No gift could make me so happy, as to see your smiling face as you trudge up the driveway, knapsack on your back, your suit rumpled, your GI boots with the laces loosely tied, your cap on a saluting angle; so matter of fact like always. No gift could make me so happy, as to see you with a long beard because you did not take time to shave, and you wanted to look as much like Santa as possible, for the children's sake. No gift could make me so happy, as to see you waving and shouting to me; "I'm home; I'm home! And it's just another tomorrow." "I see you! I see you!" You're smiling, just as we said, you would surely be home soon.

And you did come. The bugler played "Taps." They gave me my gift, "the flag" folded in a triangle. It's red, white, and blue, with stars and stripes. No Christmas wrapping, ribbon or bow. Ellusive dream state? For I still seem to see you, coming up the garden path, and you are bringing a Christmas tree. "Oh-h! It's the 'Tree of Life'." One branch is broken off, and there are no trimmings, only dewdrops, and one shining star on top. It is Christmas; the bells are ringing, carolers are singing, and I hear your voice in the echoes of my mind singing "Joy to the World," "Peace and Goodwill" to all mankind.
