Pregnancy Roleplay

Sun Mar 20, 2005 10:05 am
Ursah Bunny
Months of effort had yielded nothing. Each visit to the clinic was more disappointing than the last, and each chipped a piece away from the supporting column of Ursah's resolve. She imagined herself sometimes as a dried up husk, a shell that held its form, but fragile and lifeless on the inside.

He was there to comfort her with each new wound. Every week brought new tears, fresh pain that made her question the desire to continue. She did not understand the gentle smiles he gave her, but took comfort in the presance of his arms, the cloth of his shirt near her cheek, wetten with her own sorrow.

Others she had met during her weekly visits had had more success. In that time, some of them had already had successful pregnancies, new children of their own. In all things, Ursah felt inadequate. She began to wonder if she was unworthy of motherhood.

Visits to the exclusive clinic were expensive. She questioned, sometimes, her masochistic journey each week, wondering if it would ever be fruitful... she actually paid for this disappointment! But many sources said that the GMFC was the best clinic in its field, and she knew that she would find the money for as long as it took. For as long as she could bear it.

Ursah sighed, and stepped up to the drugstore counter, a pregnancy test in hand. She didn't feel like waiting for the clinic to call her. Self-consciously she stuffed it in a brown paper bag, and then pushed through the shop door to make her way home.

Lord Niku
She had come home only minutes before. A sad hello, followed by a sullen trip to the bathroom, a small, brown paper bag clutched in her hand. But then again, almost everything she did these days seemed sad. Today would be no exception.

Niku's tail drooped slightly at the prospect. Ursah had gone to the clinic again today. It would mean more disappointment for her, more grief. Every other week she filled herself with hope, and every other week she came home to the call that deflated her. "We're sorry to report that the test results have returned negative, Ursah," the receptionist would say, genuinely sympathetic at a time when sympathy meant nothing.

She had been inconsolable for days after each call. Niku's best efforts had amounted to small smiles, gentler sobs, and a temporary return to near-normality. But she had never been the same as she had been before her first series of treatments, her first visits to the clinic, and the first disappointing message. Ursah's confidence in herself was shattering, which hurt Niku more than his own feelings of inadequecy, despite the fact that both had been told that they were fully capable of conceiving. Patience was the important part, they said.

Niku closed his eyes as the phone abruptly started ringing. All patience has its ends, he thought to himself, his ears flattening briefly. He opened his eyes and turned toward the phone with the intent of answering for Ursah while she was busy. As his hand touched the receiver, though, Ursah called loudly to him from the hallway, and her rapid footsteps raced toward him. Niku pulled his hand away from the phone as she cleared the doorframe.

"Look!" she exclaimed, her expression describable only as radiant. She shot out a hand that held a small white object with a small window carved into it. Niku squinted at the thing a moment, without recognition, before his eyes focused on the small blue plus sign in the middle of the recess. His eyes shot up to meet hers and saw the tears of joy that rolled down those smiling cheeks. He wrapped his arms tightly around her, hoisting up and lightly spinning her around, holding her even tighter as he set her down. The answering machine picked up the call after the fourth ring.

"We're proud to report that your test results have returned positive, Ursah," said the receptionist cheerfully. "Congratulations to both of you. We hope to see you again soon."

Life had changed drasticly since the happy news. Everything seemed more vibrant to Ursah, the world more full of potential, more lovely. She was even looking at Niku in a different way.

Their relationship had always been a very childish one, full of a lot of play. She saw another side of him now, a very adult side, one that was caring and cautious. He did all that he could not to upset her in any way, even caving in and allowing her to choose the nursery's wallpaper herself, a sickeningly sunny yellow (much to his dismay). He catered to her every whim, and wouldn't let her do so much as lift a finger to anything that was remotely straining. Most of the time she loved being pampered, but once in a while she felt like a baby herself for her own decreasing lack of responsibility.

She was eating for two now, craving both cherry cheesecake and dill pickles, though thankfully not at the same time. With Niku's willingness to cook for her, she wondered if her growing belly was partially due to calories rather than pregnancy... she still had not felt the baby moving, though the doctors assured her that she would soon.

Things were going well. She was going to be a mother. She couldn't have been more ecstatic.

Ursah sat at the couch, various textured papers strung out all over the coffee table. She was carefully cutting the shape of a rubber duck into a sheet of thick yellow cornhusk paper, over and over. A few partially-assembled ducks lay to the side, orange beaks glued in place, whispy wings watercolored in a light wash of brown and highlighted with a brighter white.

If anyone had asked her what she was doing, she wasn't entirely certain that she could have told them anything apart from making ducks. She liked them. She thought that they went well with the wallpaper. She wasn't entirely sure what purpose they would serve.

Perhaps they would go in a scrapbook, she mused. Or perhaps she would string them into a mobile to hang over the baby's crib.

The baby... She smiled at the simple idea of it, and rested a hand to her swollen belly. She sank back against the couch, eyes closed, a duck balanced on her belly as if it were seated upon a throne.

Lord Niku
Niku gently lifted the small, paper duck off Ursah's belly and placed it beside the small army already arrayed on the table. He lightly rested his hand where the duck had been, the firm skin beneath Ursah's maternity blouse warm even through the fabric. He looked at her closed eyes for a while before slowly lifting her glasses off her sleeping face and setting them beside the rows of ducks.

As he went to the linen chest he couldn't help but worry if their child would like ducks or not. The silly little things consumed him these days, it seemed. Were Ursah's eggs all right? Was the toast too dark? Should he take time off work to make sure she didn't over-exert herself like she had when she had wallpapered the nursery? She kept insisting over and over again that he was fretting too much, but her value in his eyes had more than doubled since that phone call.

She seemed so much happier these days, even more than before she had begun going to the clinic. And despite her protests, she was more willing to be pampered, as well. Hopefully she would stop complaining about his constant attention and concern before long.

He fixed his eyes on her as he returned from the chest behind the couch and watched her as he draped a blanket over her sleeping body. He gently kissed her forehead and smiled at her. So many naps recently. Perhaps it meant something? He would have to ask the doctors during their next check-up.

For now he had other, more domestic matters to attend to.

Ursah found the piled shag carpet at a flea market. She'd went shopping for a crib, but instead came home with something that resembled an eccentric frizzy anghora sheep.

Did sheep come in anghora? She didn't really care... the item was rather unique, and for some reason it seemed to be a wonderful focal point for a soft and lighthearted room.

Ursah hadn't been out much in the past few weeks, and was starting to feel like an invalid. Out of nowhere, one day it hit her: She was over halfway through her pregnancy, and the baby's room wasn't anywhere near complete. She scolded herself for her neglect, and used it as an excuse to get out of the house.

Getting out of the house was easy. Getting in the house with a heavy carpet rolled up under your arm was another story. Dragging the frizzled mass through the living room she overturned not one, but two potted plants. The carpet roll refused to bend much, and she had to shove it through the nursery door with all her weight.

As Ursah and the carpet burst through the door, it fell to the floor and unrolled like magic. She grinned, and tugged at one of the corners to place it square in the center of the room. Stooping down, exhausted, she ran her fingers through the plush carpet, and smiled. It felt so nice that she decided to lay down and test its softness.

By the time Niku came from work, there was dirt all over the living room floor, and a very happy bunny asleep on a bit of carpet.

The days seemed to be getting longer. Ursah found herself able to do less and less, impended by the strain of her ever-enlarging belly. She doubted she would ever grow accustomed to the extra bulk - she was forever knocking things off of counters. Just the other day she had singed one of her favorite maternity shirts while trying to fix Niku a breakfast of scrambled eggs. After that, he hadn't permitted her near the stove.

It wasn't only that she was helpless and overencumbered. While each hour drug by painfully slowly, she knew that she had less and less time to finish the baby's room. She'd taken a long hiatus, only ordering a few shelves and some wallpaper border which she still hadn't put up. She doubted that Niku would allow her on the ladder to even try.

Her days were definately growing restless and frustrating, but still she wasn't unhappy. She found herself often resting a hand upon the bulge of her belly, dreaming about the child she would soon have. She spoke to it and even sang sometimes, and couldn't resist pulling up her shirt to watch how her skin would stretch with the kick of the baby's feet.

She was often tired, but she was delighted.

Lord Niku

The days were growing busier as Ursah's belly swelled. Niku found himself doing all kinds of chores and simple fixes these days. He had installed the shelves that Ursah had ordered days ago and had finished the border along the top of the walls only moments before. He had placed an order for a large toy box and a crib, both unfinished oak. Ursah had been rather picky about the colors she allowed in the room in the past, and he wasn't willing to take any more chances.

Despite the assurances that the furniture would arrive on time, Niku often worried whether or not they truly would. Ursah looked more and more ready to burst with each day. He was being protective, needlessly, she often complained, but he only wanted to make sure that everything would be perfect. This child meant everything to her, and he would do his best to see it into the world, complaints or no.

He remembered the day that Ursah bought the rug in the center of the room. She had been sleeping peacefully on it when he arrived home. It actually looked somewhat comfortable right now, despite her insistence that it was itchy. Perhaps he would see if she wanted to go look for curtains this evening. But a quick nap was certainly in order first.

Ursah had heard somewhere that a mother knows when it is time to give birth. That the urge to rearrange furniture or some such kicks in, and that doing so speeds up the birthing process. So it was that naturally Ursah expected to recognize some urge or sensation in the days leading up to the birth of her child...

But by the time Ursah realized that she was in labor, she only had a few split seconds to remark that for her this would be wholly inaccurate.

It began with a tightening of her belly. At first, it frightened Ursah that her muscles seemed to be contracting on their own. She vaguelly wondered if something was going wrong, for a strange and unfamiliar pain had found her - not unbearable, and yet distinctly foreign. She had the urge to sit, or to sink to the floor. To squat or lay down.

Her eyes widened, and she knew. She called out for Niku, leaning against the wall.

Ursah didn't think she had felt anything so comfortable in her life. Warm and ensconced within a fluffy blanket, she lay upon her back, head sinking into a mass of pillows. Her eyelids were heavy, her mind somewhere between the realm of sleep and awake.

She was aware of a warmth against her ribcage, settled into the crook of her arm. Mouth tilting into a tired smile, she moved one hand to stroke Victor's ear, delighting in the contented sound that he made.

She would have to be careful... she was falling asleep with the baby in bed far too much, and was afraid that she would roll over him in her sleep. But she enjoyed these quiet times, perhaps best of all, feeling the soft new skin against her own, smelling the scent of his newness, the tickle of his hair.

She still felt as if she were in a dream half the time. She had tried to conceive for so long, desired this very thing for so long, ached for it with her entire heart for so long that it now seemed unreal that she should know such joy.

She was afraid of waking up and discovering that it was a dream - but after so many days, she had not. And so she settled into a happy routine of feeding, changing, napping and coddling the life that suddenly depended on her. She took him about the house naming shapes and colors. She showed him the grass and the sky. She whispered in his little ear that he was wonderful, and she knew he understood it all.

Victor opened his tiny mouth as he slept and cooed a faint sigh. Ursah smiled, and couldn't restrain a giggle as she observed him. She had wrapped the infant in a fluffy white blanket, and taped a sign to his belly that said: "Look Daddy, I'm a ghost!"

She reached forward to touch his cheek. She smiled again.

Victor's sparkling blue eyes moved back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, following the circling path of a small guppie. Ursah had bought the fish for her son on impulse, noticing his particular affection for a favorite toy - a clear plastic ball with a spinning red fish inside.

Now, he coed and gurgled, laughing at his new pet and slamming his pudgy hands against the ground with glee. Ursah laughed herself, and brushed his dark hair back from his forehead. It was growing fast, but was still soft with newness. Her baby was fat and happy, and as content as his mother.

Lord Niku
Niku watched Victor carefully as the infant tested the volume of his mouth by inserting his tiny balled fist. The behavior was not uncommon for either of them. Since his birth, Victor had, of course, been curious of the world around him. Now that he was growing strong enough to interact with it, the baby was entering the infamous "tasting phase." Everything went into his mouth, from safe things, like hands, fingers, and large toys, to dangerous things, like a loose duck from his mobile or food intended for his ever-growing school of fish.

Niku also found himself simply sitting and observing Victor whenever he was alone with his child. He was never looking for something actively. He was never waiting for something terrible to happen. A quiet awe stole over him every time he had the briefest time to contemplate the small life in front of him. He would occasionally nudge Victor away from a hazard or take something harmful out of the baby's determined grip, but aside from that he needed little other contact. He always treasured the quiet times, and not just purely for the quiet.

A small smile creased his lips. Ursah often hogged Victor to herself, although he did not hold it against her. Victor had been all that she had wanted for years. He was just as happy to see the two of them happy and together. Occasionally Niku managed to pry the child into his own arms, but it was always under his mother's close supervision. It was exactly what he had hoped for in those days before the pregnancy, before the phone call. He certainly begrudged her nothing.

Victor had just pulled a loose carpet tuft into his mouth and was coughing a little bit. Niku immediately changed his mood. A different kind of daddy was needed for this situation. His hands closed around Victor's waist as he started crying. By the time the first tears had fallen, the baby was pressed warmly against Niku's body. Niku's ears perked up as he heard Ursah tumble off the couch in the next room, her nap over immediately. He smiled as he smoothed down Victor's ears and rocked the child back and forth. No wonder Ursah was taking more naps these days.

Ursah wasn't certain what Victor's fascination with fish was, but could only note it as one would note an expensive dress in a store window. When her son was around marine life, his eyes became wells of fascination, his face taking on an almost angelic expression of contentment.

The child could watch the beta fish in his room for hours. He didn't reach for them as many children would, only watched in rapt awe, his tiny friends swimming in lazy patterns.

Gone were the ducks from his nursery. A fanciful thing, anyhow. Ursah had always liked ducks, but Victor was indifferent. Away went the yellow, and on came shades of blue, aquamarine, the greens of the sea. A glass mobile hung near the window like a suncatcher, each dangling fish gleaming rainbows throughout the room.

It was a peaceful place. Ursah was glad that her child seemed quiet and content... he may well not be outgoing, but he seemed a kind soul thusfar. She was proud of her little boy, who seemed to shine intelligence from his eyes.

Ursah Bunny
Ursah Bunny pushed the clinic door with her hind-end, bumping it open as she stepped backwards into the warmer inside. In her arms she carried a floppy-eared child who was bundled up so well from head to toe that only his fox-colored bunny ears were visible behind the wall of fluffy winter cloth and a long scarf wrapped round and round the poor child's head.

Victor hadn't been to the clinic in some time, and over the past two days had developed a small cough that was worriesome. Ursah hadn't really wanted to take Victor outside today, because the weather was quite cold and breezy, and she was still a relatively new mother, furiously overprotective of her child. But she had bundled her son up so well that he could hardly move either his legs or arms, in the hope that there was some magical medicine that could cure his affliction immediately.

She patted his back as she squinted through her glasses, half-fogged over from the shift from cold to warm. She spun a small circle and looked backward to see if Niku was following.

Lord Niku
Niku pushed open the door easily with one gloved hand, a fairly bulky diaper bag in the other. He smiled reassuringly at Ursah as the door closed and twitched his ears, trying to bring the warmth back to them.

"If you want to, go have a seat. I'll check us in," he offered with a vague gesture to some of the chairs. He tugged his gloves off and stuffed them into his pockets before heading toward the seated attendant.

Ursah Bunny
Ursah shuffled her way over to the seating area, sitting herself in a red vinyl chair with Victor in her lap. She carefully unwound the long yellow scarf from his face, until his chubby cheeks were exposed. She smiled into her sons face, and then touched his cheeks to see if they were warm.

Warm and moist. She hoped that was from his breath, and not because he was getting clammy. This was the first time that Victor had been sick, and she was worried to the bone.

Lord Niku
Niku spoke briefly with the man seated behind the counter and was handed a small clipboard and a pen. He carried his various burdens to the chair beside Ursah's and set the bag down at her feet before seating himself. He flung one of his feet up onto a knee and propped the clipboard on it, writing in small, hasty script.

"It's only been about two or three days, right?" he asked Ursah off-handedly, his eyes still mostly focused on the paper in front of him.

Ursah Bunny
Ursah leaned over, trying to get a better vantage of the clipboard while balancing Victor on her lap. "Hmm? Does it ask that there? Won't a doctor ask us that?"

She squinted her eyes. Her glasses were still foggy. "Two days and two nights. It started the night before last night."

Victor was squirming. Ursah bounced him distractedly on her knee, then stilled long enough to pull off the child's thick winter coat. She straightened his shirt down over his belly and then moved him to the other knee.

Lord Niku
Niku pointed to a line titled "7b" with the tip of the pen. "How long have the child's symptoms persisted," he read. "I don't know. Some places ask first to save time in the examination room." He finished the rest of the form somewhat quickly, placed it on the desk, and returned to his seat. He held out a finger and touched it to Victor's palm, the little fingers squeezing onto the still-chilly digit and motioned toward the secretary with his head. "He said the wait shouldn't be too long."

Ursah Bunny
Ursah nodded quietly, not overly interested in the contents of the clipboard, already bored with waiting. She was anxious to get Victor in to see someone, and had never been known for her patience. She bounced her knee more out of nervous habit than anything, and Victor issued a strange little broken coo as the bouncing jostled him. She smiled and lowered him half to the ground, holding onto his arms to help him stand. He was close to walking, she thought. She glanced over to Niku to see if he was observing.

Lord Niku
He, in fact, was.

With his elbows propped on his knees, he was leaned over, keeping a close eye on the infant. Occasionally he would shift his attention from Victor to the door, his own impatience showing a bit. He reached over to take Victor's hands from Ursah, slowly walking the boy in front of him.

Britain

After several minutes, the door to the inner workings of the clinic opened to reveal a medium-tallish-youngish woman in a white labcoat. Her hair was carrot-orange and long, worn in low twin ponytails that reached her waist; the most notable feature in her moderately attractive face was the slight frown she wore. Clipboard in hand, she glanced at the wording of the paperwork before scanning the room. "Victor's parents? Come with me, please."

Ursah Bunny
Ursah glanced upward the moment the door opened, and was mildly suprised to see such a young looking doctor step forward. She eyed the woman criticly, trying to deem whether she was capable of dealing with her beloved son.

Nevertheless she rose, straightening out her clothing as she stood. She hovered by the father with his son, ready to head forward as a group.

Lord Niku
Niku smiled up at the doctor. The receptionist hadn't been kidding. He rose, pulling Victor up by his arms and held him as he started through the door. The small boy started to fuss at not being on the ground and made a few angry sounding grunts, which were quickly quieted by a regimen of bounces. Niku smiled down at Victor, then to Ursah, and walked toward the door.

Britain

"We're a little short-staffed today since it's so close to the holidays, so bear with me a little please," the doctor told them over her shoulder, leading them into the back area. One of the little exam rooms was open, and she ushered them inside.

"I'm Dr. London. Paperwork says he has a cough? Any other symptoms?" She asked, turning back to them and gesturing for Ursah to place her baby on the counter scale.

Ursah Bunny
Ursah took the baby from Niku's arms, carrying him over to the silvery scale. Squirming, Victor didn't seem to want to be on his back and protested with a few whining udulations as Ursah lay him down.

"A cough, and a small fever." Ursah replied, trying to soothe the squirming infant. "You might notice that he sounds a bit hoarse as well... not much, but a bit. He's been eating fine, though."

Lord Niku
"He got tired earlier last night, too, but just a little bit," Niku added. "Other than all that, he's pretty much been himself." He looked at the little boy squirming on the scale and held his hands behind his back. He turned to look at the doctor a bit expectantly.

Britain
"Eating fine, though," London murmured, eyes narrowed as she made the proper notes. Stepping forward, the young doctor tugged the stethescope from around her neck and set it to her ears, leaning over him to listen as he breathed. That done, she placed hands below his jaw on either side of his throat, feeling for swelling with cool hands.

"Have you brought anything new into your home in the last couple of days?" She asked, pulling out a thermometer and placing it securely under Victor's arm. "Changed his diet or bedding? This could be anything from a pet to a houseplant, really, so think hard."

Ursah Bunny
Ursah shifted a bit uncomfortably. "Well, we did buy him a new fish. He's absolutely crazy about them... you don't think that could have anything to do with it, do you? We can't take away his aquariums, he'd be devastated..."

Lord Niku
"I don't think that'd be a problem unless he ate the fish," Niku said. "Although he does put just about everything in his mouth." He stopped to think for a few seconds. "I honestly can't think he wouldn't have coughed it up by now."

Britain
"Sometimes babies swallow things and they get stuck in their lungs- until they cause pneumonia," was Londy's very matter-of-fact reply, as she wrote down his temperature. "I don't think that's it, considering his symptoms; he shouldn't have developed a fever this fast if that were the case."

Retrieving a tool from the wall and a tongue depresser, she gently coaxed the baby's mouth open and peeked at his throat. "Any redness of the skin or irritation, itchyness?"

Ursah Bunny
Urash's eyes widened at the mention of pnuemonia, the young mother not hearing the rest of the sentence. "Pneumonia?! How could he... I mean... we watch him!"

Her mind swam. She was a horrible mother, she had gotten her baby sick! She felt sick herself.

Lord Niku
Niku put a hand on Ursah's shoulder. "She said it probably isn't pneumonia. No need to get worked up over something it's not," he said with a smile before turning to address the doctor. "He's been a little red, actually. But not a whole lot. I noticed it a few days ago while changing him, but it hasn't gotten any worse, really."

Britain
There was impatience in the look she threw Ursah- just a little, and she locked it down quickly. Red-headed temper. "Well, from what I can see, you've got two potential issues here. Allergies don't usually produce a fever, though the possibility exists; based on what I can see of his cough and what you're telling me, I'm leaning towards an illness called croup. If I'm correct, his cough will get much worse, almost sounding like a bark. It'll be a terrible sound, but it's not as bad as you think. A few simple medications should clear it up."

Leaning back against the counter, the doctor crossed her arms over her chest, creasing lines into her perfectly starched labcoat. "If the symptoms persist, then I sugget keeping him away from the fishtanks for a bit to see if anything changes. In that case it could be an allergy to the fish food, or the chemicals- so make sure you're washing your hands after touching either."

Ursah Bunny
Barking? It would get worse? The doctor was looking cross. Ursah was uncomfortable. Niku seemed to be taking things in stride, so she looked to him. He seemed to be listening to the doctor rather intently.

Her eyes wandered toward Victor, and she moved a hand to stroke his hair back from his forehead. He was still squirming about discontently, but seemed to soothe some at the familiar gesture.

She hoped her son wasn't allergic to anything to do with his beloved fish. Taking them away could make him more miserable than the cough.

Lord Niku
"So we'll just have to wait and see?" Niku asked Dr. London. "We won't know until he starts...barking or unless he gets better?" He kept his hand on Ursah's shoulder for comfort as she looked forlornly at Victor. He looked pretty much himself, though. Niku would just have to hope for the best.
