice guy (when he wants to be!) and I like to bug him a lot. He finds it scary that I know way more about him that it's like I can read his mind or something. But really, I can't. He's WAY taller than me--6'11", I think? And he's seventeen. I really can pass off as his daughter! Well, except for maybe the height difference. I wholeheartedly call him "Daddy"... as well as cause trouble just to get my daily "SHUT UP YUU!" Heh. But it's way fun to see him mad. ^^
The name of my band mom is Rena. She's actually someone I've known for 5 years. She's very quiet, sweet, and gentle--reason why Daddy likes her so much. A lot of people used to (and still do sometimes!) think we are sisters or somehow related. Well, they should be happy now, seeing how I kind of am!
There's also my aunties Stacey and Danielle (who LOVE to pick on Nohiro a lot!) my stepbro, Peter (who personally I think is pretty cute... hey, he's not REALLY my stepbro! >>), and my sister, Ariel. Ariel, I've known since middle school. She's cool. Seeing how she became part of the family after me, she's supposed to be my "little sister", but she acts like an older sister, hehe. Peter--I've known since Band Camp (along with my aunties) and he's really cool. He gets along with all the freshies (freshman) well. Stacey and Danielle... they understand me real well. n_n Stacey acts more motherly than my mom, lol. xd She calls me "hun" and everything. Danielle is like a big sister to me. Really nice too.
Now, here's the catch about my band family. You see, it didn't start out with the mommy and daddy "being married". Er... you see, Nohiro and Rena aren't going out. But knowing Nohiro so well, I found out he's deeply in love with her... and well, Rena's never been sure if she could go out. The family all started out during--guess what?--Band Camp.
This one time, at Band Camp, Nohiro met Rena for the first time. His heart was already broken practically a thousand times and was about to give up. According to him, he thought he could just live alone. Hell, he could just not live at all. He was really struggling in life and he couldn't take it, but something about her made him reconsider. The feeling he got from her wasn't bad... it was odd, but not bad at all... Perhaps she was "the One" for him?
Now, being the nosy person that I am, I found out all this stuff without knowing him. It had been the one-year anniversary of their first meeting by the time I joined on July 14th. It was my first year of Band Camp, and I had quite fun teasing this guy who talked like a Brit, and ended up finding out even more. After having so many troubles of not having a nice, real dad around, I became to call him "daddy". Soon, we refered to her as "mommy". Mommy doesn't seem to mind, although she kind of avoided me for a while after I told her... but the next day, she was fine.
So, in the band's terms, my Mommy and Daddy well... yeah. They "had me", but they never got married. Daddy wants to win Mommy's heart. Daddy didn't want me to bother him that much, so he "adopted" my step brother, and turns out, I had a sister as well. My aunties... well, Stacey comes from my Mommy's side (basically, she gets along with Rena more) and Danielle's from my Daddy's side. It's all good.
Ok, I know, I'm rambling... but I just have to get this all out! Hehe. Today, after practice, there was a meeting for the band booster club. The band stayed back and stuffs, so yeah. Mommy seemed to be avoiding Daddy and me all of a sudden, and I think she really is annoyed by me... I think I got her mad at me! She wouldn't accept my hug. ._. Er, anyway, so it was only Daddy, Bro, and me in the other room--along with some of the other peoples in the band. They're so mean! I tend to spend more time with Nohiro than Rena does (because Rena usually doesn't spend time with him... for some reason). Because of that, they think we're going out. Ew. Going out with my band Dad? Oo Weird! Anyway, yeah. We got teased a lot because we were laying down on the floor, and I had my head on his stomach. What? His tummy's soft and perfect like a pillow!
It was a mistake to lay down like that though. Peter was like, "Nohiro! Shame on you, you Les!" Of course, that might be offending not only Nohiro, but yeah... lesbian couples, but trust me... There are a lot of different band families. ^^; Anyway, I was going to tell Peter to come down on the floor so I could slap him easier, but instead he took it differently. "What, you want me to join you two?" was all he said! While the whole room was distracted with laughter, he took off his pants. GOOD THING THERE WERE P.E. SHORTS UNDER THEM! Oh God, band people are crazy!
But yeah... s**t like that happens. It's funny. Like, for example, a bit after, one of the drummers, Sasha, had her real brothers come in and they wreaked havoc. So hilairious! Oh, and Daddy had surgery on his toe... and they wrapped it in purple... stuff. Lol, he has a Barney toe! xd
There's something I find odd though... Daddy usually only tickles me. Which has left people to CONSTANTLY think that we actually like each other. Despite this, he still does it. I know it's a dad thing to pick on your daughter and tickle them and everything, but yeah... OK, ENOUGH OF THAT!
ANYWAY, what does this have to do with Rei? Well... she's been wondering what the bloody hell I've been doing gone lately, and yeah. Hehe, I told her all this stuff and she was all weirded out. I think she's slightly scared of me now, but she's very happy that I've been in pretty good moods. And I am too. ^_^ Hehe, I did mention to Daddy that he "might" be a Grandpa. He's really skeptical about if I'm going out with anyone like that, but I'm really not that kind of person! I have pretty good morals, I guess... I wonder what his reaction would be if he met Rei. After all, she just lives beyond the portal...
OH OH! I can't believe I didn't mention--My baby has grown up into such a beautiful young lady! I can't believe it! Now she's physically (ok, and mentally) older than me, and taller than me! This is so unfair. I bet you, that the way it's going to be is that I'm going to end up being the daughter, and she's going to be acting like the mother. But I'm so proud of her... able to get through all these hardships in her life to be able to choose such a profound way to live. As for me, I have this feeling that no matter how old I will get, I'll forever stay a child. Just you see. Not even my very own daughter can change me. Not even a daughter.
We had a talk the other night, about her living with Onuris. After a long debate, and me whining like "a kindergartener", we have come to a decision together. As long as Onuris DOESN'T touch Rei first, I'll be fine. Rei's the older one of the couple, and I'm sure she won't mind waiting a while before... yeah. Besides, I don't want to suddenly find out that I'm a grandmother any time soon! I think though, before Rei moves into the house, I'll have to talk to Onuris. I know my baby isn't a baby anymore, but there's this motherly side of me that just HAS to talk to her boyfriend. I just want to make sure, you know? I know Onu is a really great guy and everything... After all, Rei did choose her life path because of him. I just hope I don't scare him. I bet that's the last thing Rei would ever want.
Well, I better get to bed. School tomorrow, and I have to pass off some songs for Marching Band. ... Rei says that she's alright with my busy schedule, but I can't help wonder, is she really? All I want is for her to be honest with me about this.... Well, ok, that's it. Night! The Band Family nowadays has broken up and not too much is remembered. Some small families remain, but because of relationships, like Yuumei's and Nohiro's, that has changed dramatically. Danielle is more like a sister-figure to Yuumei, and Rena has become just a friend. A very distant one... Stacey is moving, but is the loveable pet bunny of the band that everyone (but Nohiro) wants to kidnap and keep her from moving back to Maryland. Peter's no longer in the Marching Band. Kidani has left. But "Uncle Agena", as Hinote refers to him, will always be the mob boss.

Her relations with Yuu helped her get through the fact that she is a grim reaper who kills people in daily life which can be traumatizing for the demon wolf. She would do anything for Yuu-chan that is possible and fears being alone for her whole life, but still not capable for loving either.Hinote's Friends and Aquaintances Name: Luna Note's Nickname for her: n/a Description: One of the first kids Hinote has met. Name: Sachiya Note's Nickname for him: Sachy Description: I guess it's safe to say that Sachiya is Hinote's best friend! They got to know each other very well the day they met and have exchanged feathers. Perhaps a sign of good friendship? Note looks forward to seeing him all the time.
Name: Keith Note's Nickname for him: Keif Description: Another boy that Hinote has met recently. He's been nice enough to share his dragon plushie--and even let Hinote hold onto it!--and talk to her. Perhaps this trust will be a building block to another good friendship.
Family Pets Name: Tsuki Gender: Male Species: Puri Age: 2 years old Description: Yuu's first and oldest companion since she moved to Gaia. He's been quite loyal and friendly, but over the years, as he grows old, he has calmed down. After all, he's been an adult for most of his life, and has grandchildren!

Name: Hiromi Gender: Male Species: Sakur Age: 2 years old Description: This little guy showed up some time after Yuki. Yuu bought a mysterious egg, which did crazy things and hatched this once L33T talker. Now, he cooks food when the Tenshi household is too lazy to. He makes grrrrreat cookies!
Name: Ame Gender: Female Species: D'shi Age: 1 year old Description: A deer-like creature was found on Puri Island (the Island Yuu got Tsuki, Yuki, and Hiromi from as well) and loves to take care of the garden. Although she has a mate and another child, she hasn't seen them. Thankfully, her daughter lives with this family to keep her company. She is long overdue to evolve.
Name: Tsuchi Gender: Female Species: D'shi Age: 1 year old Description: Ame's daughter. Isn't she pretty? Quiet and shy, she helps her mother around the garden. She, too, is overdue to evolve. What has happened to the d'shi species anyway?
Name: Bluesy Gender: Female Species: Cat. A Normal Cat! Age: Unknown Description: Along with Nohiro moving in, he brought along a couple of his cats. Hinote's favorite just happens to be Bluesy, who is a very sweet and cute ball of fluff... not like the other two (Koni and Milky) that just lie around the house.

[yearning for something I shall never have.]It all started during a Week of Depression, and a letter that shattered the soul.
It was a cloudy Tuesday after school in Kapolei High School, and Yuu had rushed into the band room, looking for someone. 'Where is he?' she thought to herself, as she literally threw her backpack on the floor and stared at her surroundings.
The room was enormous compared to her, walls of white lined with dozens of lockers of various sizes, blending in. The fairly flimsy risers stood proudly, all watching the podium that rose before them--either that or the giant TV screen that almost overshadowed it. Most of the chairs and stands were put away because of the class before, but a few were scattered on the risers, forgotten. It was silent in the gaping space. It was like it was deserted.
The little girl sighed as she ran one hand through her long, black hair. The other hand reached into her pocket as she pulled out a folded piece of paper. Carefully, she opened it and reread it once more. September 21, 2004 Dear Yuumei, You're right. There is something wrong. Lately I have been thinking that it's time to move on. I feel that I have waited for Rena for longer than I should have. If I continued to go after her, it will only cause more trouble. I feel that you and Rena have been drifting because of me. It is my fault. Don't try to talk me out of it. After depression, feeling lost, getting mad at you, it's all my fault. I'm sorry me and mommy won't really get together.
Love Dad, Nohiro Gamurot
PS: It's not your fault. Everything that happened between Nohiro and her suddenly came back, as she folded the letter back to its original state. She had only known Nohiro for a few months, but it felt like forever. And... to be able to hear his voice in writing made it hurt so much.
'Why wouldn't he tell me anything?' she thought to herself. 'I knew something was wrong. But he wouldn't tell me at all. He can't hide his feelings from me... Why didn't he tell me sooner? What if he decides to give up on life too? HE CAN'T DO THAT! He can't do that to himself...'
Inside, the teenager began to cry. Her exterior was solid, and neutral. She still couldn't find the tears she wanted to cry since this morning... since last week. She had realized something she didn't want to then. She realized... that she fell in love with him.
And it hurt so much inside because of what she knew. She knew he was in love with Rena, the most thoughtful, shyest, and sweetest girl known on the face on the planet. She knew that even if Nohiro liked someone else, all of his thoughts would just go back to Rena. He couldn't get Rena out of his mind, and that he felt she was "the One". It killed Yuumei inside, because despite her infatuation, she had to hide it. She had to hide it because she promised him--before they were friends, before they were "siblings", before they were "family"--that she would help him win her heart. And all she wanted was him to be happy. She knew she couldn't make him happy... only Rena could do that.
As minutes crucially passed by, Yuu paced. Suddenly, as she looked up, the door creaked as it opened, and the tall figure that was Nohiro walked in. Before he could even put down his bag, his "daughter" rushed to his side. "Nohiro," she addressed him instead of the usual "Daddy". "We need to talk. Please?" For once, her voice was low and serious--so uncharacteristically like her. Nohiro looked at her through misty lenses, and nodded slightly as he took off his bag. He said not a word. "Ok... is the soda room alright?" He shrugged. "I don't recommend it though..." "... Alright... want to walk outside then?" He just shook his head. Yuu was getting slightly frustrated. She grabbed him by the wrist then, and walked towards the small room in between the two band rooms--the soda machine room.
The reason why it was called that was only because it had the soda machine in there. It was just a small space that connected Mr. Agena (the Marching Band teacher)'s room with Mr. Kidani (the Concert Band teacher)'s room. Quite a few people passed through here, but it wasn't as busy as the hallway at least.
They sat down as Yuu handed him another letter, this time by her. "Read this, Nohiro. It's important." He did as he was said, but only after glancing at it, he folded it back to how he received it. It was then silence became a murderer. Yuu moved to sit in front of him after being so still. She couldn't take it. This was going no where. "... Nohiro, how long have you been like this?" "I've been thinking this for quite a while," he choked, as he stared away and fiddled with the letter in his hands. "Why didn't you tell anyone?" "...Because I wasn't sure." "... Well, you could have told me, Nohiro."
... Silence.
As the time grew older, people began to come and go. But the conversation was the same. He wouldn't talk.
"P-Please, Nohiro," Yuu persisted. "Please, say something!"
The only response she got was tears.
Yuumei stared in shock. She never seen him cry before... and here he was, someone who always seemed strong... someone who knew how to hide their feelings from almost everyone... crying. Her hand clenched into a fist and pounded on the floor hard. Oh, the pain she could feel... and what made it worse, was most of it was her own. She wanted to say something right, she wanted to wipe away his tears and embrace him... to kiss him... but none of that would help him. She was useless. She couldn't do anything. And what upset her most was... she couldn't cry. Not one single tear.
He didn't speak to anyone that day from then on. Not even Yuu.
It was the next afternoon, and Yuumei still felt horrible. All she could imagine was Nohiro's face full of apathy for what was happening in his surroundings... tears rolling down his flushed cheek. All he could think about was Rena at that time. Only Rena. He couldn't let go, and the thought of giving up on being with her killed him. It was hard to see it, but the young teen who thought of her dear friend felt that her fragile body and soul was going to shatter into a million pieces. She couldn't cry. She couldn't cry as much as she wanted. She had no tears to give. And yet that image of Nohiro just broke her heart. Not even the young man's face she had seen today that had brightened a bit overnight could make her sure that he was alright.
'He hides his feelings too much,' she thought to herself as she noticed him walking to the band room after school. The bell rang, and she had departed from the flock of bustling students that came out of G Building. She trudged along, heading in the same direction. 'Why didn't he tell me sooner? ... He should have. That's why I'm here, right? I want to help him so much...but he won't let me. Nohiro knows that I know him so damn well...He should have told me. Even if he was unsure. He should have told me...
'And... I should have helped him.' She bowed her head in silent shame as she entered through the main door of the edifice, slipping her tiny shoes off and into an empty slot next to his shoes. It didn't take long for her to get past the percussion section (that had sectionals today) and into Mr. Kidani's Office, where Danielle sat next to the band teacher's desk, and of course, Nohiro laying down on the couch.
That moment, he wasn't her "band father". He wasn't her "brother". He was someone she cared about so much. He was someone she was incredibly worried about. He was her friend.
She placed her bag down on the floor, and walked towards where his head laid. He was hogging all the space on "his bed". "Move over," she mumbled a bit. He seemed to be better than earlier. It was like he was back to normal.
Nohiro only smirked. "Why should I? Oof!" All he got in response was the little girl sitting on his stomach, pouting. "Ai, you! I'll tickle you, I swear!" Yup, he was definitely back to normal. His hands were already reaching out to grab her, but she lifted her foot and aimed it lower on his body--his crotch. His eyes widened at his silent "daughter". "Oh, you wouldn't!" He began to protect that spot.
A sly grin gradually formed on Yuu's face as she sat at the top of the couch, and lifted her leg even higher.
"That's it!" There was only one option for the guy, and that was to attack first. Yuumei exploded into giggles as she fell into her father's arms, trying to get away--or at least stop from getting tickled. He was definitely feeling better.
After a little "attack war", "halftime shows" provided by friends coming in and going out of the office, and distractions, the two came to a truce, and Yuumei found it comfortable just laying her head on Nohiro's stomach and laying across the table that stood before it. Because of the silly battle, their glasses sat on the table by the computers, at a safe range. The room was filled with another band family as well, but it didn't matter that much right now to her. Yuumei looked up at Nohiro, speaking in her soft, child-like voice. "So," she began. "You're feeling better?"
He nodded; a calm and neutral look on his face. "Yeah. I thought about it, and I decided I'm temporarily not going to give up yet." Nohiro paused, collecting his thoughts and slightly staring at his shirt pocket on his chest. "Not until I find out how she really feels...
"I think the reason why I held on so for so long is because I never knew how she felt." His eyes rose to look at his daughter. She shook her head positively, and smiled a bit.
"I'm glad to hear you're doing better." The girl looked away for a moment, hesitant to say what she wanted to next. "Do... do you know how worried I've been? I... couldn't really go to sleep last night... and with all the stress I have, with school problems, and family problems at home... and I haven't been eating well--" "Why haven't you been eating well?" Nohiro's eyes narrowed, concerned. "... I've been too busy to eat." What a lie.
Just as he was about to scold her for the mistake was doing, Roy--who leaned over the space just above the young man's head--took out something silver, about the size of a card... or a cell phone from his shirt pocket. "Hey Nohiro, what's this?"
"Give me that," he snapped as he grabbed it out of the big boulder of a man's hand and rummaged through the pocket. "That's the spare battery I have for my cell phone." As he placed it in the slot, he pulled out the folded letter Yuumei had written him the other day. Her eyes widened, as big as saucers. She remembered yesterday... from the moment she had given it to him, he had opened it, glanced at it, and folded it back up. He held it in his hands for an eternity it seemed, through the silent conversation. Her hand brushed against her jacket pocket, where his letter laid.
She spoke up, at her normal volume, as she pointed to the object. "Hey, why do you still have that?"
"Oh, this?" he tucked it back in the pocket as he spoke. "Well, I didn't finish reading it because I was too upset yesterday."
Yuu's jaw dropped slightly. She thought he was crying partially because of what she wrote in the letter that whole time! But he didn't? "What?!"
He continued. "I finished reading it this morning. I'm glad you weren't around... because I was crying after I read it all."
"W-wh-what?" her voice trembled, as she turned away, staring at her feet. She let out a heavy sigh and leaned her head back a bit. "I'm sorry... wait! Why were you crying?" She jerked up, confused. What did she say to make an almost-fully grown man cry?
Nohiro pulled the small folded paper with his giant hands from the pocket once more, and opened up. His eyes scanned it for a moment, until he passed it onto Yuu. "Last paragraph," he told her to read.
In her messy handwriting, it read:Quote: At least tell me this... do you still think she is the one? Do you really think that Rena is? ... whatever decision you make, I'll be there for you, Nohiro. Just promise me you won't do anything... drastic... If you ever need to talk, I'll be here.
With much love, Yuumei Her eyes gazed back at him in silence. She wasn't sure if she was blushing, but inside, this strange feeling inside took over her. What the hell was happening to her?
After struggling so hard with her emotions, she waved the paper furiously, and yet talked in a concerned voice. "What about it made you cry?"
Nohiro shrugged. "Well... you were in such a fragile state, and... you made me think. That's why I came to the decision to temporarily go after her."
Silence engulfed the two of them for a moment, as her dark eyes softened, staring at him. He slightly looked away himself. Nohiro didn't get that much sleep himself, so he leaned his head against the back of the seat and closed his eyes.
... and opened them back up, when a fragile, slender body wrapped around him momentarily. Yuumei leaned more into him, as he embraced her back, trying to hide her emotions. Suddenly reality shook them apart, as a voice cried, "Eww, lesbian relationship!"
At that moment, the two shot glares at the giggling Yoko, and reached out to grab her. "YOKO! GET OVER HERE!" They yelled in unison, but the only girl in the relationship ran on after her, grinning inside.

[A mistake I have made through my confusion]
September 24, 2004Friday sneaked up on everyone, just as the gloomy emotions had. Seventh period--Freshman Band--whizzed by like nothing, and the bell rang for freedom. Tonight was the first football game of the season that was going to be televised... and it was also the last week of the quarter.
If you walked into the main band room (which Mr. Kidani's office was in), you could see dozens of band people half-dead, dazed and hypnotized by what was on the big TV screen. Walk past that, and open the door into the teacher's office, you would enter the recent sleeping quarters of four students--with no teacher around.
It was a quarter past two, and night had encountered the high school students imprisoned in this blissful silence. The three men had fell asleep--Roy and Nohiro on the couch, and Peter on the teacher's luxurious faux leather chair--while a child laid down in the middle of the same sofa, caught in the middle. Her head rested on her father's tummy, as she covered her weary head with her hooded sweatshirt. She had awakened, and didn't want to disturb anyone. Warily, her eyes peeked through the dark material, as she stared upon her band stepbrother. Something he said today made her think. 'Did you really mean it, Peter? Do you really think I'm that cool? ... that I deserve someone better than Nohiro?' she sighed. 'Because I don't think I do... I don't really deserve anyone...'
Yuu only stayed there, and noticed her "father"'s hand. It was so warm, compared to her own. As much as she wanted to squeeze it... she withdrew and waited for the time to pack up. It wouldn't be too long... until she had to get up, and Nohiro would rush off to look at his "Sleeping Beauty", who was resting outside.
No one noticed the empty bottle of liquor that stood on the table. No one noticed who drank it out of depression. It was a secret between her and the silence.
Four thirty rolled on by, and the graveyard soon became a bustling group of people, healthy and alive. The Band had suddenly gone from wearing their individuality on themselves to a unified army, in white, black, teal and silver. After a quick review and playing around with cameras, they all loaded into the buses and were off to the stadium. Flutes, Clarinets, Trumpets, Horns and Saxes were all in one bus, while the other was loaded with Lower Brass, Percussion, and Color Guard. It was a fairly quiet ride on the first bus, as usual. Then again, Yoko, and her "band father" Val were on the bus. The saxophones always made noise.
The football game liven everything up, as usual. School spirit boomed every touchdown, every first down... hell, every time they got the ball! The Hurricanes were winning, and all was good!
By halftime however, the opposing team made one more touchdown--10 to 6. The Pearl City Marching Band was marching during halftime, so the Kapolei Band went on the opposing side to watch. That's when Yuu met up with Nohiro and Rena again.
Mommy and Daddy always sat by each other at the games, and Yuu had to be with her sis and the rest of the fluties. At least her step-brother sat in front of them as a clarinet player. But now, they could stand with anyone in the band, regardless of their section.
Up the stairs, Rena and Yuu ran up while they continued their endless poke war they had started since they first met. All you could really hear was "Poke!" Poke!" "Pokity poke poke poke!" all the way up to the top.
When they reached the top, Yuu realized Nohiro smirking. The words, "See, you two fight!" were just dancing around him, waiting for him to say it. All Yuumei did though, was took a step away from Rena--gesturing for him to stand next to her. His eyes widened, and glared. "Nice try, Yuu!" The girl giggled as she scooted back next to Rena. It didn't take long before Rena found her best friend, Katai, and sat on the bleachers.
The Marching Band that was performing was ENORMOUS. They could barely all fit on the field it seemed, and it was a mess when they made their formations. Nevertheless, no one could hide the fact that their sound was incredible. Yuu mentioned a lot of flaws to Nohiro, just as Mr. Agena had told them to, but he only nodded. What was he doing? ... It took her the end of the show for her to realize he was staring at Rena.
+ + + + + + +
I can't stand it anymore. The way he looks at her...It just hurts so much inside. He'll never look at me that way. No one would.
What's the purpose of living anymore? I can't do anything right... I'm just hurting people... hurting Nohiro. And it's just hurting me in the end.
These people... the band. All of them are great, but... I just can't help it. I know just staring into their eyes, that they must hate me. It's the same look in my family's eyes. That's why they kicked me out.
Rei must hate me so much now, never being there for her anymore. But what else can I give her now? I'm only a teenager, and she is now a youth. My baby girl is gone... and there is no purpose for my life anymore. There's nothing for me...
+ + + + + + +
11:00 PM. Hurricanes win 21 to 10. At least, that's what it was when they left--4 minutes on the clock. The band was back in the busses, and rolecall was being taken. "Yoko!" "Here!" "Val!" "Here, yo!" "Kevin!" "Here." "Jessica!" "Here too~" "Liz?" "Here!" "Gamz and Callejo?" "Here!" "Here." "Yuu?" ... "Yuu...?"
Everyone's eyes wandered to where the smallest band member had sat on the bus before. Her seat was empty, except for her instrument and stand that someone had brought for her. She was missing. Nohiro looked at Rena instantly. She was staring straight back at him, as their eyes met and nodded. They were both thinking the same thing as they got up and ran to go look for their band daughter. "We'll be back with her," he promised.
+ + + + + + +
It's so warm now... on the bare earth...skin against skin...shadows nipping at me. I can feel my eyes lower. My body feels great pleasure, but my soul does not. I'm torn. But it doesn't matter anymore. Not anymore. Unknown whispers sweet nothings to me. He wants to take away my pain. But I'm broken, and un-repairable. I wish he was here though... If only I didn't hide things myself... why am I like this? Why can't I be selfless when the time's right? Why can't I be perfect? Unknown shadow... just do what you want. My soul will be freed time. Rape me of my innocence. I don't need it anymore. I'll be gone in a single shot of a gun.
+ + + + + + +
"Yuu!" "OH MY GOD, GET AWAY FROM HER NOW, DAMMIT!" Whack! The shadowy figure fell to the ground.
Yuumei was half-conscious as Rena cradled her in her arms, like a protective mother. There was worry in her eyes that the girl had never seen before from this emotionless and silent beauty, and for once... Rena was embracing her wholeheartedly. She never did that. Not even to her mother. "Reki," she whispered her dear friend's special nickname softly in her "daughter"'s ear. She had given her that nickname first, meaning pebble; and only she used it for her. "Are you alright?"
"Mmmm..." the little girl stirred. Her eyes were half-open, as she stared into Rena's dark brown eyes. She mouthed something, unable to find her voice... but she forced herself to say it. She called her by what was forbidden. "Mom... mommy..." she whispered, slivers of tears spilling from her eyes. The tears she couldn't find. The tears she wanted to cry for such a long time. "Mommy... I'm sorry... I'm sorry..."
"What... what are you sorry about, Reki?" Rena's eyes widened with surprised as she comforted her dear friend. She... called her mom. Was she being delusional? Or... was she really calling her that for a reason? She watched as Yuu's fragile hand reached down at her thigh, and pulled a gun out from no where. "YUU! DON'T!"
It was no use, it seemed. Rain fell harder than ever that night, and the stars were blinded by the stadium lights. The moon became her only judge tonight. Everything about her identity began to unravel, as the fire of innocence in her eyes died away, and her wings sprouted from her weak back. Her hair fell upon her shoulders as she broke away from Rena's embrace, and pointed the gun straight at her own heart. "I'm sorry for everything, mom..." she whispered softly. "Rena... I'm sorry. I never meant to do all the cruel things I've did. Goodbye." And with that, she pulled the trigger.
The sound of the gun shot pierced the atmosphere of the vivid game, and hushed everyone for a moment. What happened? Did someone get hurt? ... did someone die?
The weapon fell into a puddle soon enough, as Nohiro gripped Yuu's arm firmly away from her. In a split second, he had kept her from losing her life. "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING, YUU?" He yelled at the apathetic teen. "WHY THE BLOODY HELL ARE YOU TRYING TO KILL YOURSELF? Why?!" He fell to his knees as he finally let go of her.
Mute. She was mute. With the bullet, her soul was gone. She just stared into nothingness, and collapsed into a puddle of tears herself. "You wouldn't understand! You just wouldn't understand at all!" she cried through the pain. "I don't belong here! I NEVER belonged here!"
"Don't say that, Reki," Rena countered, pulling Yuu back into her arms. "You do belong here... Don't cry..."
"I can't stop!" she wailed and shook her head furiously. She wasn't going to let anyone change her mind. "I DON'T BELONG, AND YOU KNOW IT! You all know it! ... Dammit, Life's s**t, and I can't stand it anymore! Just let me take my life now, and save me the pain!" "I'm not going to let you take your life, Reki." "THEN LET GO OF ME!" "No." "LET GO OF ME!!!" "... No." "I HATE YOU!!!" she burst out screaming, trying to push away Rena. But she wasn't going to let go. Not now, not ever. Rena just held on to her, hushing her like a mother would to a baby fussing.
"I know you don't mean that, my dear daughter." She brushed Yuu's head softly. Everything that this immature girl had done to her--all the teases, all the matchmaking jokes, all the times she called her mommy--it didn't matter. Rena knew of her life... of never having a loving family, and a mother that would care for her the way her own parents did. And Yuumei needed a mother right now. She needed one now more than ever. And the closest thing she had to a mother... was her.
Yuu buried her face into Rena's shoulder as she stained her shirt with tears. "Mom... I'm sorry... I'm sorry that I tried to push you to be with daddy," she mumbled through her sobs. Nohiro watched in awe, surprised at how Rena was taking this. "Mom... I'm sorry... I... I wanted you and Daddy to be together, because I wanted you both to be happy... because I know how much he loves you. But... but I've been keeping myself from fulfilling that. "Mommy... Rena... I'm sorry... I'm really sorry... but please, give Nohiro a chance... I know you've heard he's sweet, he's nice and all that s**t... but I promise you... all he wants... is to be with you... "I'm sorry I couldn't be a better friend... I'm so... sorry..." Her eyes lowered, as the darkness set in.
Rena looked up at Nohiro, who was blushing red now. They exchanged silent thoughts with each other of what their daughter spilled, unsure of what it all meant. Finally, the young man came closer to Rena, as he lifted the fragile body into his arms. "I guess we should be going back now," he said, as the reality of the football game resumed. Suddenly, the smell of alcohol filled his lungs... so that was it.
Everyone was rushing to get out of the stadium, but the couple was able to push their way through, with Yuu. After walking through Hell, they finally made it to the bus. Everyone was dead from waiting, but as soon as they saw the teenager's body in Nohiro's arms, they thought of the worse.
Janice, the Drum Major rushed to the front of the bus. "Is she alright?"
Rena and Nohiro nodded sadly. They weren't sure what to say. They kept on walking towards their seats, in which the sophomore sat in front of the junior. As Rena sat down, he gestured to have her take care of the sleeping Yuumei. "Want her to stay with you during the ride? I think she needs your comfort."
She only smiled and nodded a no slowly. "No, Nohiro," she told him. "I want you to comfort Yuu. Trust me... I think that's what she would want right now." At that moment, she embraced him a bit--not wanting to disturb her "daughter". "She needs her "Dad"."

Black... it's fading now... Am I alive, now? ... I guess I am. This feels so familiar... It's warm... but not like earlier... it's the warmth he always gave me... The stars... they pierce the sky, shining like tears now... The tears I saw Rena crying. I never thought that people would care for me... But how can they, after all I've done to them? To myself? ...He's asleep. He's holding me in his arms, like a father holds his daughter. I always loved it when he would do that. I'm not afraid now to hold his hand...his hand so warm, and comforting. But God, why? Why am I still here? Why am I in his arms? ... Rena deserves to be in his arms. He deserves to be able to hold her until the end of the world... God, I'm sorry... I've done a bad thing... and I made it blind me endlessly... I've done a bad thing... And I can't take it back.
I fell in love with someone who will never feel the same way towards me.
I've broken a promise.
And... I've given up on myself.
God... forgive me. I've done such bad things...Forgive me for my sins.
