Well... it does say in the ten commandments that you shouldn't take the lord's name in vain, like yelling "oh my G-d!" when you see something or get mad, but you probably already knew that. There are also many verses in the new testament letters telling Christians to keep their mouths pure, and not speak evil, so I'm sure that would apply. I will try to find the exact scripture reference for you.

Saying stuff like "oh my G-d" is still disrespectful. Our society does not really consider that cursing, but we kinda should. I'm not going to say I haven't done it, but I try not to, because I believe that the word "God" should only be uttered in the proper context, not as an expletive.

Here's the actual passage Exodus 20:7You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name.

I think that as a Christian, you shouldn't curse. I'm not saying that I haven't done it, but it allows you to be more focused on God in my opinion. It takes away the negativity that is associated with it.

The Bible never flat out says 'Do not cuss.' It DOES say, however, '. . .Whatever is pure, lovely, good. . ." etc. There's another forum topic on this.

Ephesians 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

Guardian - Angel Ephesians 4:29Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. But what is wholesome? That must be taken into account. Social constructs are created to determine what is "wholesome". Another question I must ask: it says "but only what is helfpul for building others up according to their needs"... according to their needs? So, does that mean, if I have a friend who needs to be yelled at, and cussed at to motivate them that it is okay to use profanity and yell at them because it "may benefit those [the friend] who listen."?

NewFoundLight a note about taking GOD's name in vain technically GOD's name is not GOD, so I don't believe that would apply, but then again thats just me. I've heard you say this time and again. If God is not his name, then what is? God, Lord, Jesus, those are all names that we call him. A name is whatever he is known by. Any time we say 'oh my l**d' or 'oh my g*d' we are misusing his name. Misusing as in not using it properly--using it to curse, not to speak to him. That's what my opinion is, at least.

When translated 'God' litterally means, 'I can't say' I've got to go with Light on this, simply because, it seems like a pet name: she's blonde = blondie; you can't say his name= I can't say it just seems that we as humans are too unworthy to even speak his name, and as cliche' as that is/sounds, that's my views.
And I havn't abandon my earlier serchings, I just have ALLOT of notes to look through, like seven or eight of the thick spiral notebooks, it wasn't where I thought it was so...I'm still looking.

Here's a scripture I pulled up... Matthew 5:22 NIV 22But I tell you that anyone who is angry* with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca*,' is answerable to the Sanhedrin*. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell. *some manuscripts insert "without cause" *Raca= Aramaic term for "airhead" *Sanhedrin= court of that time I hope it helps you make your decision. The only thing I don't get is how calling someone airhead is not a sin, but calling someone, "You fool!" is. They both seem like funny insults to me. Haha... airhead. xp
