A young cub slept peacefully upon a branch in the jungle, away from her brother and sister. Her mother was out somewhere as her children napped, and as was often the case, Kumbuko had a strange dream...
She was following a path in the jungle, not knowing where it led, but walking happily along it nonetheless. There was a strange creature at the end of it, not frightening, but not really friendly looking either. As Kumbu aproached... She awoke.
Blinking her stony eyes in an irritated fasion, Kumbu stood up and stretched. She leaped down from the tree gracefully and padded off towards the river to get something to eat. Her mother and siblings wouldn't mind, she always did this when she woke up early. As she got to the river, she spotted a fish, but it swam away as soon as she got near, downriver, towards a place she had never gone before. "Hey! Come back, little guy, I just wanna eat you is all!" She called after it, following it until it darted into a dark patch of water, all but dissapearing from her sight.
"Fine then..." She growled, looking around at her new surroundings. The trees were gone, ahead of her was a great savanah, hardly any trees as far as she could see... She spun around and saw the jungle right behind her. it was so strange how far her paws could take her in such a short time.
Deciding to make the best of the strange situation, Kumbu stared into the river once again, waiting for a fish to come by so she could snare it and eat it.

Under the surface of the water, Jaha was swimming up to a large trout. Then he saw a sightly smaller fish zoom past him in fear. This caused to big fish to swim away.
He respected his prey but he still would like a decent meal once in a while. Even a large trout would hardley count as a meal.
He was up this early was to beat the prides of lions to the fish. When they come, most of the fish are scared into the deeper parts of the river and the rest they catch.
He often lays on a large flat river rock as he eats his fish.
He surfaced from the dark area of water where he was sneaking up on the lage fish. As he broke the surface he saw a small cub that was unlike he had seen before.

Kumbu stared at the fish below the surface for a moment longer before she saw a burst of red emerge from the water. She jumped back in surprise and watched the lion with wide eyes. "What are you doing in the water, mister?" She asked curiously, staying a safe distance from the much larger male.
"What did you have to scare me for?" She asked angrily, pinning her ears back against her head. She hated being surprised by things like that, she wanted to be strong, and being scared was for the weak.
Kumbu shifted uneasily on her yellow tipped paws, ready to run and climb up the nearby trees if things turned bad.

"Swimming, and I didn't scare you, YOU scared you", he replied shortly but calmly as he snatched a large fish from the water and lied on his rock.
He shook his wet fur and began eating his large fish.
He wouldn't let this strange little cub get to him with petty insults. He just had to keep his cool.

Kumbu growled coldly at the lion, "I did not, you did!" She hissed. "Why would I scare myself? That's just dumb." She said, rolling her steely eyes.
Without another word to the red lion, Kumbu dove into the water and snatched an unsuspecting fish in her mouth before swimming back up. She pulled herself up on the bank and began eating, determinedly keeping her gaze from wandering too close to the lion.
'Dumb thing... Why would I scare myself? It's his fault for popping out of the water like that...' She thought seethingly to herself as she ate.

"I can't scare you I can't make you anything, only you can." He said softly as he tore off a chunk of fish.
He knew that eventually she would understand that nobody can make you do or feel anything. Even pain or fear, it's your own mind that makes you feel it not the thing that is to blame.
He sighed and continued eating his, knowing that he can't make her like him or even look at him.

No matter how much Kumbu wanted to ignore the lion, his wise words caught her attention. She flicked her ears upwards again and turned to face him, her small fish already stripped of all flesh, all that remained was a skelleton.
"Well, I CAN be kind of scary sometimes." Kumbu said with a smile, puffing out her tiny chest. "Say, what's your name, mister? I'm Kumbu." She said happily, all but forgetting what had happened before. She was fairly good at putting the past behind her, especially if she could make a new friend that way.

Jaha was glad that she didn't hold a grudge. He was somewhat content with Kumbu and decided that, she was young and still learning that confidance is good but arrogance was bad.
"My name is Jaha, nice to meet you Kumbu", he said with a slight smile on his face as he dangled his large red paw in the water.

Kumbu smiled and splashed the water with her yellow tipped paw, "I like your name, Jaha. So, are all lions as big as you are?" She asked admiring his size from afar. Even her father wasn't as big as him last time she saw him.
Kumbuko stared at the water once again, her grey eyes unblinking and her tail swishing behind her. She wondered to herself if she should jump in and go for a swim, she wasn't so great at swimming, but if Jaha was around he could save her if she needed help.

"Thanks... Some lions are as big as me..." Jaha said quietly with a small smile.
He wasn't quite sure why, but he had a soft spot for cubs. He chuckled softly as he watched Kumbu bat the water with her tail flicking. He thought cubs did cute things without even realizing.
He softly sighed as he watched a fish with his ears pinned and his large tail swishing like a whip.

Indeed, Kumbu was unaware of how 'cute' her actions were, but she didn't care. Even if she knew, she wouldn't change, she did what she did mostly out of habit and instinct, no amount of self-conciousness could change that.
"You're welcome." She said brightly, still not taking her eyes off the water.
Without another word Kumbu shook her tail end slightly and leaped into the water with a huge splash, sending water flying in all directions.

"Hey!", he said with a slight chuckle in his voice as he was splashed by a few drops of water. Although he hunted in the water and enjoyed it as a pass-time, his cat-like instincts sit gave him a strong dislike for unexpected showers of cold water.
"If it's a splash fight you want, it's a splash fight you'll get!"
He leaped from his rock and created an immense tower of water that became a ripple at the edge of the river. He knew for sure that this would soak her. He felt like he was a father playing with his daughter. He remembered the last time he played like this was with Amai. He was beginning to miss her dearly. How long would it be until he saw her again? He sighed deeply but perked up immediately as he remembered he was in the presence of a cub.

Kumbu hissed indignantly at the sudden water-attack she had just endured, swimming to the edge of the water and climbing out, soaking wet. "What was that for?!" She spat, suddenly turning cold and irritable. She hated being splashed.
"Did I SAY I wanted a splash fight? No, I didn't." She growled, shaking the water off of her fur, some of it standing up at odd angles. Of course, Ku was just being a sore loser, and generally did not like going in the water. In fact, the moment she entered the water she wished that she hadn't not used to the unfamiliar sensation.
"I'm going home to dry off." She said irritably, "See you later, Jaha." She scowled, scampering off toward the jungle once again. Normally, she was not one to leave so suddenly, but in this case, she just wanted to go home and dry off. Without another word, she scaled a tree in one quick motion and was off, leaping from branch to branch until she was well out of sight.
